1 Claim.
This invention relates to window blinds.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a window blind which can be located within the window frame and in between the screen and the window, and an arrangement such that the blinds can be adjusted from within the house by simply raising the lower window frame a small amount for access to the adjusting nut, and without the removal of the exterior screens.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a blind for a window opening which can be adiusted as a Venetian blind is adjusted to alter the amount of light entering the interior of the house, and which can be adjusted between horizontal position allowing for the passage of air and light therethrough, and a vertical position to prevent the passage of air and light therethrough.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a Venetian blind arrangement which can be attached as a unit to the window opening and which will be on the exterior of the window so that it will not have to be periodically changed as are Venetian blinds which are used on the interior of the house.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front plan view of a window opening and looking upon a screen located in front of the adjustable blinds, but with a portion of the screen broken away to show certain parts of the blind.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the adjustable blind unit and showing the parts adapted to be operated to effect the adjustment of the blind elements.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view looking upon the rear of the adjustable blind units, and particularly upon the adjusting parts therefor.
Referring now to the figures, I represents the frame of a window opening and I I represents the sill thereof. On the exterior of the window opening there is located a screen l2 and within the window opening are upper and lower window sashes l3 and I4. Both of these window sashes can be adjusted to permit the passage of air through the window opening. Between the screen I2 and the window sashes and within the window opening there is located an adjustable slide unit 15 embodying the features of the present invention.
Referring now particularly to Figures 3 and 4, this unit I5 is shown to comprise a frame l6 of much the same dimensions as the frame of the screen containing a plurality of horizontal spaced rods f8 respectively bearing blinds I9. These blinds [9 have inclined portions 20 with bent-in edges 2| and 22. These blinds are welded to the exterior of the rods 3. On the bent-in. portion 22 there is mounted a hinge plate 23 and a hinge plate 24, both being adapted to receive the lateral proections '25 of a U-shaped member 26. The U-shaped member extends inwardly and its transverse portion is pivotally connected in a vertically extending adjusting rod 21 in the manner indicated at 28. This adjusting rod is extended at its upper end to a bracket 29, and at its lower end through vertically spaced brackets 3| and 32. The lower end of the adjusting rod 2! is threaded, as indicated at 33, and has thereon an adjusting nut 34 disposed between the vertically spaced brackets 3| and 32.
When the rod is adjusted upwardly, the U- shaped members 26 likewise will be adjusted upwardly and the blinds l9 will be caused to have their lower edges rotated inwardly, whereby to shut off the flow of light and air through the blinds. This upward movement of the rod 21 can continue until a shoulder 35 on the :rod engages with the bracket 29. If the rod 21 is allowed to return downwardly, the blinds will be pivoted on the rods la in a clockwise direction so that the forward edges of the blinds will be raised upwardly to the position shown in the figures or to positions higher.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
In a window blind, a frame, a plurality of horizontally disposed rods arranged at spaced intervals along said frame and rotatably supported thereon, a blind extending longitudinally of each of said rods and secured thereto for movement to an upstanding position in response to the rotary movement of said rods, each of said blinds including an intermediate portion arranged at an angle with respect to its edges, and edge adjacent portions projecting in opposite directions from said intermediate portion and arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other, and means operatively connected to said blinds for rotating the latter about said rods to said upstanding position wherein the edge adjacent portions of adjacent blinds interfit to shut off the flow of air and light through said blinds, said means comprising brackets projecting from said frame and secured thereto, a vertically disposed adjusting rod arranged in superposed spaced relation with respect to said frame and mounted in said brackets for vertical movement relative to said frame, a plurality of U-shaped members having their bights pivotally carried by said adjusting rod and having their legs operatively connected to the adjacent one of said blinds for rotating the latter in response to the vertical movement of said adjusting rod, hand actuated means on said adjusting rod adjacent the lowermost of said brackets for causingvertical movement of said adjusting rod, and means on said adjusting rod for contacting the uppermost of said brackets for limiting upward vertical movement of said adjusting rod. 7
