(01. 229-9) The invention relates to packages such as boxes and the like, where a tray-like member is adapted to be drawn and pushed within an outer enclosure.
An object of the invention is to provide the tray member with a flap which is integral w1th the end material of said tray member without any hole being formed in said end material due to the formation of the flap.
Another object is to provide a flap which may be formed by the same operation by which the tray member proper is formed.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a flap arrangement that will facilitate the closing of a box provided therewith, the flap being guided during the closing operation.
The drawing illustrates, by way of example, an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 shows a flattened-out inner tray member of a cigarette package of the box type or of a similar box, according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of said tray member in partly folded-in condition; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the closed cigarette package, the tray member being inserted in position into the external package or shell member, with the operative flap extending therefrom.
At each end thereof the tray member I is provided with a tuck flap 2 and 2 respectively. As shown the tuck flap 2 is provided with a cut 3 extending parallel to the front edge of the tuck flap 2 for some distance of the width thereof, preferably to about the mean width of the same. Thus a flap 4 is formed. Preferably said out is given such a curved direction near the edge of the tuck flap 2, as shown at 5, that flap 2 will get a rounded corner portion that facilitates tucking-in the flap 2.
In shaping the tray member of the package the flap 4 is folded along a line 6 that is situated at an angle of about 135 to the cut 3, so that the flap 4 will rest upon the tuck flap 2 as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 3 shows the folded tray member inserted into an outer shell I. the flap 4 extending outwards from the package.
Said flap 4 forms an operative tongue by means of which the tray may be easily withdrawn from or pushed into the outer shell I.
As will be conceived the operative flap 4 may be situated more or less near a longitudinal edge of the tray member, and such a flap may be provided, if desired, at each of the tuck flaps 2 and 2 respectively, which needs no illustration to be understood.
Preferably the flap 4 is provided with a folding line 8, as shown in Figure 1, so placed that when the tray member is entirely inserted into the outer shell 7, said folding line 8 will be flush with the front edge of the shell of the package. Thus the bundling of packages to form larger units is simplified, since the flap 4 will adapt itself to the front surface of the package. Sealing of the package may be easily effected by applying some glue to that part of the flap 4 which will be nested between the tuck flap and the shell in closed condition of the package.
An operative flap as described may be used in connection with packages, boxes and the like of any construction where such package box or the like is adapted to be closed by means of a tuck iiap and the joint between the inner tray and the outer shell will in closed condition thereof be as tight as in the case of boxes and the like which have no such operative flap or tongue.
An operative flap according to the invention does not only constitute an easy means for a user of the box or package in question, but it also makes it more easy for the maker of such box or package to close and, eventually, seal the same I claim.
1. A package comprising body means, a tuck flap at one end of said means having a slot extending transversely to the tucking-in direction of said tuck flap from one side edge for a certain distance of the width thereof so as to form a secondary flap thereon, said secondary flap being folded over diagonally and rearwardly so as to project substantially longitudinally of and beyond the tuck flap and the body means when the tuck flap is in folded in condition and thereby form an operative flap for withdrawal or pushing-in of the tuck flap relatively to said body means.
2. A package as claimed in claim 1, in which said slot extends for about half the width of said tuck flap.
3. A package as claimed in claim 1 in which said flap is provided, intermediate its ends, with a weakened folding line.
4. A package as claimed in claim 1 in which said slot is curved near the side edge of the tuck flap.
