This invention relates to sugar shakers or dispensers.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a sugar dispenser whereby a measured quantity of sugar can be dispensed each time and wherein after the dispensing operation, the openings in the neck of the cover are automatically closed to prevent the inflow of dirt or insects.
It is another object of the present invention to provide in a sugar dispenser a closure device which is automatic in its operation once it has been moved in one direction by hand, which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
According to the invention, there has been provided a cover with a neck portion into which sugar can be dropped for being dispensed through openings at the end of the neck portion. Workable through the neck portion is a plunger adapted to engage with the sugar entering the neck portion to cause the same to be forced through the openings in the bottom of the neck portion as the sugar dispenser is inverted. Through the neck portion, there extends a rodlike member which is attachedto the plunger entering the neck portion and which has externally of the cover, a handle portion by which the parts are pulled through the cover either according to one form of the invention against the action of the spring where the spring is located internally of the neck portion, or due to spring action where the spring is located externally of the neck portion. An external-cover is provided on the rod in the one form of the invention to close the openings at the end of the neck when the internal member is held upwardly by the spring and in the other form of the invention, when the cover is the internal member. A flange, however, is provided in the other form on the rod externally thereof to provide means against which the spring can react and at the same time, to serve as a cover while the .rod is temporarily held in a pushed-in position within the cover.
In a modified form of theinvention, there are provided piston operated devices for eifecting the actuation of the plunger and slide whereby the sugar will not be distributed onto the fingers while trying to dispense the same from the .inverted sugar container. .The piston operated devices are operated by plungers or slides above the opening of the neck portion and are brought together by pinching the same with the thumb and finger. The hand, operating the slide will not need to be disposed beneath the sugar opening.

and .of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring now to the figures, It represents a vcontainer which may be of .glass or plastic on which there is a threaded portion i2 to which a screw cover i3 can be connected so as to close the open end of the container Ill. The cover 13 is removable so that the container 10 can be filled with sugar. Thereafter, the cover is screwed on tightly and the sugar is dispensed through a neck portion l4 thereof closed at the top by a portion with holes 15 therein through which a rod 16 is slid.

I To use the dispenser, the user inverts the same and pulls downwardly on the rod 16 by the use of the handle l9 so as to pull with it sugar which may have collected within the neck portion [4 when the dispenser was first inverted. If the rod I6 is pulled only a little way a continual flow of sugar may occur. Since the plunger l8 will not be at that time within the neck portion I4, the cover 2| will be pulled slightly from the opening l5.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 5 and 6, there is shown a modified form of the invention in which the operation is slightly different. The
spring 22 is located externally of the cover l3 so as to normally maintain the plunger IS in an extended position in the neck portion [4 and so that it serves normally as a cover over the opening l5. When sugar is to be dispensed, a rod 24 which is of less length than the rod I6 is depressed against the action of the spring 22 and then released and sugar will be forced out of the opening l5 by the plunger it! automatically. The rod 24 is of less length than the rod is so that it does not protrude above the neck portion to any greater distance than the rod it. The flange 2| thereon serves mainly as an abutment against which the spring will react and only temporarily as a cover when the rod 24 is pressed inwardly. It will not be a full cover as the spring 22 upon being compressed will consume space upon the rod. However, with the provision of a recess 25 in the cover 2|, it can be brought into close engagement with the top of the neck.

There are two of these plunger operated devices on the cover and the operating plungers 39 can be grasped by the thumb and finger of a hand and a squeezing action is eifected upon them to cause the movement downwardly of the cover flange 34 whereby sugar will be dispensed from the openings 33.
While I have illustrated and described the preierred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as deflned in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A sugar dispenser comprising a main 99.
tainer, a cover for the main container having a neck portion therein with a top thereover, said top having openings through which sugar may be dispensed and a central opening, a rod extending through the central opening in the top of the neck portion, a plunger on the inner end of the rod, said plunger adapted to be worked in the neck portion to force sugar out of the opening in the top part of the neck portion, a cover flange carried by the rod and adapted to close the openings in the top of the neck portion, spaced cylinders mounted on the sides 0! the neck portion, pistons slidably positioned within said cylinders, piston rods carried by said pistons and projected from said cylinders and connected with said cover flange, and manually operable means on said cover for moving said pistons within said cylinders in a direction to unseat said cover flange and permit the sugar to flow through said openings.
2. A sugar dispenser comprising a main container, a cover for the main .containerdiaving a neck portion therein with a top thereover, said top having openings through which sugar may be dispensed and a central opening, a rod extending through the central opening in the top of the neck portion, a plunger on the inner end of the rod, said plunger adapted to be worked in the neck portion, a cover flange carried by the rod and adapted to close the openings in the top of the neck portion, spaced cylinders mounted on the sides of the neck portion, pistons slidably positioned within said cylinders, piston rods carried by said pistons and projected from said cylinders and connected with said cover flange, and manually operable means on said cover for moving said pistons within said cylinders in a direction to unseat said cover flange and permit the sugar to flow through said openings, and spaced ear projections formed on said cover flange and to which the projected ends of said piston 'rods are connected.
3. A sugar dispenser comprising a main container, a cover for the main container having neck portion therein with a top thereover, said top having openings through which sugar may be dispensed and a central opening, a rod extendin through the central opening in the top of the neck portion, a plunger on the inner end of the rod, said plunger adapted to be worked in the neck portion, a cover flange carried by the rod and adapted to close the openings in the top of the neck portion, spaced cylinders mounted on the sides of the neck portion, pistons slidably positioned within said cylinders, piston rods car ried by said pistons and projected from said cylinders and connected with said cover flange, and manually operable means on said cover for moving said pistons within said cylinders in a direction to unseat said cover flange and permit the sugar to flow through said openings, said piston moving means comprising air chambers found on said cover one for each of said cylinders, passageways connecting each of said air chambers with its respective cylinder, and plungers slidable within said air chambers and havin ends projecting therefrom to be manually pressed inward to force air from said chambers through said passageways into said cylinders to move said pistons in a direction to unseat said cover flange.

A sugar dispenser comprising a main container, a cover for the main container having a neck portion therein with a top thereover, said top having openings through which sugar may be dispensed and a central opening. a rod ex- 5 tending through the central opening in the top 01' the neck portion, a plunger on the inner end of the rod, said plunger adapted to be worked in the neck portion, a cover flange carried by the rod and adapted to close the openings in the top of the neck portion, spaced cylinders mounted on the sides of the neck portion, pistons slidably positioned within said cylinders, piston rods carried by said pistons and projected from said cylinders and connected with said cover flange, lo
and manually operable means on said cover for moving said pistons within said cylinders in a direction to unseat said cover flange and permit the sugar to flow through said openings, said piston moving means comprising air chambers found on said cover one for each of said cylinders, passageways connecting each of said air chambers with its respective cylinder, and plungers slidable within said air chambers and having ends projecting therefrom to be manually pressed 2 6 and springs within said chambers and bearing against the inner ends of said plungers retaining them in an operative extended position.
