This invention relates to a pump combination especially adapted for use with a fuel can.
Many accidents have occurred in the transfer of gasoline or other fuel from storage cans to motors, stoves and heaters. Such transfer is particularly hazardous in the case of a motor boat where the gasoline has to be poured from a can into the motor while standing in the boat. Not only is there danger of capsizing the boatduring the pouring operation, but the inevitable spilling of the gasoline while it is being poured, results in highly inflammable fumes which are readily ignited and result in many fires. A like fire hazard is present whenever fuel is poured from a container into a stove or heater.
The present invention has for its purpose the provision of a pump combination which is adapted for a wide variety of uses but especially for use with a standard fuel container, to avoid the mentioned hazards.
The various features and advantages will be understood from the detailed description and claim when taken with the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a fuel container, having the pump combination of the present invention incorporated therein, a portion of the side wall of the container being broken away for clearness in disclosure; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the present pump combination with a fragment of the container indicated in dotted lines.
In the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a standard fuel container or can having a filling opening at its top bordered by an upstanding threaded nipple 6 of a standard diameter. The container may also be provided near one margin of its top, with an inclined spout I. The free end of the spout is threaded so that it can be sealed by a threaded closure 8 screwed thereon.
The combination of the present invention comprises a lift or other type pump generally designated P and a closure or screw-thread can cap 9 in which the pump is mounted in sealed relation. The cover 9, when it has the pump mounted therein, serves to seal the top opening in the can or container when the cap is screwed on the nipple 6 thereof.
The pump comprises a pump cylinder l0 which is internally threaded at its lower end and which is externally threaded at H on its upper end. The lower end of the cylinder is closed by an apertured plug [2 screwed therein. The aperture in the plug communicates with an external nipple l3 on the plug on which nipple a piece of rubber hose M can be connected.

The ball has restricted movement in a cup [8 surrounding the valve seat, the ball being retained in the cup by a cotter pin l9 anchored in openings in the rim of the cup.
The upper end of the pump cylinder is closed by a pump head 20 in the form of an inverted cup which is internally threaded to be screwed on the threads ll of the cylinder. The head is provided with a lateral outlet nipple 22 to which a discharge rubber hose 23 can be connected. The head has mounted therein a pump rod holder 24 through which the pump rod 25 can be reciprocated. The holder contains pump packing 26 surrounding the pump rod, the packing being compressed by a packing adjusting nut 21 encircling the pump rod and screwed into the lower end of the holder. The upper end of the pump rod has secured thereto a handle in the form of a disc 29 that is easily grasped while the lower end of the pump rod carries a piston. This piston comprises a pump cup 30 of leather or the like, reinforced by a cup washer 3|, the cup and the washer being locked in position between the nuts 32 which are screwed on the threaded lower end of the pump rod 25.
The pump, in the assembled combination, extends through the opening in the threaded can cap 9 and is anchored in sealed relation to the closure. The specific construction for effecting this anchorage comprises the gaskets 33 to engage the respective surfaces of the margin of the can cap at the opening therein, together with the threaded adjusting collar 34. This collar when screwed tightly on the threads II or otherwise firmly secured at the upper end of the pump cylinder forces the gaskets with the margin of the cap therebetween into sealed relation with the edge of the head 20.
It will be understood that the pump can be used with a can cap 9 of any diameter in which there may be cut an opening of a size just sufficient to receive the pump cylinder I0. The cap may then be assembled on the pump as described above.

What I claim is:
In combination, a unitary cap having a flat upper surface portion and a skirt portion de pending from the periphery thereof, said upper portion having a Single aperture therethrough of a given size smaller than said surface portion so as to leave a flat marginal area around said aperture, said eap-thaving an enlarged portion extending outwardly and downwardly from" said depending portion, said enlarged portion having screw threads to fit the threaded nipple of *"a standard fuel container, a pump extending through said aperture, said pumpcomprising a cylinder of uniform outer diameter substantially equal to said given size, said-rgcylindertbeing externally threaded at its upper end porti0n;
a head in the form of a cup internallythreaded adjacent its rim and screwed on said end portion; an outlet nipple on said head externally or 4 said cap and communicating with the interior of said pump, and means including an internally threaded collar screwed on said end portion, below said cup and said marginal area for clamping said marginal area between said collar and the edge of the rim of said cup.
