BRUSH AND SCRAPER UNIT Filed Aug. 6, 1948 INVENTOR. VEQA/O/V 0 W000 Patented Nov. 27, 1951 UNITED S TATE S PAT ENT OFFICE 2,576,325 pause scRAPEa UNIT Vernon D. Wood, LosAngeles, Calif. Animate-August 6, 1948, serial M12975 scams. "1
This invention relatesfin" general, to household scouring brushes, but more particularly'to and has for an object the provision ofa :combi'ned brush and scraper specially adaptedfor cleaning pots pans, and other utensils as well as surfacesin or abouta kitchen sink, wash basin, or otherwise. i
To 'such'end it is an object to employ a small of light weight which is usually formed with the bristles held on atwis'ted wire frame bent into a loop with the ends attachable to a suitable handle, and a scraper'attachedtothe device in a; position between the bristles and the handle and either permanently or detachably held for -use on'the brush frame.
'Another object to" preferably but not necessarilyform the scraper of a single piece of sheet metal havin an attaching "portion conforming in contour andaffixed to the brush frame and a forwardly extended scraper -'blade disposed in' an inclined blade so as-to overlie but besu'itably spaced from the brush body that it may be conveniently used when t'he' brush held 'fiatwise and thrust forwardly for scraping surfaces free of clinging matter, the reversal of the brush so that the scraper will be uppermost, then permitting the use ofthe'opposite side of the brushfrom the scraper for scouring and cleaning the scraped surface by saponification or through the use of any desired detergent. r
The form and character of the particular type of brush and scraper hereinafter shown and described readily-lend themselves to the combination in a single unit for the dual results mentioned but theinventionis-not necessarily limited to any particular type of brush and scraper,
The accompanyingdrawing shows a preferred embodimentof "the invention; subject to modification, within the scopeof-theappended claims, without departing from the spirit thereof. In
' the drawing:
Fig. 1' is a perspective vie of the'pr eferred 'form of brush 'embodyingmy invention;
"and economical'more or less conventional brush Fig. is a'fragme'ntarm'bottom plan view of the "brush showing a slightly modified means 'for twisted wire frame F with'a central loop I and "in Fig. 7*is"siini1ar to that of Figsi l-,=2"ai-id3"except that instead of 'providing-continuous mar- *g'inal flanges-5 at the sides of the 'scraperbody a pair of ears 5', 5' areprovided" at points near theffront-and rear extremities on each side'of the body and are adaptedto be crim'ped around the portions 3, 3- of ir'ameF.
terminal portions twisted together to form a receivingstem 2 for'an applied handle H, intermediate sections 3, "3, leading from opposite points onloop I-to 'Stem 2 and being disposed mediate section of'the frame. To suchend said scraper has a'bocly plate ll with marginal portions 5; 5; bent around andclinched on the inter- -' mediate sections 3,3 of the frame, and an elongated forwardly inclined-blade 6 extended over aside ofthe brushB. Thus, one side'of-thedevice may be'us'ed for scraping surfaces while the other side may housed for scouring when the device is=reversed in the hand 'of the user.
The form' of brush described and best shown in" Figs. 1, 2,;and 3 is subject to modification in 'minor respects; one modified form beingillustrated in Figs.' 5"'and 6,-another in Fig."4,*and still another in Fig. '7. The form'of brush shown The'type of device shown in Figs. 5 and 6*diff'ers from that of Fig. 1, only in respect to the form and manner of attaching the scraper to the frame F. In this form the scraper S comprises two companion members constituting a body 4' with a scraper blade 6' integral therewith and an attachable base 1 secured to the body as by means of a stud 8 fixed to and depending from body 4 and passing through base i and a nut 9 threaded onto said stud for detachably holding the scraper S on the brush frame F.
3 which frictionally fit the inner surfaces of similar flanges II, II formed on body 4', so that when secured together by nut 9 and stud 8 the intermediate portions 3, 3 of brush frame F will be enclosed therein between the brush B and handle H.
As shown in Fig. 8, the two members of the scraper body shown in Fig. '7 may be frictionally held together by so forming the flanges of the body members that they will snap into attached position, one upon the other, by reason of a tension of the flanges, and may be separated by the employment of a suitable tool. In this instance, the stud 8 and nut 9 would, of course,be omitted, thereby simplifying the structure.
Fig. 4 illustrates a type of scraperlbody different from those of Figs. 2 and 6 which, as in Fig. 2, requires only a single integral scraper part and has long lateral flanges a, 5a overlying the sections 3, 3 of the frame F while the body 4a is spot welded at points 12, I2 to frame sections 3, 3 for permanently securing the scraper attachment to the brush.
In Fig. 7, the ears 5, 5 are substituted for the long marginal portions 5 of the scraper body and may be bent and crimped over the frame sections 3, 3 in a manner similar to the formation of the portions 5 of Figs. 1 and 2.
It is important that scraper blade 6 be disposed in an inclined plane forwardly of handle H and the scraper body so that when the brush is held by a user with the scraper downmost it is effective for removing attached accumulations of matter from the bottoms of pots, pans, and other utensils when the unit is urged forwardly with the leading edge of the scraper in contact with the surface to be cleaned.
Following completion of a scraping operation the device is turned so that the brush is downmost and becomes effective through the use of a suitable detergent for thoroughly scouring and cleaning the surface.
It is of course desirable in the production of a I device of. the character herein described to provide a structure which is of minimum cost to to the user, maximum durability and efficiency,
nate all possibility of unsanitary conditions by,
the absence of pockets or traps which would re-' tain particles of decaying matter and thereby occasion undesirability while in or out of use.
In all forms of the unit herein shown and described the body of the scraper attachment encloses the intermediate sections 3, 3 and lends attractiveness as well as added utility and extraordinary sanitary features to the implement.
It Will be understood that while the disclosed scraper attachment is particularly designed for, use on one form of brush now in general use, it is apparent that the invention may be likewise applied to brushesof other forms with but slight modification of minor details and with no radical departures from the preferred structure herein shown.
I claim":
1. In combination, a brush having a, twisted wire frame formed with a forward loop portion, relatively inclined and converging intermediate portions and substantially straight and contiguous rear portions, a handle on said straight portions, tufted bristles held on said loop; and a scraper having a body secured to the-intermediate portions of the frame, and a-blade extended forwardly over the bristles and disposed in a plane inclined relative to the plane of the loop for selective use when the device is disposed for engaging said blade with a surface to be cleaned.
2. In combination, a brush having a twisted wire frame formed with a forward loop portion, relatively inclined and converging intermediate portions and substantially straight and contiguous rear portions, a handle on said straight portions, tufted bristles held on said loop; and a scraper havinga body secured tothe intermediate portions of the frame, and a blade extended forwardly over the bristles and disposed in a plane inclined relative to the plane of the loop for selective use when the device is disposed for engaging said blade with a surface to be cleaned, said scraper body having marginal portions bent over the intermediate frame portions for securing the scraper to the frame. v
' 3. In combination, a brush having a twisted wire frame formed with a forward loop portion, relatively inclined and converging intermediate portions and substantially straight and contiguous rear portions, a handle on said straight portions, tufted bristles held on said loop; and a scraper having a body secured to the intermediate portions of the frame, and a blade extended forwardly over the bristles and disposed in a plane inclined relative to the plane of the loop for selective use when the device is disposed for engaging said blade with a surface to be cleaned, said scraper body including marginal portions formed to embrace the intermediate portions of the frame.
