Thisinvention relates Ito iextensibleasidelsup- "portsforslidingdrawers; shutters, doors'aiid' the like, in cases whereiiit iside'si'rible to obtain a horizontal movement of -ne,part relatively to another part.
The invention will be described with particular reference to a sliding drawer, which term is designed to include sliding trays and shelves, hereinafter generically referred to as drawers, where the weight of the drawer and its contents is sustained in a horizontal position when the drawer is pulled out of the cabinet or like part, and it has for its object to simplify the operative parts and to reduce the depth of the cabinet without reducing the depth of the drawer, and to this end according to this invention the supporting means comprises a pair of runners or channels the back ends of which are bent upwardly at right angles to the main part thereof, a pair of arms pivoted to the sides of the drawer, rollers on the free ends of said arms slidably arranged in or on. such runners or channels, and means fixed adjacent the back end of the drawer with which said arms make contact when said drawer approaches its mid-outward position and by means of which the drawer is sustained in a horizontal position.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate this invention:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation, partly in section, on line II-II of Figure 1.
The supporting means for the drawer I comprises a pair of runners or channels 2 the back ends of which are bent upwardly at right angles to the main part thereof. The runners or channels 2 are of shallow U-shape form in cross-section and are secured to the inner walls 3 of the cabinet with the channels facing towards each other. The drawer I is supported at; its forward end on a pair of rollers I mounted on pins 5 secured to the walls 3 of the cabinet while the rear end is supported by a pair of rollers 6 rotatably mounted on the drawer I in such a position that the rollers run in the respective channels 2 except when the drawer I is pulled out to its fullest extent. Each of the pins 1 carrying therollers 6 is arranged to support one end of an arm 8 furnished at its free end with a further roller 9 arranged to run in the adjacent channels. The rear end of the drawer I is provided on each side with a fixed stop I0. Extensions I4 on the free ends of arms 8 serve to mount rollers I3.
The arrangement of the device is such that when the drawer I is in its closed or inward posi- "tionjsaid draweris supported in a horizontal -pos'ition,at*the front by'the two'rollers 4'located atthe-front'ofthe cabinet and bythe rollers 6 running" in the channels 2 as shown by broken linesin Figure 1. The rollers 9 on thefre e ends of-the'arms 8 are located adj acent the upper ends "of the upwardly extending ends of "the channels 2. the drawer I is "drawn outwardly the rollers 9 run down the upwardly extending channels 2 until they enter the horizontal portion thereof and simultaneously the upper edges of the arms 8 come into contact with the under surface of the stops Ill on the drawer and any tilting of the drawer is prevented. The rollers I3 serve to guide the rollers 9 from the vertical to the horizontal portions of the channels 2 and vice versa.
What I claim is:
1. In a cabinet having opposite side walls and a drawer opening leading from the front rearwardly into the cabinet between the side walls, the combination, with a drawer adapted to extend slidably through said drawer opening into the cabinet, of means for supporting the drawer, including a pair of rollers mounted within the cabinet upon the interior of the side walls at the front end of the drawer opening therein for supporting the drawer from beneath; a pair of opposite channel-shaped supporting runners secured to the interior of said side walls within said cabinet with the open sides of the channelshaped runners opening inwardly and mutually facing each other, each runner comprising a horizontal portion extending lengthwise of said drawer and a vertical portion extending rigidly upward from the rear end of said horizontal portion with a curved portion disposed between and integrally interconnecting the horizontal and vertical portions; a pair of pins mounted on the opposite sides of said drawer adjacent to the rear end thereof; a pair of rollers rotatably mounted on said pins for engagement in the horizontal portions of said runners; a pair of arms pivotally mounted intermediate the ends thereof on the pins; a second pair of rollers mounted on the rear ends of the arms in effective positions to ride exteriorly upon the runners for guiding the first pair of rollers from within the horizontal portion of said runners toward the vertical portion thereof; a third pair of rollers also mounted on the rear ends of said arms to ride within said portions of said runners and retain the second pair of rollers in operative rolling contact with the exterior of said portions of said runners; a pair of stop elements disposed on opposite sides of said drawer adjacent to the rear ends thereof, the front ends of said arms engaging beneath said stop elements to support said drawer when the latter is pulled out so as to extend outwardly from said cabinet.
2. In a cabinet having opposite side walls and a drawer opening leading from the front'rearwardly into the cabinet between the side walls,
the combination, with a drawer adapted to ex- M tend slidably through said drawer opening into the cabinet, of means for supporting the drawer,
including a pair of rollers mounted within the cabinet upon the interior of the side walls at the front end of the drawer opening therein for supporting the drawer from beneath; a pair ofopposite channel-shaped supporting runners secured to the interior of said side walls within said cabinet with the open sides of the channelshaped runners opening inwardly andmutually from said cabinet.
tions of said runners; a pair of arms pivotally mounted intermediate the ends thereof on the pins; a second pair of rollers mounted on the rear ends of the arms in effective positions to ride exteriorly upon the runners for guiding the jfiijst paiisgo'f rollers fro'infwithih one portion of said runners toward another portion; and a pair of stop elements disposed on opposite sides of said drawer adjacent tothe rear ends thereof. the front ends of said arms engaging beneath said stopfelements to support said drawer when the latter is pulled out so as to extend outwardly I HAROLD SHAND. i REFERENCES CITED i'ilheflfollowing references are of record in the facing each other, each runner comprising a horizontal portion extending lengthwise of said file of this patent:
