UNITED STATns ATENT rricn.,
BUFUS POPE, OF NOBESVILLE, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T() W. H. B. STOUT, OF SAME PLAGE.
CARPENTERS SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,515, dated May V9, 1.882. Application filed January 17, 1892. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ltUFUs POPE, a citizen of the United States ot` America, residing at Nobesville, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters7 Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXaot description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in carpenters squares, hereinafter described, and specifically set forthin the claims.
Figure l represents the face side of a square embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, the reverse side thereof, and Fig. 3 a detail illustration of one manner of using the square.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
A represents the usual measure, divided into inches and subdivisions thereof 5 B, a boardineasure table of usual characteristics.
Gis a protractor, of usual arrangement in itself; but in this instance it is located with its center on the twelve-inch mark, and continued or coincidently slanted lines D are formed upon the face of the tongue portion of the square, each of said lines being marked with the name indicating the particular geometrical figure of which it constitutes a side when used in the manner hereinafter described.
At the end of the main or principal portion of the square, and upon its face, is marked, stamped, or formed a table of geometrical figures, and the angles of the inclination of their sides, internal and external. On the reverse side of the tongue are formed, marked, or stamped slanting lines E, having indicating` marks showing t-he relative slant of each line from a base-line, and` expressed in inches to foot, as clearly shown, and also in degrees. These lines arefor use in cutting orlaying out the bevels of braces, batter-posts, rafters, Sie., whereby these may readily and without tedious computation be produced in what is known as one-halfpitch,77 or any other relative bevel to one-sixth pitch, Src.
By the use of the lines D any geometrical figure up to one having twelve sides may with equal readiness be produced or laid out.
It is evident that the occasions for the use of the improvements above described are numerous in drafting, layingoutframe-work,and in constructing regular and irregular cabinet and other work, and the saving of time connected with their use isv one of the principal benefits arising therefrom.
I am aware that protraetors are notnew, nor the specific manner of using them herein set forth, and I do not claim such as of my invention; but the manner of adapting the common steel square by the particular arrangement herein shown I believe to be novel and useful.
Themanner of usingmysquare is asfollows: To lay ou t any geometrical ii gure-for instance, an Octagon-draw the base-line c f place the square No. l on the line, as shown, andl draw the line g c. By consulting the lines D D it will be seen that the Octagon-line terminates at 5". Therefore place the square No. 3 at five inches from the base-line on the line g o and at `l2" on the line ef, and draw thc line ci b, which is one of the sides of the Octagon. Now reverse the square to the position occupied by square No. 2, mark the point d, and draw the line b d. Lay out another line g c, and repeat the operation until the eight sides are produced. To lay out rafters, &c., place the main blade of the square against thelower side of the rafter and carry out or continue by marking across the contiguous side the slanted line E, which bears the indication of the desired pitch in inches to foot-for instance, five inches be tween twenty degrees and twenty-five degrecs-and remove the square and continue said line in the opposite direction, so that it shall extend entirely across said side, said last continuation being over that portion covered by the square in the tirstinstance, and the line thus marked is atrightangles to aperpendicular line through the apex of the roof. In like manner braces and batter-posts may be laid out.
Having described my invention and the manner of using the saine, what I claim as new7 teinnl :ingles of said iigures, substantially as and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isshown and described. 1o
