Generally there is provided a square having a quadrant integrally formed with the tongue and blade thereoi and provided with a pair of ar- Y bolt 12D through an. arcuate 'sliot.i:`i. 'Oneedge cuate slots. At a; point adjacent the -junctureof the tongue and blade there is pivotal-1y mounted 'insuch manner "asi to `loe on either iside A`of the 'quadrant aipa'ir of arms linterconnected through one 'of thearouat'e slots -by a -rivet and `:then through the other arcuate slot by means fof a locking bolt. A 'handle is slidably mounted upon the tongue of the 'square and Visf-provided witha 'locking bolt for'holdingiit in preselected Ypositions thereon. "A pair V4of calculating blades is slidab'ly mounted inthe handleataright angle to the Vtongue'o the' square and-so position'edias to each -overlie one'side 'of the quadrant. The curvular yedge of Y-thenuadrant is provided'vvith degree indicia and a seriesofslots' extend jrom such indicia toward lthe tongue :and at right'angles thereto. vThe tongue, arms and the `calculating bladesare Aeach provided withfindicia 'on each `exposed sidethereofv/hereby the-*device 'may beA utilized andread with "either `'of itsfaces exposed to' the 'operator jan'd the device' i-sparticularly'useful in calculating, for example, the proper length of rafters and the like from a given pitch and roof width and provision is made in the lde vice for marking 4such rafter or ithe `like bymeans of 'a pencil through Vslots'provided in 'the quadrant for Athis purpose.
Referringnow moreparticularly to the `:drawings, 'there 'is"s"hown vthereina `squarehaving 1a 'tongue l' and a blade. i l'havin'g integrally formed therewith a quadrant l2 providedW-ith "the zeonventio'n'al arcuate outer edge 't3 adjacent which on 'either 'side .thereof is provided a scale 14 'markedin degrees.
Uponvan axle l5 mounted :in 3the device at'lthe 'center 'of the V'arc of the quadr'ant is revo'lubly mounted a'pair 'of arms i E and il' contaetin'githe opposite faces of the quadrant and interconnected through an .arcuatejslot I8 by means 'of a .rivet E9e-nd also interconnectedbya 'locking of the arm 'i6 yextends radially l"from .the center ofthe axle I5 and a scale 23 is provided adjacent such edge "22. Likewise, one edge 2'4 of the'arm l1 extends radially from the center of the axle I5 and a scale 25 is provided on the arm adjacent such edge 24.
Each of the scales I4 is provided with indicia 26 showing ne degree graduations thereon and from such indicia beginning with that indicating ten degrees and ending with that indicating eighty-five degrees, there extends in each case a slot 21 which is perpendicular to the tongue l0.
A scale 28 is provided on the tongue Ill on one side thereof and a scale 29 is provided on the i 3 tongue along the other side thereof and a slot 30 is formed in the quadrant I2 adjacent the scales 28 and 29.
A handle 3| of generally rectangular shape is slidably mounted on the tongue I which is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 32 along one side thereof for the reception of a hook 33 formed at one end of a locking bolt 34, threaded in the handle 3| and having a knurled head 35 in an opening 36 in the handle 3|.
Slidably mounted in the handle 3| perpendicularly to the tongue |0 is a pair of calculating blades 31 and 38 one of which overlies each face of the tongue l0 and quadrant I2 and which blades are fastened together at their outer ends by means of rivets 39. with a scale `4| along one side edge thereof and the inner face of the blade 31 is provided with a groove 42 which receives therein a, hook 43v formed at one end of a'locking bolt 44 threaded in the handle 3| and having a knurled head 45 in the opening 3B in the handle 3|.
In operation, it will be apparent that the arms I6 and |1 are rotated to a position where the edges 22 and 24 thereof indicate the pitch of a proposed rafter upon the scales I4 whereupon vthe locking bolt is tightened to thereby lock the arms in such position. Thereafter the handle 3| is movedv along the tongue I0 until, for example, the edge of the blade 31 having the scale 40 indicates upon the scale 28 the known span of the rafter, whereupon the head 35 of the locking bolt 34 is turned to thereby lock the handle 3| in such position upon the tongue I0. The blades 31 and 38 are then moved inwardly of the device until they contact the arms I8 and |1 whereupon the head 45 is turned to cause the locking bolt 44 to move its hooked end 43 into locking engagement with the side of the groove 42. The length of the rafter may now be ascertained by reading the scale 23 at the point of contact with the blade 31 and the height of the rafter at its upper end from the horizontal will be indicated by reading the scale 4|) at its juncture with the slot 39. By placing the device in its now locked condition upon a board to be formed into a rafter as aforesaid in such manner that the arm |1 engages the upper side of such board, a pencil may then be run across such board to mark its bottom cut by utilizing the slot as a guide.
To mark the upper cut in pencil upon the board the particular slot 21 adjacent the juncture between the arms |6 and |1 and the scales |4 is used as a pencil guide.
, with the only difference in the two sides of the device being a relative difference in the scales 28 and 29, the former having units of measure- The blade 31 is provided` ment twice the size of the latter whereby the scale 28 is much easier to read with exactness but, it being necessary to double the reading of the scale 28 to secure a proper resulting ligure.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:

A device of the character described comprising a tongue, a, blade formed integrally with the tongue, a quadrant interconnecting the tongue and blade and provided with a plurality of pencil-guiding slots, a pitch arm pivotally connected at the center of the quadrant at either side thereof and extending to the periphery thereof, a handlefslidably mounted upon the tongue, a pair of calculating arms slidably mounted in the handle and lying one on either side of the tongue and quadrant perpendicularly to said tongue and indicia upon the quadrant on either side thereof adjacent the periphery thereof, indicia upon the pitch arms, indicia upon the calculating arms and indicia upon either side of the tongue, said pencil-guiding slots each being perpendicular to the tongue.
2. A device of the character described comprising a tongue, a blade formed integrally with the tongue, a quadrant interconnecting the tongue and blade and provided with a plurality of pencil-guiding slots each being perpendicular to the tongue, a pitch arm pivotally connected at the center of the quadrant at either side thereof and extending to the periphery thereof, a handle slidably mounted upon the tongue, a pair of calculating arms slidably mounted in the handle and lying one on either side' of the tongue and quadrant perpendicularly to said tongue and indicia upon the quadrant on either side thereof adjacent the periphery thereof, indicia upon the pitch arms, indicia upon thel calculating arms, indicia upon either side of the tongue, means for latching the handle to the tongue and means for latching the calculating arms in the handle.
