Patented Nov. 13,1951 I SPRING HAND GRIPPIN G CONTROL GAR- MENT HANGER CONSTRUCTION Joseph Blumenstein, Cold Spring Harbor, N. Y., assignor to Sur-Grip Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York i Application March 22, 1950, Serial No. 151,280
This invention relates to garment hangers for suspending trousers, slacks, skirts and the like, and more particularly is directed to spring actuated, hand-gripping control improved constructions of Wearing apparel accessor articles of the character described.
Among the objects of the invention is to generally improve articles of the character described which shall comprise few and simple parts that are easily and neatly assembled to provide an attractive balanced Wardrobe accessory, which shall be cheap to manufacture, which shall be easy to manipulate, which shall be accidentproof, and which shall be practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of constructions, combination of elements, arrangement of parts hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the claims following. In the accompanying drawing in which possible illustrative embodiments of the invention are shown:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a garment hanger construction embodying the invention, formed principally of sheet metal.
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the improved construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Fig. 3 is a front elevational View of the garment hanger shown in Fig. 1, partly broken away to expose the interior assembly.
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view similar to Fig. 3 showingmodified improved construction formed with metal tubing portion instead of sheet metal, partly broken away to expose the interior assembly, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the improved construction taken on lines 5-5 in Fig. 4.
Referring in detail to the drawing i6 denotes a garment hanger construction for suspension of trousers, slacks, skirts, and the like, embodying the invention. Said hanger construction In may be formed of two telescopingly slideable members II and I2 which, as seen from Figs. 1 to 3, may each be made of sheet metal folded over and bent into an annular cross-sectional structural shape to provide tubular length portions I Ia and I2a, respectively, here shown to be circular in shape, with the member portion I Ia slidable into and mounted to be extended with respect to member portion I2a.
Member I2 may have an outer end I2b of por- 2 Claims. (Cl. 223-95) hanger I0, in parallel alignment with respect to each other. Mounted for pivotal movement to upstand from mid-portions of said members I I and I2 to extend in the opposite direction to and in substantially the same plane of spread retainers I Ic and I 20, there may be provided hand grip levers I Id and IZd. Said lever I Id through spaced offset ears He formed at one end thereof span and connect by means of through or rivet pin I If, with tubular length portion I Ia of member I I at a mid-length thereof, elongable closedended aligned slots I2g being provided on opposite sides of tubular length portion I2a of member I2 to clear said pin II j as a limiting alignment guide for member II in telescopingmovement thereof into member I2. The closed end I211. of said slots I2g may serve as positive limiting stops, at maximum extension of said member I I with respect to member I2 as is clear from Figs. 1 and 2.
The other end of lever IId opposite ears I Ie may also be provided with spaced ears which swingably connect by a hinged means formed by through or rivet pin Illa with interfitted terminal ears I Ih of lever I2d. The other end of lever I2d may also be provided with spaced oifset spanning ears I2h swingably connected by means of through or rivet pin I2 with a mid-length of said tubular length portion In, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A suitable compression spring I3 may be posi- I tioned within the telescoping slideable members II and I2 to extend in abutment with pins II j and I2 for normally urging maximum separation or extension movement of member ii and I2 with spread retainers I I0 and I20, respectively.
As it is desirable to provide a suspension support engaging means for hanger III to conveniently and quickly detachably securing same in a wardrobe clothes closet or the like, there may be provided a suitable hook I4 extending up from the hinged connection of said hand grip levers I Id and I201 at pin I 0a. As seen from Figs. 1 to 3 said hook I4 may be integrally made to extend outwardly upward from grip lever I2d beyond said hinged connection provided by pin Illa, said hook I4 preferably beingpositioned and 3 curve shaped so that when said hook i4 is hun in a wardrobe closet or rack support hanger ID with or without a garment said hanger ill will be suspended in a balanced state with slide members II and I2 extending substantially in a horizontal plane.
Lever I hi and [2d may each be form'eclwlith suitable finger and hand contour portions ll lm and l2m, respectively, for comfortably accommodating the hand gripping operation in the manner hereinafter described.
From the above description and drawings the practical utility of hanger ill will 'be apparent. After constructing the parts described above and assembling same as shown in the drawing, by applying a hand squeeze action on gripping levers lid and l2d, said levers will pivot on pins Illa, Hi and I2 and tubular member II will be telescoped into member I2 with the ear ends Ileand lZh swinging toward each other against the action of spring I3 bearing on pins Hi and [2 This hand squeezing operation brings spread retainers He and 12c in closed aligned relation so that the latter may be readily inserted into cuffed bottom openings B of trouser T in the well understood manner. Releasing the hand grip on levers 1 Id and l2d will permit spring I3 to cause members H and I! to be extended up to the limited movement permitted by pin Hf striking on slot end I29. By making the maximum expandable distance between the spread retainers Ho and 120 adjustable for a range-of various trouser bottom sizes corresponding to the width of folded trouser bottom openings B, trouser T having bottom openingB within such range will be releasably engaged by said retainers Ho and We and suspended in a desired trouser position free from wrinkling as is clear from Fig. 1. i
In order that accident-proof hand grip on levers lid and I241 be provided, said levers may have their longitudinal edges formed with inturned rounded flanges, that .is, U-shaped in cross-section, and all other moveable parts shielded to make manipulation thereof safe and free .from causing possible injury even when carelessly handled.
To make spread retainers He and 120 .more effective to engage in the trouser openings B,said retainers may from outer facing edges of each be provided with spaced apart notches ilk and 12m, respectively.
A modified construction embodying the invention is shown in .Fig. 4 in which hanger 2!! 'is constructed of tubular length portions Zia and 22a of pipe or tube stock instead of bent sheet material above described forhanger l and grip levers 21d and 22d of said hanger .20 being made similar to hand grip lever lid and 12d, respectively, and pins 2! 22 and a like pins H 12] and Illa respectively, with compression spring 23 positioned between pins 2H and 22f, and pin 21] being slidably mounted in elongated slots 22g.
'Said grip lever 22d may also be elongated beyond pin 20a to provide extending hook 24.
It will thus be seen that there is provided improved garmentrhangers in which the several objects of the invention are achieved and which are well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments may be made of the above "invention and as various changes may be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matters herein set forth and shown in the accompanying drawing are to be interpreted as illustrative and not in .a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
