' cinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio,have invented certain newand useful linprovements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a sewing-machine in such a manner as to enable a single vibrating arm to perform the twofold duty of operating the shuttle-lever and also elevating at the proper momenta reciprocating feedbar. This result is accomplished by engaging the lower end of the vibrating arm with the heel of the shuttle-lever in the usual manner, and providing said arm with a roller, or stud, or link, or other device capable of alternately raising and lowering the free end of a lever or crank attached to one extremity of a rock-shaft, the other extremity of which shaft carries thelifter that operates the feed-bar, as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the under side of the cloth-plate of a sew ing-machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the standard of the machine, the position of the fly-wheel being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the cloth-plate, taken in the plane of the feed-bar.
A represents the clotlrpla-te, and B the standard of any approved form of sewing-machine, said standard having journaled in it a customary driving-shaft, G, the fly-wheel of which is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Fitted within standard B is a pin, 1), upon which vibrates an arm, E, whose upper end is actuated by a customary eccentric on shaft (J, while the lower end of said arm terminates with a ball, F, that engages with the forked heel of the horizontally-vibrating shuttie-lever G.
Situated above'the ball F, and projecting laterally from the arm E, is a stud, H, which may carry a roller, if desired, said stud or roller being adapted to play against the cam or swell I of a crank or lever, J, when said arm vibrates from side to side within the standard B. Crank J is secured to one end of a rock-shaft, K, journaled in suitable hangers, to a, depending from cloth-plate A, the other end of said shaft having secured to it a lifter, L.

From the above description it will be readily understood that the vibration of arm It rocks the teed-lever O on its pivot, which motion of said lever in connection with the action of spring 1? imparts the desired reciprocations to the feed-bar N. It is also apparent that the vibration of the other arm, E, causes its stud or roller H to act against the swell I, and thereby alternately raise and lower the free end of lever J. Consequently shaft K is rocked in its bearings a a, and litter L is accordingly raised and lowered, so as to impart the desired vertical play of feed bar N,
"and by properly adjusting the lever J and lifter L on said shaft the motion of bar N can be regulated with the utmost nicety.
As my improvement enables the vibrating arm E to perform the twofold purpose of driving the shuttle-lever G and operating the devices that lift the feed-bar at the proper moment, it is evident the construction of the machine is simplified and its correct running assured.
The invention may be modified by attaching one end or" a link or other coupling device to the stud H, and securing the upper end of said link to the crank J, so as to cause the latter to alternately rise and lower as the arm E swings from side to side within the standard B, although in some cases said arm may be located externally of the standard.
I claim as my invention- In combination with a vibrating arm, E, provided with a st-ud or roller, H, and operating the shuttle-lever of a sewing-machine, substantially in the manner herein described, the lever J, having a swell, I, and connected to a rock-shaft, K, which latter carries a device, L, for lifting the reciprocating feed-bar N, as and for the purpose stated.
