Description

Oct. 30, 1951 R. H. BREITBARTH v END GATE CONSTRUCTION Filed Dec. 12, 1949 INVENTOR. 170/106 H- firei/ar/fi Patented Oct. 30, 1 951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ENDGATE att inment:
Application December 12, 1949, Serial No. 132,513
3 Claims. (01. 296-52) My invention relates to an end gate construction.
An object of my invention is to provide an end gate which is readily installed in place or removed with a minimum of effort, and which includes certain engaged side portions so arranged to provide easy removal or replacement, and which construction can be manufactured at a very reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the end gate with the attachments of my construction as used with a wagon,
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail,
Figure 4 is a rear elevation of a modification,
Figure 5 is a further modification, and
Figure 6 is a modified detail.
I have used the character Hi to designate the sides of the wagon with which my end gate is to be used, and the character II to designate the Figure 6 illustrates wherein the angle member I! can be replaced by means of a similar member 20 having the angular portion 2| and securing portion 22, this arrangement providing a construction dispensing with the spacers I6.
Figures 4 and 5 illustrate an arrangement whereby the same features can be employed with the exception that the members I! and I3 extend only a fairly short distance from the bottom of the box, thus providing means wherein the end gate can be inserted without raising the gate to the top of the box. In this construction the cross section of the elements will appear exactly as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the angles being made of identical configuration, it being observed that the end gate can then be placed in position as shown in Figure 4 without raising it to the top of the box. In order to close the corners more tightly, if such is desired, the additional angle members 23 can be secured to the end gate 12 as shown in Figure 5, the angle members 23 also having the further flanged portion 24 whereby the corner is completely covered.
It will now be seen that I have provided the various advantages set forth in the objects of my invention with various other advantages being bottom thereof. I have further used the character [2 to designate an end gate of any desired construction, to which end gate are to be attached the members of my invention to provide the necessary results.
I have further used the character l3 to indi- I cate a pair of angle members which are securely attached to the sides l0, suchangle members including the portions 14, and attached to the end gate H at 15 are the spacers l6, these spacers being further secured at the same points I5 to the further larger angle members I1, having the portions I8.
. bers l3, and the end gate I2 is then allowed to drop into place, whereby it is then snugly and firmly held against displacement, and whereby it can then be removed in the reverse manner.
This provides an efiicient closure at the corners as well as ease in placement and removal.
readily apparent.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with a wagon box, an end gate construction for the same comprising vertically positioned angle members secured to the ends of the side walls of said wagon box, said angle members having portions spaced from the ends of said side walls, an end gate including further vertically positioned angle members secured thereto and spaced therefrom, said further angle members receiving said angle members when said end gate is installed, the ends of said end gate being then positioned between the ends of said side walls and said portions.
2.. In combination with a wagon box, an end gate construction for the same comprising vertically positioned angle members secured to the ends of the side walls of said Wagon box, said angle members having portions spaced from the ends of said side walls, an and gate including further vertically positioned angle members sea slightly modified form cured thereto and spaced therefrom, said further angle members receiving said angle members when said end gate is installed, the ends of said end gate being then positioned between the ends of said side walls and said portions, said angle members being substantially shorter than the depth of said wagon box to provide means whereby said end gate can be installed at a lower level than the height of said Wagon box.
3. In combination with a wagon box, an end' gate construction for the same comprising vertically positioned angle members secured to the" ends of the side walls of said wagonrbQX;.said1 angle members having portions spaced from the ends of said side walls, an end gate includingfurther vertically positioned angle members se cured thereto and spaced therefrom, said further angle members receiving said angle members 7 of said side walls and said portions, said angle members being substantially shorter than the depth of said Wagon box to provide means whereby said end gate can be installed at a lower level than the height of said wagon box, enclosing angle members secured above said other angle members to provide means for enclosing the corners of said wagon box when said end gate is installed.
