With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawings Fig. l is a perspective view of an auto washing mat constructed in accordance with the invention.
Flg. 2 is a bottom plan view of the mat portion thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section through said mat portion.
Fig. 4 is a top perspective view of a Water bag embodied in the device.
Fig. 5 is a bottom perspective view of said water bag.
Fig. 6 is a reduced top plan view of the washing pad of the device.
Referring to the drawings in detail, I provide an elongated tubular handle 5, and telescoping in one end thereof is the extensible grip 6 adapted to be secured in selected positions of adjustment relative to the tubular handle by means of the thumb screw 1. The inner end of the elongated tubular handle 5 is split, and the split portions are outturnedto provide ears 8 secured; by: rivetsn9l to one. end: 'ofa yoke' I I the arms-.ofkt which have inturnedv freeends H removably and; pivotally positioned:within:.-the ends ofxaztube- I 2;; formed at itsv ends with feet s I3riveted at 1 litterv diametrically oppositeportions of adisc. water-bag; The; hose fittingss23 extench'upwarde-. ly-c: through openings 1 Mitformet in: the; plate: I]: and are adapted to have removably connected thereto hoses 25. One hose 25 can lead from a hydrant or tank of clear water, and said clear water can be fed to the interior of the water bag either by gravity or by hydrant pressure as desired. The other hose 25 can extend from a tank containing soap-treated water or the like, with said tank being disposed at an elevated position so as to feed the soap-treated water by gravity to the interior of the water bag. When the clear and soap-treated water arrives within the water bag, they are blended therewithin before being discharged through the bottom of the water bag through a plurality of spaced grommets 26 defining discharge openings in the bottom of said bag.
The blended water is fed thereafter to a cleansing pad comprising the wool bottom portion 21 that constitutes the contact surface with the vehicle to be washed. The wool portion 21 is securely fastened either adhesively or naturally to the leather backing 28, to the marginal portion of which is secured the annular canvas collar 29, the outer periphery of which is upwardly extended as at 30, and secured either adhesively or by other suitable means to the marginal portion of an elastic annular member 3 I, adapted to overlie the marginal part of the plate I! and grip said plate for the purpose of holding the cleansing pad securely to the plate in position under the water bag.
I believe the assembly and operation of an automobile washing pad formed in accordance with the invention can be readily noted at this time. The entire handle portion, as will be readily observed, can be removed entirely so that the wash ing mat can be applied directly to such automobile parts as the wheels, tires, etc. When using the device with the handle portion removed, the
tube [2 itself comprises the handle that is readily gripped by the user.
If the handle member is to be used for reaching parts of the vehicle that are not as accessible 7 as those described immediately above, it is necessary only that the arms In of the handle yoke be resiliently spread apart so as to permit the inturned ends I l thereof to enter the opposite ends of the tube l2. By this means the entire handle portion of the device is pivotally attached to the washing head thereof.
Considering the operation of the head or mat portion itself, hoses 25 are attached to the hose fittings or nipples 23, and clear and treated water can be supplied to the water bag either separately or together. Within the water bag, the different liquids applied thereto are blended and this blending action is aided by the fact that in the meantime the user will be pressing downwardly upon the surface to be washed, thus alternately squeezing and expanding the sponge 22 contained within the water bag. In any event the blended water is then fed in the direction of the arrows shown in Fig. 3, through the grommets 26, afterwhich the blended water is forced through openings 32 formed in the surface of the leather backing 28 of the pad 21. The blended water is thus dispersed evenly and uniformly through the wool cleansin member 21 and thus is applied to the surface of the vehicle while theuser is at the same time applying normal, light rubbing action of the washing pad across the vehicle surface.
' What is'claimed is:
1. In a washing device a top plate including a peripheral depending flange defining a recess in the underside of the plate; a water bag proportioned to fill said recess completely, the water bag including inlet fittings projecting through and engaged by said plate to retain the water bag within the recess, a bottom face having a plurality of outlet openings, said bottom face being formed from flexible material, said bottom face being flexible toward the plate in the central area of the water bag and consituting means for compressing the water bag at said central area, said flange preventing compression of the water bag in the marginal area thereof, and sponge material completely filling said water bag.
2. In a washing device a flat plate including a narrow dependin peripheral flange, said flange defininga shallow recess under the plate; and a water bag completely filling said recess and proportioned to a thickness approximately equal to the Width of said flange, said water bag including a flexible top face lining the walls of said recess, inlet fittings secured to said top face and engaged in said openings of the plate to retain the water ba within the recess, a flexible bottom face having a plurality of outlet openings secured at its periphery to the periphery of the top face, said bottom face being flexible in the direction of the top face in the central area of the water bag for compression of the water bag in said central area, said flange of the plate rigidifying the periphery of the water bag to prevent compression of the water bag in the peripheral area thereof, and sponge material completely fillin the space between the top and bottom faces of said water bag.
