In air-cooled engines with cylinders arranged in V-shape a sheet metal casing or the like is usually arranged around the engine cylinders for directing the heated air towards the Venetian grill of the engine hood in such manner as to avoid such air being mixed with the fresh cool air supplied by the fans. It has already been proposed to provide a special flap, enabling according to requirements warm or cool or mixed up cool and hot air to be admitted to the carburetter.
According to this invention said flap is preferably replaced by a hollow cylindrical body which extends transversely through said sheet metal casing in such manner that the cold air can be led to the carburetter from said hollow cylindrical body.
The cylindrical body has arranged therein a rotatable cylindrical valve member and said casing, said hollow cylindrical body and said valve member are provided with suitably arranged openings so that depending upon the adjustment of the valve member there will be supplied to the carburetor only non-heated air from the space outside the casing, or only heated air from the space inside said casing or air from both said spaces in any desired ratio. In the rotatable valve member a filter material is provided consisting of metal wool and minute bodies serving as an efcient air lter. The inner space of said body together with the valve member are connected through a pipe with the carburetter.
The accompanying drawing shows merely by way of example diagrammatically an embodiment of the object of the present invention.
The sheet metal casing I, surrounding the cylinders 2 of the engine, is provided in its top portion, where the hot air is discharged, with a hollow cylindrical body 3 which extends transversely through the casing I. The interior of the body 3 communicates by apertures 4 in the wall of the casing I with the atmosphere so that cold air is adapted to pass through these apertures Il into the body 3. Inside the body 3 a rotatable valve member 5 is arranged on pivots t, one of which is provided with a crank 1 for the valve adjustment. Apertures 8 in the body 3 are adapted to connect the space inside the casing I with apertures II) in the valve member 5 to admit heated air from the casing I into the valve member 5. The latter has also end openings 9 adapted to communicate with the openings 4 provided in the casing. A central opening II conducts the air entering the body 3 and the valve member 5 respectively, into a pipe. I2 which leads to the carburetter I3 fixed on the manifold I4 of the engine.` In the valve member 5 fillings I5 are provided consisting of metal gauze or metallic chips through which the air is filtered before passing into the carburetter.
In the position of the rotatable valve member as shown in the drawing the carburetter will be supplied solely with heated air. Upon rotatable adjustment of the valve member 5 cold air enters into the hollow valve member through the apertures 4 and 9. Upon a predetermined rotative adjustment of the valve member 5 the apertures 8 will be completely closed, but the apertures 4 will be completely open, so that only cold air will be supplied to the carburetter.
I claim:
l. In a device for supplying air to the carburetter of an air cooled internal combustion engine with V-shaped cylinder arrangement, a .casing extending around the cylinders for conducting the air heated by the cylinders into the atmosphere, a hollow cylindrical body extending transversely through said casing, a hollow cylindrical valve member rotatably adjustable in said hollow cylindrical body, means for rotatably adjusting said valve member, said :cylindrical valve member having apertures in its end walls and in its cylindrical wall adapted to be brought into communication with corresponding apertures in said casing and said hollow cylindrical body respectively, to selectively admit cold atmospheric air, heated air from the inside of said casing, and a mixture of said atmospheric air and heated air into said valve member, and means for conducting the air from said hollow cylindrical valve member to the carburetter of the engine.
2. In a device for supplying air to the carburetter of an air cooled internal combustion. engine with V-shaped cylinder arrangement, a. casing extending around the cylinders for conducting the air heated by the cylinders into the atmosphere, a hollow cylindrical body extending transversely through said casing, a hollow cylindrical valve member ,rotatably adjustable in said hollow cylindrical body, means for rotatably ad- 3 justing said valve member, said cylindrical valve member having apertures in its end walls and in its cylindrical Wall adapted to be brought into communication with corresponding apertures in said casing and said hollow cylindrical body respectively, to selectively admit cold atmospheric air, heated air from the inside of saidcasing, and a' mixture of 'said atmospheric i and heated air into said valve meriber, means" for c5or`idct-i ing the air from said hollow cylindrical valve member to the carburetter of the engine. aridair filtering means arranged said rotatable valve member for cleaning the air before it' is'V admitted into said means which conductsI the air to the carburetter.
