To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GORDON MCKAY, of Newport, county of Newport, State of Rhode Island, haveinvented an Improvement in Nailing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specication.
My invention relates to nailing-machines for boot and shoe work, and has for its object to produce a poweractuated machine by which the driver-bar is automatically raised into position to make its stroke, and is then automaticallyT disengaged from :its actuating-power and retained there until released by the operator pressingthe shoeagainstatripping device next the nail-tube, which effects the release of the driving-bar and permits it to make its stroke. As the driver is released and descends the actuating-power is again automatically applied to again raise the driver-bar to its uppermost position, whereit is retained as before. As herein shown, the driver-bar, acted upon by a spring to make its downward stroke and by a snailcam to elevate it in the usual manner, is provided with toggle-jointed levers, which, when I the said driver-bar is raised, are straightened to retain it thus raised until the joint of the said levers is broken. The main sh aft, carrying the cam by which the drivenbar is raised, is provided with a drivingpulley, loose thereon, and a friction disk or clutch splined thereon, and a clutch-shipper is employed, controlled by mechanism connected with the driver-bar in such manner that when the said bar arrives at the end of its upward movement the said friction-disk is disengaged from the drivingpulley, which thereafter runs freely upon the main cam-shaft, which is locked by the said disk, thev parts remaining in this position until the joint of the toggle-lever is broken. In this instance the end of the toggle-lever not connected with the driver-bar is mounted ou a rocker-shaft provided with a cam which controls the shipping-lever, and is also provided with a tappet, properlyY arranged relative to the movable trip mounted on the nail-tube or nose of the machine, to be acted upon by the pressureof the article in which the nail is to be driven toward the said nose, so as to break the toggle -joint and permit the driver-bar to descend, and in so doing to again engage the friction disk with the driving-pulley, so
that the driver bar is again raised and retainedas before.

The parts are shown in the drawings at the instant when the driver has completed its downward stroke. The driver-bar a, its actuating-spring b, (shown in this instance as acting thereon through the intervention of a pivoted arm, 0,) and its actuating-cam d, mounted on the main shaft e, may be of any usual construction, the mechanism for feeding the nails to be driven not being shown, as it forms no part of the present invention.
The main cam-shaft c has a driving-pulley, f, loose thereon, anda friction-clutch boX, g, (shown as-a tapering frictiondisk,) splined thereon, so that when pressed against the said pulleyfthe shaft c will be actuated thereby to rotate the cam d and elevate the driver ain the usual manner. The said clutch-box gis operated by a shipper, It, (shown as a bent lever,) and is provided with a notched controlling-plate, t',whch,in co-operation with a roller, j, mounted on the framework of the machine, will retain the said clutch engaged with the pulley until in its rotation the notch is brought opposite to the said roller, when the clutch may be disengaged by the action of a spring, 7c, on the shipping-lever h, the clutch and shaft e being thus locked by the said roller and prevented from further rotation until the clutch is again engaged with the pulley f, 4the disk 1l bein g removed from the roller j, which is automatically done during the downward stroke of 9o is, in the movement of the said shaft caused by the toggle-lever in straightening the driver then being lifted by the cam d, removed from IOO Q 257mm beneath the roller lt at the end of the shippinglever h, leaving it free to be acted upon by the spring 7c to disen gage the clutch g from the driving-pulley j' as soon as the notchof the platet' arrives at the roller j, which happens just as the driver reaches its highest position, thus disconnecting the actuating-power and locking the main shaft and driver-actuating 4cam d in the proper position, as shown in Fig. 1, to permit the driver-bar to descend after breaking or springing the toggle-lever.
A tappetarrn, o, mounted upon the rockeri shaft m, is provided with a pin or projection, p, which is brought by the rotation of the said shaft caused by the straightening of the levers, down upon the tripper or releasing device r, shown as having a sleeve loose upon the end of the nail-tube or nose, and projecting` slightly below the bottom thereof, so that when the article to be nailed is pressed toward the nailtube to receive the nail the tappet-arm o is raised, rotating the rocker-shaft m and levci` l connected therewith sufficiently to break the toggle-joint and permit the driver to give its blow. During the descent ot' the driver and consequent rotation of the rocker-shaft on the clutch-operating cam n acts upon the shipper h to automatically engage the clutch g and driving-pulley, which thus connects the driving-pulley with the shaft c, causes the latter to make a revolution sufficient to lift the driver-bar when it is retained, as described, and the clutch is again automatically disengaged and the cam-shaft disconnected from the actuating-power andlocked, all automatically, so that the operator has merely to place the boot or shoe against the end of the nail-tube each time a nail is to be driven.
I do not broadly claim a loose pulley and clutch to drive the shaft one revolution; nor do I broadly claim locking the driver-bar in elevated position with its actuating-spring compressed.
I claiml. In a nail-driving mechanism, a driver-bar and driver and device to keep it elevated and its spring compressed, combined with a driven loose pulley, a clutch, clutch-controlling device, and a tripping device next the nail-tube, the movement of which device by the shoe as it is pressed against the nail-tube effects the disengagement of the driver-bar, in order that it may be operated by its spring, and also the engagement of the clutch or disk and driven pulley for a sufficient time to automatically lift the driver-bar and compress its spring, the clutch and pulley being automatically disengaged as soon as the driver-bar is again lifted, for the purpose substantially as described.
2. The driver-actuating shaft and drivingpulley and clutch thereon, combined with the driver and toggle-levers connected therewith, and the clutch-controlling cam operated by the said levers, substantially as described.
3. The driver-actuating shaft and clutch therefor, com bined with the driver and togglelevers connected therewith, and the clutch controlling cam operated by the said levers, and the tappet-arm and trip therefor operated by the article being nailed to break the togglejoint, substantially as described.
