This invention relates to a gate.
An object of the invention is to provide a gate of the character described which may be readily opened by a motor vehicle and is so mounted that when in fully opened position it will automatically move toward closed position but the initial movement toward closed position will be retarded so as to give ample time for the vehicle to clear the gateway without being struck by the gate as it moves toward closed position.
It is another object of the invention to provide a gate of the character described which is so mounted that as the gate moves toward closed position its momentum will be accelerated so as to insure the latching of the gate when it reache final closed position.
It is another object of the invention to provide a gate of the character described which is of very simple construction, which may be'readily mounted on the supporting post and which will be positive in operation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following specification which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gate shown in closed position,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side view thereof shown in fully open position, and
Figure 8 is a plan view of the gate shown, in full lines, in fully open position and in dotted lines in closing position.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate the same parts in each of the figures, the numerals l and 2 designate the top and bottom rails, respectively, of the frame and the numerals 3 and 4 designate the end members of the frame.
These members are secured together by conventional means. They are preferably formed of metal rods or pipe welded together and their corners may be braced by diagonal metal top and bottom braces as 5, 5 and 6, 3 whose ends are secured by conventional means to the adjacent parts of the frame.
The body of the gate is preferably formed of wire mesh, as 1, and secured to the end members 3 and 4 of the frame there is an elongated bumper plate 8 at the required elevation.
As will be noted from an inspection of Figure 1, the end member 3 is at right angles to the rails l and 2 but the end member 4 is slightly diagonal with respect to said rails.
The numeral 9 designates the gate post. Secured to this post near the ground surface there 5 Claims. (01. 39---84) 2 is a bearing member l0 whose upper side is formed with a cup-shaped socket ll.
The lower end of the end member 4 is extended beneath the lower rail 2 and is rounded off and is seated in said socket.
Secured to the top of the post 9 there is a hinge plate i 2 which extends from the post 9 in parallel relation with the gate when the gate is in closed position and the extended end of this hinge plate is provided with a longitudinal slot l3.
The upper end of the end member 4 is extended above the top rail I through said slot and fastened to said upwardly extended end there is a collar l4 which bears against the under side of the plate 12 so as to maintain the lower end of the end member 4 in the socket ll during the operation of the gate.
It will be noted from an inspeotionof Figure 3 that the socket H is located slightly closer to the gate post 9 than the inner end of the slot l3 so that the end member 4 will in any of its positions diverge upwardly with respect to the gate post 9.
When the gate is in closed position it will be parallel with the road surface and the upper end of the end member 4 will be at the outer end of the slot l3 as is indicated in Figure 1.
When it is desired to open the gate by a motorist the motor vehicle may be moved so that its bumper will contact the bumper plate 8 and may then be moved forwardly to unlatoh the free end of the gate.
When the gate is unlatched the motor vehicle may be speeded up to impart suflicient momentum to the gate to cause it to swing into open. position.
As the gate moves toward open position its free end will rise and lean out of balance and after it passes a angle, relative to the closed position, its momentum and the weight of the gate, acting as a lever, will cause the upper end of: the end member 4 to move to the opposite, or inner end of the slot I3 as indicated in full lines in Figure 3 so that the gate will approach a vertical position and after the gate passes said 90 angle its opening momentum will speed up.
When in fully open position the gate will still lean slightly forwardly, that is, toward closed position. This is due to the fact that the socket I I is somewhat closer the post 9 than the inner end of the slot l3. Therefore, the gate will now start its return movement toward closed position but this initial return movement will be relatively slow until the gate passes said 90 angle and thereupon the upper end of the end member 4 will move to the outer end of the slot [3 as inautomatically latch by means of the latching mechanism.
The drawings and description are illustrative merely while the broad principle of the inven tion will be defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
