This invention relates to'adjustablesupport devices, and'lmore particularly to `a .device to be'used for* supportingV doors, window sash, screenv sash, and1 the like, during painting thereof.
A main object of the invention lis to provide a novel and improved adjustable support device for holding a door, window sash, screen sash, or the like. ina desired position while 'being painted, said device being'verysimple in constructiongeasy to adjust, and allowing the object-beingpainted to be `rotated to anyv desired position in;` an expeditious manner.
A furtherobject of the invention is to Aprovide an improved adjustable support deviceV for holding a windowsash, door, or .the like, during-painting, saiddevice being adjustable to secure differentsizes of window sash or-doors therein, the device being inexpensive to manufacture, sturdy in construction, and providing av greatv saving of time and labor in painting a door, window sash, screen sash, or the like.
Further objects and advantages of theinvention willbecome apparent from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings, II designates a tripod structure comprising a pair of horizontal plate members I2 and I3, to which are secured the three downwardly-divergent and outwardlybent identical supporting legs I4, the upper portions of the legs, shown at I5, extending through -tical plate member '29.

slidably received in the channel member Il adjacent theflanges I9, the plate 2l having a metal pad element 23secured thereto at its intermediate portion andv located adjacent the main wall of the channel member shown at 24. Designated at 25 is a block member extending between the flanges I9, I'9, and secured to the block member 25 by means of bolts 26 is a U-shaped strap bar 2T, the bolts 2B passing through pad element 23, plate 2I, block 25.` and strap bar 2l, as shown in Figure 5. Secured' between the legs of strap bar 2l is a rectangular wooden block 2S. Disposed in a hexagonal recess inblock 231s ahexagonal nut 3| located inwardly of plate member 29 through which bolt 30 is threaded. When the bolt 30 is advanced inwardly, its inner endl is engageable with the main wall 24 of the channel member Il to frictionally lock the plate 'ZI with respect to said channel member by causing the beads 22 to engage theiianges I9 as Well as by engagement of said inner end'with said main wall. The block 28 may, therefore, be secured at a desired elevation with respect tothe channel member Il, said block serving-'as av support for the lower edge of a window sash or the like to be supported for paintmg.
Telescopically received in the sleeve I6 is a tubular post member 33, the top end of the sleeve I6 being inwardly compressible, as by the provision of a slit 34 therein and. being provided with a clamping band 35. Band 35 has end lugs 36 through which passes a clamping bolt 31, whereby the post member 33 may be clamped in the sleeve |6 in a vertically-adjusted position therem.
Designated at 38 and 39 are large disc members which are secured together and are bolted to a plate member 40. Extending centrally through the disc members 38 and 39, through plate member 40 and through the upper portion of post member 33 is a bolt 4| provided with a wing nut 42. The disc members 39, 38, may be clamped in a desired rotated position around the axis of bolt 4| by tightening the wing nut 42.
Secured to the disc member 39 Ais a rectangular vertical plate member 43. Securedto the outer face of plate member 43 at the side margins of said plate member are the respective pairs of blocks 44, 45 and 46, 41. Secured to the outer face of plate member 43 at the mid-portions thereof are the respective upper and lowerI blocks 48 and 49. Secured to said outer face between the blocks 48 and 49 is a nut member 59.
The upper blocks 44, 48 and 48 are formed adjacent plate member 43 with horizontallyaligned grooves, shown at 5|, 52 and 53. The lower blocks 45, 49 and 41 are formed with similar horizontally-aligned grooves 54, 55 and 56. Designated at 51 is a first U-shaped clamping frame having top and bottom arms 58 and 59,
respectively, slidably received in the aforemen-` tioned aligned grooves, as shown in Figure 1. Designated at 69 is a second U-shaped clamping frame having top and bottom arms 6| and 62 likewise slidably received in said grooves inwardly of the arms 58 and 59, the ends of the frames, shown respectively at 63 and 64 being located outwardly adjacent the respective sides of the plate member 43. The end of frame 51 is formed with a vertical upstanding flange 65 and the end of frame 69 is formed with a vertical upstanding ange 65. The ilange 65 carries inwardly-projecting teeth 61 and the flange 66 carries inwardly-projecting teeth 68.
Rotatably carried by flange 65 is a threaded rod 69 extending threadedly through nut 50 and provided with a hand crank 19 outwardly adjacent the end 63 of frame 51. By rotating hand crank 19 the frame 51 may be moved toward or away from the nut 59. The inwardly-opposing edges of arms 6| and 62 of frame 69 are formed with spaced notches 1|. Pivoted to the plate member 43 are respective dogs 12 and 13' engageable in said notches. Pivoted to dog 12 is a toggle arm 14 and connecting the intermediate portion of arm 14 and the intermediate portion of dog 13 is a link bar 15. From Figure 1 it will be seen that the dogs 12 and 13 may be locked in engagement with the notches 1| by rotating arm 14 clockwise past a dead center position with respect to link bar 15. The dogs may be disengaged from notches 1| by rotating arm 14 counterclockwise, as viewed in Figure 1.
In operation, a window sash or the like may be secured to the device by placing same between the flanges 65 and 66, the bottom edge thereof being supported, if so desired, on the block 28. The hand crank 19 is then rotated to move the frame 51 inwardly and to cause the sash to be clamped between the teeth 68 and 61 of the clamping frames. Coarse adjustments for different widths may be made by engaging the dogs 12 and 13 in dlierent notches of the arms 6| and 62 of frame 60.
The object to be painted may be rotated to any desired position by loosening wing nut 42, setting the object in the desired position, and then re-tightening said wing nut. Adjustments for height may be made by loosening wing nut 31.
The block 28 may be lowered after the object to be painted is clamped between the teeth 68 and 61 by loosening the wing screw 39 allowing the plate 2| to be moved downwardly in the channel member |1.
Although a specific embodiment of an adjustable support device for holding window sash, doors, or the like, while being painted, has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled vin the art.A Therefore, it is intended that vno limitations be placed on the invention except as dened by the scope of the appended claim.
'What is claimed is:
An adjustable support device of the character described comprising a base, a vertical post member secured to said base, a vertical guide member secured to said base, a support element slidably mounted in said vertical guide member, means releasably locking said support element in said vertical guide member, a plate member rotatably secured to the upper portion of said post member, parallel inwardly-facing guide track elements carried by said plate member, a pair of opposing clamping frames slidably positioned in said guide track elements for longitudinal movement therealong, respective upstanding opposing jaw elements carried by the ends of said clamping frames, and means for adjustably securing said clamping frames with respect to the plate member, said last-named means comprising longitudinally-spaced notched portions formed in the arms of one of the clamping frames, respective dogs pivoted to the plate member and engageable in said notched portions, means for releasably locking the dogs in notch-engaging positions, a longitudinal shaft secured rotatably in the end of the other clamping frame and extending parallel to the guide track elements, a nut secured to the plate member threadedly receiving said shaft, and a crank handle carried by said shaft.
