UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS It. W. KUNTZE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
MANUFACTURE OF LOCKET-RIMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,903, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed December 9, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS It. W. KUNTZE, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in the Manufacture of Locket-Rims, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of locketrims which are made of sheet metal and struck up so as to form the outer rim and the inner field-piece in one piece of metal; and it consists in an improved process of forming a locket-rim in one piece from sheet metal and providing the same at one edge with a groove for the joint of the locket, said groove being struck up in the formingdie.
Locket-rims heretofore made in one piece from sheet metal have not been provided with a stamped groove for the joint but this groove has been made by means of cutters after the stamping of the rim, thus requiring ,extra thickness of stock; otherwise when the stock is thin the metal will be cut through and the joint be weakened. For this reason rims made, as heretofore, in one piece have been discarded and the rim made in two parts, the outer rim being one piece and the field-piece another, having the groove for the joint struck in the edge of the field-piece previous to the attachment of the rim thereto by soldering. By my improvement agreat practical saving is effected in the manufacture of cheap lockets.
Figure 1 represents aplan view of the original plate of stock. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of the same, taken in theline sea; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section, showing the product of the first operation in the formation of the rim from the, plate shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 represents the product of the second operation in the process, Fig. 5 the product of the third step, and Fig. 6 that ot the fourth. Fig. 7 represents a back view of the finished locket-rim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figs. 1 and 2, A is a piece of rolled sheet metal cut in proper oval shape to form up into the required locket-rim. The plate A is first forced into a proper die to throw up the encircling edge a a, as shown in Fig. 3. It is then struck in a die to the form shown in Fig. 4, the flange b being simply the surplus stock which flows outward eled rim cl d and in cutting ott' the surplus flange b. The raised edge a a is then struck in a die and turned inward, as shown at a a in Fig. 6, which represents a transverse section of the finished rim. The groove f(shown in theplan view, Fig. 7) is struck in the metal plate at the second operation, the result of which is shown in Fig. at, in order to form a suitable recess for the joint of the locket, the proper location of the required pieces of hollow wire to form thejoint being indicated by the lines 0 c, indented by the plunger and die.
' I claim as my invention- The described process for forming a locketrim and field-piece in one piece of stock, with ajoi'nt groove in the edge of the field-piece, which consists, first, in striking up the disk to a cup form, (shown in Fig. 3;) second,in striking up the beveled rim of the field-piece and the groove for the joint at one operation, as shown in Fig. 4; third, in cutting out the central portion of the bottom of the cup and re moving the surplus exterior flange of the rim, as shown in Fig. 5; fourth, in bending the raised rim inward, as shown in Fig. 6, and thus completing the locket-rim.
GUSTAVUS R. \V. KUNTZE.
