Patented Sept. 18, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WINDOW LAUNDRY DRIER Louis Traverse, Jamaica, N. Y. Application June 3, 1949, Serial No. 97,041
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a window laundry dryer.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a laundry dryer which can be applied to a window no matter what its width dimensions may be wherein the clothes supporting elements will be conveniently located and releasable to be removed with the clothes and thereby to elimihate the uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous procedure in the hanging of clothes on the dryers and pulley lines of the present day types.
It is another object of the invention to provide a laundry dryer which has particular use for apartment living and which is attachable to the exterior of a window frame and which can be readily collapsed to lie in its collapsed state within the window frame and out of the way and. which can be easily extended to its use position by simply unfolding the hinge parts and thrusting them outwardly of the window opening to hang thereover and which is not only adapted for the hanging of clothes but for the airing of bedding sheets, ornamental plants and flower pots, coats and other items needing frequent exposure to the outside atmosphere.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a window laundry dryer which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install upon the window openings, light in weight, easily managed and safe, easy to maintain and eificient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the window laundry dryer extended from a window opening with the transverse hanging strips mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the window dryer taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the outer end construction of the dryer.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view of the device in its retracted position within the window opening.
Fig. 6 is vertical sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary and perspective View showing the retaining clip for the securement of the parts when they are in their retracted position in the window opening.
Fig. 8 is a perspective View of one of the supporting elements, the same being of slightly modified form and extendable.
Referring now to the figures, m represents a building wall having a window opening I l therein with a window frame structure l2 having vertical slidable window elements I3. To the frame structure l2 of the window opening and on the exterior side thereof, my extendable window laundry dryer [4 is attached.
The dryer as shown comprises two long spaced elements l5 and [6, which are pivotally attached respectively to attaching plates I! which are respectively connected to the upper part of the window frame structure and at the opposite sides thereof by attaching screws l8. In this manner the pieces 15 and [6 can be swung into and out of the window frame. The length of these supporting pieces 15 and I6 is substantially that of the window and as windows are generally 0f the same height regardless of their width, these pieces can be adapted for practically all windows as the only dimension which may have to be altered to adapt the device for different windows is that of the elements spacing the vertical supporting members or pieces 15 and I6.
Pivotally connected respectively to the lower ends of the supporting members l5 and I6, in the manner as indicated at l9, Fig. 2, are angle brackets 2| to which there is attached an adjustable transverse spacing structure 22. This structure is attached to the angle brackets 2| by a rivet 23. A pivot pin 24 connects respectively collapsible brace structures 25 and 26 respectively with the vertical supporting pieces 15 and I6 through the angle members 2|. Each of the collapsible braces comprises two parts 21 and 28 plvotally connected together by a pivot pin 29 and said part 2'! having a turned over lug 3| adapted for abutment with the upper edge of the part 21 to hold the parts straight and against downward collapse when they are extended with the vertical supporting members 15 and I6.
The ends of the parts 28 at their lower ends are inwardly offset, as indicated at 32, Fig. 4, and are pivotally connected by pivot pins 33 on the respective attaching plates 34. These ends are held spaced from the attaching plates 34 and on the pivot pins 33 by a spacing sleeve 35. The plate 34 is attached to the window frame structure I2 at the bottom thereof by attaching screws 36, Fig. 4. When the parts of the structure are folded inwardly, they will assume the positions shown in Fig. 5 and will be collected at the opposite sides of the window within spring retaining clip brackets 31.
The extendable transverse spacing structure 22 comprises adjustable parts 38 and 39. Within the part 38 there is an elongated slot 4| through which a clamping bolt 42 carried by the part 39 extends. This clamping bolt can be made tight by a wing nut 43 to fix the parts 38 and 39 against longitudinal displacement. Projections 44 on the part 38 extend over the edges of the part 39 to retain the parts against angular displacement relative to each other, Fig. 3.
On the parts 28 of the collapsible braces 25 and adjacent the lugs 3| thereof, there are respectively connected inwardly extending handles 45 which can be grasped by the housewife to effect the inward and outward adjustment of the dryer parts. This operation is readily effected from the interior of the building and can be easily managed therefrom. With the parts collapsed and drawn inwarly, they will lie as shown in Fig. fully within the window opening. Since the parts are disposed along. the sides of the window frame structure, they do not in any way interfere with the view from the. interior of the building. Since the parts may be made of parts of small transverse dimension and thin, they will not interfere with the movement of the window or with the placing of a storm window thereover. If the storm window is hinged at the top, the dryer may serve as a support for the window when the same has been extended.
For the purpose of supporting the clothes upon the parts, there are-provided a plurality of transversely extending clothes support elements, pref erably of the type as disclosed in Fig. 8 and as indicated' at 41, which are adjustable. However, if the width of the window frame structure is known, rigid and single piece clothes-supporting elements, as shown in Fig. 1, can be used. These removabl from the braces and the clothes can be strung upon them from the inside of the house and then hung with the clothes on the braces 25. The adjustable elements 47 are formed of separable parts 5] and 52 having respectively notches48. The part 5| has an elongated slot 53 into which extends supporting pins 54 and 55 of the part 52. These elements 41 can thus be adjusted to the different window size the different spacings of the collapsible braces 25. These clothes supporting elements are removable one at a time and will prevent the upward collapse of thebrace parts when inplace.
It should be apparent that there has been provided a window laundry dryer which is simple to operate, which consumes little, space and which may serve as a support for clothesand if the elements. 4'! are located in place, will support-large items not adapted to hanging. The transverse elements 4], when arranged on the collapsible braces, provide a grating to support various articles. The installation of the dryer can be effected easily by the mere insertion of eight screws through the pivot attaching plates 17 and 34 and four screws for the retaining clips 31. The actual opening and closing of the arrangement can be easily effected by grasping the handles 45 to move the structure in or out. The various parts are preferably made of metal and preferably of rust-resistant iron or aluminum that will not be effected by wet clothes. The clothes supporting elements are spaced close together in order to provide a large overall hanging space.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
