I It is an object of the present invention to provide in a loose leaf binder, cooperating coupling parts which are simple to construct and assemble and formed of a minimum number of pieces, and wherein ample ball contact is had with the terfitting post of one of the parts.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a loose leaf binder assembly which is easily handled, the cover parts easily placed about the loose sheets and wherein the disengagement of the binder parts is easily effected by a single pull of a ring and the release of a sleeve from a post on the other cover part.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, referenceimay be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which v Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the loose leaf binder showing the pull member being lifted in order to separate the binder parts and to make freethe loose leaf sheets.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the binder separated and illustrating the manner of connecting or disconnecting the loose leaf sheets from the other binder part.
Fig. 3 is an exploded and perspective view of the securing sleeve assembly and of the post over which this sleeve assembly is fitted.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary and still enlarged sectional View showing the spring compressed and the parts pulled to release the ball elements.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged view showing the engagement of the ball elements with the stud pin to secure the cover parts in their locked positions.
Referring now to the figures, I and I I represent respectively binder cover parts. The part III has a rigid upstanding flange I2 and a plurality of pins I3 extending upwardly and adjacent to the flange I2. Loose leaf sheets I4 having holes I are disposed on the pins I3. The sheets may have five holes extending along one edge of the same. A narrow plate I6 having projections I1 is fitted through the sheets I4 and the assembly of the sheets and plate can be fixed, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the projections I'I extend through other holes I5. The plate I6 has a large hole I8 intermediate its length for receiving a fastening sleeve assembly I9. The sheets may similarly be provided large enough to accommodate the sleeve assembly IS.
The binder cover part II has a rigid flange 2I that carries the sleeve assembly I9. With the cover flange 22 placed against the flange I2 of the cover part III, the sleeve assembly will be aligned with the opening I8 in the narrow plat'e I6 and adapted to be secured to the intermediate pin 1 3 on. the binder part Ill.
The pins I3 and I3 are made secured to the binder cover part III by peening over the securing end of the pin, in the manner as shown at 23, to bring the binder part against flange 24 on the pin. With the binder part being reinforced with a metal sheet, the pins I3 and I3 will be held rigidly andnormal to the face thereof. The pins I! are similarly secured. to the narrow plate I6, as indicated at 25.
The sleeve assembly I9 comprises an outer sleeve 21 which has a tapered internalo'pen'ing 28, as shown in exaggerated form in Fig. 5. The upper end of the sleeve 21 has a flange 29. The upper end of the sleeve is made secure upon the flange 2| of the cover part II by a slightly tapered plug part 3I having an axial opening extending therethrough and which is tight fitted intoth-e tapered opening 28 and extended through a hole in the flange part 2|. This part 3| has a hole therein through which is slidable an operating member 32 which has an enlarged hollow portion 33 for receiving the pin I3. A shoulder 34 is provided against which a spring 35 reacts to normally urge the operating member 32 forwardly so that its finger ring 36 engages the outer face of the plug part 3|. A finger can be extended through the ring to lift the operating member 32 against the action of spring 35 and to a position as shown in Fig. 5. The spring 35 will be compressed.
The lower end of the hollow portion 33 has a plurality of circumferentially spaced holes 3'! in which are retained small locking ball elements 38. These ballelements ride along the surface 28 and will engage with the surface of the projection or pin I3 to retain and lock the same against outward displacement from the hollow portion 33. With an outward pull of the projection I3, the balls will be rolled into tight gripping relationship therewith. By this means, the locking action of the pin with the sleeve assembly I9 is effected. To release the pin I3 and the balls 38 from their engagement therewith, the operating member 32 and the balls are drawn inwardly so that the balls may be made free.
The matter of removing sheets I4 from the book can be readily effected by a simple lifting of the ring 35, in the manner as shown in Fig. 1, and removing certain of the sheets with the narrow plate I6, in the manner as shown in Fig. 2. Com- 3 plete control is kept of all of the sheets and the sheet in particular which it is desired to have removed, can be readily removed without control being lost of any of the sheets. The sheets at all times will be kept on pins, whether the pins are in the part In or in the plate Hi.
It will be apparent that the assembly of the parts of the latch sleeve assembly l9 upon the binder cover part is effected in an easy manner and by a simple tight fitting of the plug 3| into the end of the sleeve 21 and'over the flange 29. The operating member 32 with the spring 35 and the balls 38 will have been assembled and extended through the opening in the plug 3] prior to the fixing of the plug in the end of the sleeve While various changes maybe made-in the detail construction, it shall be understoodthat such changes shall be within the spirit and scope ofthe defined by the appended present invention as claim.
What is claimed is: a l,
A loose leaf binder construction comprising binder cover parts having overlapping flanges, one of said parts having upstanding pin projections adapted to enter respectively opening ln the loose leaves, a narrow plate having pin projections extendabl in the opposite direction and adapted to enter respectively other openings in the loose leaves, said narrow plate having a large hole midway its length thereof, the other binder cover part having an inwardly extending flange adapted to overlie the narrow plate when the cover parts are brought together, a sleeve fastener, assembly rigidly fixed to the flange of the other binder cover part and adapted to extend through the large hole in the narrow plate and over one of the pins projecting upwardly from the one binder cover part, said sleeve assembly comprising a sleeve having an internal tapered opening and a top flange adapted for engagement with the underside of the binder cover part flange, a slightly tapered plug extending through 4 the inwardly extending flange of the other binding cover part and having a flange overlying the upper side of the other binder cover part flange and an axial opening extending therethrough, said plug tightly fitted in the flanged end of the, sleeve and the flanges of the sleeve and plug 00- operating with the other cover binder part flange to fix the sleeve fastener assembly to the other\ binder cover part flange, an operating member in said sleeve, and slidable through said plug axial opening said operating member having a hollow sleeve portion adapted to receive one of the pins of the one binder cover part and a shoulder portion, a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings in the lower end of said hollow sleeve portion, gripping balls lying respectively in the circum ferentially spaced holes and operable over the tapered internal surface of the sleeve, a spring surrounding the operating member and engaging REFERENCES CI E The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
