My invention relates to an improvement in combined crib and wardrobe wherein it is desired to provide an article of furniture which may be used to contain clothing or the like "and which may also conceal a babys crib.

Homes in which. no small children reside are seldom equipped with a crib which is instantly available for use. Such cribs are only used at intervals. As a result when the services of a crib v are required, considerable difi'iculty is usually 'involved in locating one and in erecting it for use by guests. This difficulty is particularly noticeable in tourist homes, .'hotels and the like where the presence of "guests is commonplace.

,It is the object of the present invention to provide an article of furniture which may serve the double capacity of a storage space for clothes and the like and alsoa storage space for a crib. When in enclosed position the crib is similar in appearance to a chest of drawers 'or a wardrobe of a conventional type. Howevenwhen desired the crib may be moved laterally to project to one side of the wardrobe in which position it may be .readily used.

v A feature of the present invention resides in the fact that the crib is 'slidably supported for movement out of the wardrobe in either direction therefrom. As a result my combined article of furniture may belocated in any desired position and the crib may be withdrawn therefrom from either side thereof.

A feature of the present invention resides in the fact that my wardrobe is provided with drawer space for use in storage of clothing and the like. I have found that a relatively small drawer space is usually suificient to serve the needs of'the usual guests. Therefore by taking up a part of the usual drawer space for the ac commodation of a crib, I am in reality not detracting materially from the effectiveness of the wardrobe.

v 1 Afeature ofthe present'inventioniresides in the provision of a cross member mounted above the crib near each side of the wardrobe.v The top of the crib engages against'this cross member when weight is placed within the crib, thereby permitting the crib to be maintained in a substantially horizontal position projecting from either side of the wardrobe.

The combined crib and. wardrobe A includes a substantially rectangular cabinet illustrated in general by the letter B anda slidable crib designated in general by the letter C. The crib :C may begenerally concealed within the wardrobe cabinet'B or may be moved to project from either side thereof as indicated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings. The cabinet B includes rectangularly arranged corner pillarsor posts, the'fron't postsbeing indicated by the numerals l0 and 1'],

A drawer frame is provided between the uppermost pair of frames described. This drawer frame includes a front member 42 between the legs l0 and II, a rear frame member 43 inwardly of the back panel 24 and

A drawer 53 is slidably supported upon the lowermost frame members 20, 2|, 22 and 23 and is slidable forwardly into open position in the manner illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. All of the

The crib C is constructed as is best illustrated in Figures 1 and 4 of the drawings. Each end of the crib includes a rectangular end frame 56 which is closed by means of an end closure panel 51. The rectagular frames 56 are connected by a pair of spaced top rails 59 and a pair of similarly spaced bottom rails 66. The rails 66 are designed to rest upon the guides or

34 and 35 which are closed so as to hold the rails 66 in proper position during transverse movement of the crib. A diagonally extending brace 61 extends across the bottom of the crib. A rectangular frame 62 rests upon this brace 6| and acts to support the crib mattress. The rectangular frame 62 is provided with spaced slats 63 on which the mattress may rest.

As best seen in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings spaced slats or bars 64 extend from the top frame members 59 to the corresponding bottom frame members 60. These slats 64 prevent the infant from rolling from the mattress while resting thereupon.

A lamp 65 is preferably provided on the cabinet top l4 near the rear edge thereof. A cord which is provided extends from this lamp, the end of this cord being normally wrapped about a cleat 66 on the rear panel 24. This cleat 66 permits the Wire to be properly supported during movement of the article of furniture and permits its ready portability.

The operation of my combined crib and wardrobe is believed obvious from the foregoing description. When the crib is not desired for use, it is normally contained within the wardrobe, the end panels 51 thereof being substantially aligned with the side panels of the wardrobe. Thus in appearance the combined crib and wardrobe is almost identical to that of that of a chest of drawers of common make. When a crib is required it is only necessary to pull the crib C from one side or the other of the cabinet B, a pull ring such as 6'! being provided on the end panels 51 for this purpose. When mostly withdrawn from the cabinet B the end frame 56 on one end of the crib engages beneath the cross member 55, this member acting as a bearing plate to hold the projecting end of the crib from tilting downwardly. Considerable weight may be placed in the crib without danger of having the crib become accidentally disengaged from its supporting cabinet.

For the purpose of "convenience I have described the member C as a crib which would indicate that it is solely for use as a bed for children. Actually the member C could also be used as a play pen for infants, the walls thereof serving to confine the infant to a relatively small area. In such an event the crib C may be entirely removed from the cabinet B if it is so desired and placed upon the floor or any other suitable support. I

The crib C is normally concealed from the floor of the cabinet B by the floor panel 69. This panel is equipped with decorative strips 16 dividing the panel into sections to conform with the appearance of the remainder of the cabinet. By thus dividing the panels 69 the front of the cabinet looks very much like a chest of drawers when the drawers are closed and the crib is in enclosed position.

In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of construction and operation of my combined crib, and wardrobe, and while I have endeavored to set forth the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that this is only illustrative thereof, and that obvious changes may be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

1. A combined crib and wardrobe comprising a substantially rectangular cabinet having an opening in each of two opposed sides, and a crib slidably supported by said cabinet and movable through either of said openings to project from either side of said cabinet, the ends of the crib forming closures for said openings when the crib is contained therein.

2. A combined crib and wardrobe comprising a rectangular cabinet, side panels on said cabinet, an open side wall portion adjacent each of said panels, a crib slidably supported by said cabinet, said crib having end panels substantially-aligned with saidside panels of said cabinet in closed position of said crib, and side panels on said crib connecting said crib end panels.

3. A combined crib and wardrobe comprising a substantially rectangular cabinet, side panels thereupon, frontand rear panels thereupon, said side panels being relatively small and providing side openings in said cabinet, a crib'mounted in said cabinet for lateral slidable movement, substantially parallel slatted sides on said crib nor,- mally concealed by said front and rear panels of said cabinet in closed position of the crib, and end panels on said crib normally aligned with said side panels in closed position of said crib.

,rearwardly in said cabinet, side wall panels enclosing the sides of said drawer, a front and rear panel on said cabinet, said side walls being open adjacent said front panel, an open toppedcrib laterally slidable in said cabinet, the drawer forming a top closure for the crib when "within said cabinet, and end wall panels on said crib normally substantially aligned with said side panels of said cabinet when said crib is in closed position.

5. A combined crib and wardrobe including a rectangular cabinet body, transverse guides therein, openings in each of two opposed sides of said crib, a crib slidably supported on said guides and projectable from either side of said cabinet, the ends of the crib forming closures for said openings when the crib is contained therein, and means in said cabinet body above the end of the crib retained within the cabinet body in projecting position thereof to support the crib as a cantilever.

6. A combined crib and wardrobe comprising a substantially rectangular cabinet having an 6 opening in each of two opposed sides, a crib slidably supported by said cabinet and movable through either of said openings to project from either side of said cabinet, the ends of the crib forming closures for said openings when the crib is contained therein, and means in the cabinet body supporting said crib as a cantilever in projecting position thereof.
