Rosenfeld, Cleveland Heights, Ohio; Sylvia Rsenfeld, -administratrix of said Edward M. .Rosenfeld, deceased, assignor to "Sylvia 'Rosenfeld pplicat n F uary 18, 1946, Serial No. 6481283 2 Claims. ,1 Thepresent invention relates generally to beds and 'more particularly to adjustable beds without the usual head and =foot portions for conversion into single, three-quarter ordouble beds.
Heretofore, adjustable beds have usually all been of a type having an upstanding head and foot portion. To provide 'for adjusting these *beds it is'necessary to lhavethe head and foot portions adjustable as well as the "bed frame, which supports the bed spring. In making the upstanding head and foot portions adjustable a complicated arrangement is necessary and this type of bed when thus made adjustable has been found to be very impractical due to these head and foot portions. \Accordingly, I have provided an adjustable bed of the so-called Hollywood type, a bed having only supporting legs, and a frame without the aforementioned upstanding head and foot ortions.
An object of my invention is to provide'a novel bed comprised of one standard set of elements which are all of the same size regardless of whether the bed when sold is to be single, threequarteror double.
Another object is to provides. novel bed of the so-called Hollywood type, which is easily adjusted to any widthspringor mattress.
Another object is to provide anovel bed adapted to be readily knocked down into several parts for convenient storage in a small closet or the like.
Still another object is to provide all rounded corners on the frame to thereby eliminate the sharp corners likely to cause injury to a person striking against them.
Further objects and advantages of my novel adjustable bed will be apparent from the following description of one embodiment of my invention, wherein the reference numerals refer to the several parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings by like numerals. stood, however, that the present description and drawings are for the purposes of illustration and are not intended to limit the scope of my invention, reference for this purpose should be had to the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my novel bed frame with springs and mattress removed.
Figure 2 is a view of one of the side rails of the frame with a section of one end rail attached.
Figure 3 is an isometric view of the second section of the adjustable end rails.
Figure 4 is an outside view partly in elevation It is to be under-' rails i! and 18. These rails l5, l6, are preferably made from angle iron material corners where they connect together. ample, as shown in Figure 3, each and rail l1 2 and'partly in section of one of the four corner brackets'wh i-ch carry the bed legs, and
Figure-5 is an inside view of the corner brackets. Referring in detail to the several figures of "the drawings and first with particular reference to Figure 1, there is illustrated one embodiment of "my inv'en'tion comprising a bed frame l ll, four supporting legs I'I, and'ifour corner brackets l2 havinginve'rted cup portions [3 within each of which is mounted ands'ecured'one of the legs H.
The'bedfra'me ID is of novel construction and comprises a pair of side rails l5 and [6 connected together at each end by a pair of extensible end I1 and i8 positioned so as to provide a land or flange 20 '"exteriorly bounded 'by'the -upstanding flange 2| of the angle iron to support a bed spring, not
shown. Each end of each side and end rail is so shaped and so formed-as to provide four round For exand I8, comprises two sections 22 and 23 having the land 20 cut back from the end of upstanding flange '2"i,which flange 12| is curved inwardly in 'a lip 24, so as to have its-end abut with the end 25 o'f'flan'ge 21 of an adjacent side rail l5 or I 6 and thus providei'a smooth rounded corner.
The rounded corners of the frame I'll when assembled are arranged to nest within the corner brackets I2. Each corner bracket I2, as shown in Figure 5, is provided with a horizontal supporting surface 30 from the rear of which extends vertically at substantially right angles a flange 3|. The bracket I2 is rounded with a curve 32 complementary to the rounded corner defined from the end lip 24 of the respective end rails l1 and I8 and the abutting end 25 of the respective side rails I5 and [6. These brackets are secured to the angle iron rails by the rivet 26 and the lock bolt 21, which both penetrate through the surface 30 as well as the ends of the frame rails.
At each corner the lands 20 of the side and end rail sections overlap and are thus pivoted on the rivet 26 with the bracket I2. In alignment with each rivet 26 are threaded openings through the lands 20 of the rails for receiving the lock bolt 21 to lock the rail members and bracket together and prevent any pivotal movement until the bolt 21 is removed.
The end rails l1 and I8 at each end of frame II] have their sections 22 and 23 lapped over each other, and the upper rail 22 is provided with round bolt receiving apertures 28, while the lower rail 23 is provided with longitudinal slots 29.
These apertures 28 and slots 29 are preferably three in number in each rail section and are arranged to be. selectively registered for adjusting the frame to any of three different standard widths. After such adjustment for size has been made bolts of suitable size are put through aligned apertures and slots to lock the sections together to the adjusted position. The slots 29 are of a predetermined length to allow for any slight difference in Width between bed springs.
When the bolts 21' are removed from the outer ends and the lapping inner ends of the sections 22 and 23 of each end rail 11 and [8 each of such sections may be pivoted around a rivet 26 and folded into side by side relation with the side rail to which it is connected by the rivet 26, for shipment or storage.
Though my invention relates more to a bed frame without a headboard or footboard, nevertheless, if desired, headboard and footboards for different sizes of beds may be purchased and secured to the frame on the head and foot of the same. For this purpose I have provided bolt holes 33 at each end of the frame 10, whereby a headboard and footboard, not shown, may be secured thereto if desired.
Thus I have provided a novel adjustable knockdown bed adapted to be sold as a standard product for use either as a single, three-quarter or double bed. Also this bed may be folded up and stored in a minimum amount of space so as to mak it practical for use in apartments or where there is not room for an extra bed to be set up at all times.
Although only one embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described in detail, it is to be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims by others skilled in the art, and accordingly to determine the scope of the invention reference should be had to the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a laterally adjustable-bed structure, an oblong. frame comprising two identical U-shaped longitudinal sections including side rails and end rail sections formed of angle iron of L-shaped cross-section, said end rail sections being. disposed in overlapping relation with each other and having the overlapping portions of the horizontal 4 flanges thereof provided with a plurality of equidistantly spaced openings, and securing means, such as bolts and the like, selectively engaged in said openings, the said end rail sections being made separate from said side rails and the outer ends of the horizontal flanges thereof being detachably secured to the underlying ends of the like flanges of the side rails, the outer ends of the vertical flanges of said end rail sections being curved into abutting relation with respect to the adjacent ends of the like flanges of the side rails. 2. In a laterally adjustable bed structure, an oblong frame comprising two identical U-shaped longitudinal sections including side rails and end rail sections formed of angle iron of L-shaped cross-section, said end rail sections being disposed in overlapping relation with each other and having the overlapping portions of the horizontal flanges thereof provided with a plurality of equidistantly spaced openings, and securing means, such as bolts and the like, selectively engaged in said openings, the corners of said frame sections being rounded, angled leg supporting brackets, also formed of angle iron of L-shaped cross-section, engaged about the outer sides of said corners with th horizontal flanges thereof underlying the same, and means, in the form of bolts and the like, for securing the ends of the vertical flanges of said brackets to the like flanges of said side rails and end rail sections of the frame.
