COMBINATION PEPPER AND SALT SHAKER WITH TWO PIECE BOTTOM CLOSURE Filed Aug. 9, 1949 Fun.
- JNVENTOR,
MICHAEL E. VARGA.
Patented Sept. 11, 1951 COMBINATION PEPPER-AND-SALT SHAKER WYITH TWO-PIECE BOTTOM CLOSURE Michael E. Varga, Baltimore, Md., assignor of forty-five per cent to Edward F. Hyatt, Shelbyville, Tenn.
Application August 9, 1949, Serial No. 109,378
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a combination pepper and salt shaker.
An object of the invention is the construction of a simple and eflicient shaker which is to contain salt and pepper, and which device can be easily assembled after the compartments have been filled.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a shaker which is provided with a unique stopper, which stopper is contained within the base and container and closes the filling end of the compartments of the shaker.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a shaker constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a. view in side elevation at right angles to the position of the shaker shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view in elevation of the opposite side of the shaker from that shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a vertical, central, sectional view of the shaker, taken through the partition thereof.
Figure 5 is a vertical, central, sectional view. taken at right angles to the position shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a horizontal, sectional view, taken on line 6-6, Fig. 5, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 7 is a horizontaLsectional view, taken on line 'l--l, Fig. 5, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 8 is a bottom plan view.
Figure 9 is a view, partly in section and partly in perspective of the stopper.
Referring to the drawings in which the preferred embodiment of this invention is illustrated, I designates the container which has near its bottom an annularly extending flange 2, and under said flange the container is exteriorly threaded. In the container l is a vertical par tition 3. The partition 3 divides the container into two compartments 4. These compartments are adapted to contain the pepper and salt. Each compartment is beveled at 5 so that when the shaker is turned to a substantially horizontal position for discharging the contents of one of the compartments 4, the contents of the other compartment will be prevented from discharging, unless the shaker is turned to an entirely inverted position.
A base 6 is provided with a large pocket I, which is to receive the lower threaded end of the container l and the stopper 8, Fig. 5. The container 1 is screwed into the base, with the annular flange 2 resting on top of the base 6.
The container is provided with two strengthening ribs 9. On one of these ribs 9 is exposed the word Salt and on the other rib is exposed the word Pepper.
The stopper 8 comprises a disc body So which has a transverse groove I0 formed in its upper face, this groove in receiving the outer end of partition 3. The body 9a. is provided with an integral depending stem H; stem H is at right angles to the groove l0, strengthening the body 9a, and insuring long life to the stopper. In the base 6 is a vent aperture l2, which keeps the space between the base and the stopper dry, thereby assisting in separating the devices when the operator wishes to disassemble the shaker, for filling purposes or for cleansing.
The base 6 is provided with an annular groove l3 in its bottom face, which assists in preventing the shaker from sticking to a surface upon which it may be resting.
The stopper 8 is of great importance because it closes the bottom of the salt and pepper compartments, thereby preventing the ingredients from mixing. 'It also supports the inner end of the partition, while its stem H reinforces the whole body of the stopper, and furnishes a grip for the inspection of the device, and also facilitates the removal of the stopper when the compartments are to be filled with the ingredients.
The large pocket I is provided at its center with a dished socket Ia, which receives the comparatively flat, elongated stem H, as shown.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention and illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates during the extensive manufacture of the same, and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such changes or alterations as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In a device of the class described, the combination of a container open at its bottom and provided with a vertical partition, said partition producing two compartments in said container, a base threaded onto the open end of said container, said container provided with an annular flange against the inner face of said base, said base provided with a large pocket and with a dished socket in said pocket, said base MICHAEL 'E. VARGA.
