LAMP STRUCTURE WITH SHADE AND BASE INTERLOCKING MEMBER Filed July 17, 1950 Fig. Fig 2 l-lendrll'lrs INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 11, 1951 LAMP STRUCTURE WlrrH SHADE AND BASE INTERLOCKING MEMBEIt I Frank R. Hendricks, Puyallup, Wash.,,assignor tov Raymond Parker, Tacoma, Wash.
Application July 17, 1950, Serial No. 174,330
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in lamps, more particularly, lamps consisting of a base carrying a shade and a bulb socket within the shade, the principal object of the invention being to provide very simple and highly efiicient means for attaching the shade to the base.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple but very pleasing shade itself which, by virtue of its construction, is particularly adapted for attachment to the base as aforesaid.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its pleasing appearance, in its durability, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the construction and arrangement of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the invention, partially broken away so as to reveal its construction;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof, also partially broken away;
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the same;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 1; and I Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 5--5 in Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention is embodied in a lamp which is designated generally by the reference character It) and consists of an elongated base member l2 which is hollow as shown and is provided at the opposite ends thereof with a pair of suitable caps 14.
The base member 12 includes a front wall [6 which is bent along longitudinally extending fold lines so as to provide a pair of laterally projecting flanges I8, while longitudinal edge portions of the rear wall of the base member are turned inwardly upon the flanges l8, as indicated at 22 in Figure 5.
A reinforcing member 24 of a U-shaped cross section may be positioned longitudinally between the front and rear walls I6, 20 of the base member I2, the intermediate portion 26 of the reinforcing member 24 contacting the inner surface of the front wall l6, as shown.
a Qlaims. (01. 240-49 The shade of the lamp is designated generally by the reference character 28 and consists of a plurality of bands 30, 32, 34 which are curved to various diameters as shown in Figure 3 and are disposed in overlapped relation as is best shown in Figure 2, so that spaces exist between the overlapped longitudinal edge portions of the bands, as shown.
The end portions of each of the bands 30, 32, 34, are disposed in abutment on the outer surface of the outer wall or front wall [6 of the base member I2 and are provided with openings 36 which are in register with additional openings or apertures 38, 40 provided in the front wall l6 and in the intermediate portion 26 of the reinforcing member 24.
A fiat keeper strap 42 extends longitudinally in the shade 28 on the abutting end portions of the bands 30, 32, 34, and a plurality of bendable tongues 44 are struck out from this strap and extend through the registering openings and apertures 36, 38, 40, as is best shown in Figures 4 and 5. The inner end portions of the tongues 44 are angulated against the inner surface of the front wall I 6, whereby the strap 42 as well as the entire shade 28 are firmly secured to the base member l2.
One end portion of the strap 42 is angulated as at 46 to extend into the shade and carry a bulb socket 48 to which a supply of current is delivered by a conductor 50.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
1. In a lamp structure, the combination of an elongated base member provided with a longitudinally extending row of apertures, a set of bands extending transversely of said base member and constituting a shade, said bands being provided with openings in register with the respective apertures, and a strap disposed in said shade and extending longitudinally of said base member, said strap having a plurality of keeper tongues struck out therefrom, said tongues extending through the respective registering openings and apertures and having angulated free end portions whereby to secure said bands and said strap to said base member.
2. The device as defined in claim 1 together with a lamp socket mounted at one end of said strap and disposed in said shade.
3. In a la'tiip structiiref the combination-01: am elongated and hollowbase member'having a frontwall provided with two longitudinally extending rows of apertures, a shade comprising a set 0! bands having spaced overlapped longitudinaledge portions and extending transversely of said base' member, each of said bands having opposed end portions in engagement with th'e' oiiter'fstirlace' of said front wall and provided with o eningsirrreg ister with the respective apertures in the two rows, and a strap extending longitudinally in said shade and covering end portions of saidbarid's'; said strap having pairs of transversely spaced keeper tongues struck out therefrom, said tongues extending through said openings and apertures into said base member and having inner end portions angulated against the inner surface of said 5 front wall, whereby to secure said bands and said strap to said base member.
