Description

K.-E. BELAU SPATTER GUARD Aug. 28, 1951 Filed May 15, 1947 INVENTORI. KENNETH E. BELAU BY 6 7 Patented Aug. 28, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,565,905 SPATTER GUARD Kenneth E. Belau, Milwaukee, Wis. Application May 13, 1947, Serial No. 747,712
1 Claim. 1
My invention relates to guards and more particularly to spatter guards, such as might be employed to protect a wall or the like from the spattering of food in the process of being prepared on the burner arrangement of a kitchen range.
The object of my invention is to provide a means of supporting a flat sheet in a vertical manner, that will permit its being raised or lowered to provide the necessary protection for which it is intended.
Another object of my invention is to provide such a device that may be supported from the floor.
Still another object of my invention is to so construct a device as to provide retaining means that will, by frictional contact, support the fiat sheet acting as a guard, and allow it to be placed at any pre-determined height.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a, device that will function equally well, whether used as a portable fixture or constructed as an accessory to be furnished as part of the range or stove.
Other and further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds when taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device illustrating the manner employed when supporting it from the floor.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of an end portion of the device illustrating a type of adjustable mounting employed when supporting the device from a point between the range and the wall.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of the inside of one of the channels illustrating a method of supporting the vertical guard frictionally within the channel.
Figure 4 is a. side view of the device as illustrated in Figure 2 supported by means of the stove and the wall.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view of a channel and slide arrangement, and
Figure 6 is a modified form of channel and slide arrangement.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and referring now to the same, the character III, as shown in Figure 1, shows a fiat sheet acting as a vertical spatter guard and having a hinged member I I attach-ed to its upper end. The sheet I0 and the member I I are arranged to slidably engage the vertical channels I2 and I2 which are supported by bracing strips I3 and pedestals I4 and I4. The member II, when brought into vertical alignment with the sheet I0, will fit into the channels I2 and I2 and may be raised and lowered to a predetermined height within the channels I2 and I2 and retained in position by means of set screws I5.
In Figure 2, I show the upper end I6 of the sheet l0 radially disposed in a resilient manner, and, when the sheet I0 is lowered into the channels I2 and I2, it assumes a straight vertical position in the channels.
The means of supporting the structure is shown in a modified form in Figures 2 and 4, and consists of two members I! and I I telescopically engaging one another. The member I! obviously is attached to the channel I2 and, as the two members I I and II are spread' apart, the flat face sections I8 frictionally engage the surface provided by the back of the range l9 and the wall 20, as shown in Figure'4. I do, however, show apertures 2I within the flat face III of the members I1 and I1, through which screws, nails or bolts may be inserted when attaching the members to the face I9 of the range or the wall 20. I also show set screws 22, which may be employed when frictional contact of the face I8 is employed, and which will keep the members I7 and II in a spread position. This type of support eliminates the floor standards I4 and I4 as shown in Figure 1.
In Figure 3, I show the guard I0 inserted into the channel members I2 and I2 and held in frictional contact therewith by means of resilient leaf spring members 23. Using this type of construction will eliminate the conventional set screws I5 on the channel member I 2.
It is manifest to anyone familiar with the art that the channel construction may be varied, and I show modified variations in Figures 5 and 6.
In the chosen embodiments of my invention, there are present many features not heretofore disclosed in the prior art. I fully realize that even though I have shown a specific manner of using the features in the construction of the device, that there are many changes in the form and configuration of these features that can be made, and I reserve the right to make such changes as I deem necessary and describe without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appendant claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
A portable arrangement of the character described comprising, a vertical main sheet, said sheet provided with an auxiliary sheet hingedly attached thereto, a pair of vertical channels, said channels arranged in a manner to slidably receive said main and auxiliary sheet, means in said channel for engaging said guard and a pedestal attached to the bottom of each said channels for supporting the entire assembly.
KENNETH E. BELAU.
