It is obvious that by removing the chine- I hoops the heads may be taken out and inserted without disturbing the outside rating or deranging the stares.

Having thus described my invention, I do not confine myself to the peculiar manner of attaching thc bands C to the staves or series of stares, as the groove E may be dispensed with and the band attached to the surface ot' the stavcs. Neither do I coniine myself to the peculiar device for locltingtheend of the hoops F together, as they may be attached with riveis, which rivets may be permanently secured to one end ofthe hoops and temporarily locked to the other end in a slotted ey elet like that hoop or sepa- Acommonly employed in a corset or beltv clasp. rlhey may a so be locked by the device shown atll.

' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters lPatent, is-Y l. In that class ot' barrels which are adapted to be taken apart for shipping, the combination, in a single series, of two or more staves, retaining-bands .secured to the exterior of said series, and a series of staples looped over said retaining-bands and permanently secured to i the exterior surface ofthe staves, all adapted 'to retain said stares in their proper relative position to each other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.1

2. The combination of two or more series of stares, the stavcs of each series being connected together by separate retaining-bands attached with staples to the exterior surface of said series, elastic packing y between the edges of the respective sections, heads K and hoops F, and end fastenings for the retainingbands, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. 1n barrels the stares of which are oonnected together in two or' more sections, the retaining-bands U C, each provided with knobs w at one end and ineens for securing the other end, groovesEEormedin the exterior surface of thestave for the reception of the retainingd bands C, and staples D, for retainingl said 'eend in said groove, snbstaotiallyas and for the pnrpose set forth.
