B. C. HOYT, OF PORT WASHINGTON, WISCONSIN.
VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,648, dated October 4, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, B. C. HoYT, of Port lVashington, in the county of Ozankee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vegetable-Outters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure '1, represents a perspective view of the machine showing the box in two positions. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal middle section through the cutting box, slide, and lever.
The nature of my invention consists in pivoting a lever or frame to a standard fixed to a bench or any suitable stand, upon the top of which lever is fixed an angular box of either metal or wood provided with longitudinal slots extending from end to end under which the articles to be cut are placed, and in operating a slide which is immediately under this box, armed with vertical knives passing up through the slots in said box, by means of a jointed arm spring and the lever upon which the box itself is fixed so as to give to the knives a reciprocating motion, and a draw out upon the inclined edges of the box as hereinafter described.
The cutter about to be described is intended for cutting all kinds of vegetables to be sliced, and also dried meat if necessary, the operation in either case being the same.
A, represents a bench or stand, mounted upon legs, and on one end of this bench is fixed two inclined standards B, B, between which are pivoted and work lever C, and arm D. On the opposite end of the bench A, is fixed one end of a straight spring E, to
give it a proper sweep, and presses upon the under side of arm D, keeping this arm in position to operate the knives as hereinafter shown.
The lever C, is considerably widened near about the center, and has two sides G, G, fixed on each side of it between which is a sliding piece H, resting upon the top surface of the lever and upon which are the vertical two-edged knives J, J, placed side by side and as near each other as may be found necessary. These knives proceed up from the slide H, and pass through slots in an angular lid or box K, which is hinged at a, to either side of the portions G, G, so that one end can be raised for supplying it with vegetables and for discharging the same. The two sides of the box inside and outside are inclined so that as the knives are moved back and forth they perform a draw out upon the edges of each slot and thus facilitate the cutting. This lid K, is provided with a handle 6, for raising it; and is held down by pins 0, c, which pass through the sides of the box.
The end of the lever C, forms a handle L, for operating the machine; and the slide H, being pivoted to the arm D, underneath the box, gives it a reciprocating motion as the handle L, is raised and depressed; the spring E, serving to return the parts back to their original posit-ion after the lever has been depressed.
In using this machine the articles to be out are placed under the lid and it secured down in place, the lever is then depressed and when the knives have performed one cut the articles being closely confined in the box, it is then raised when the knives again cut and so on until the operation is complete; the lid is then raised and by a downward motion of the lever they are discharged.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of the cutting box upon a vibrating lever C, when the lever is supported by a spring E, actuating arm D, for keeping the whole in an elevated position as herein above set forth.
2. I also claim the combination of slide H, angular slotted box K, and vertical cutters J, arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
B. C. HOYT.
