REMOVABLE PIPE-SECTION FOR TANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,349, dated April 11, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES G. ll/IAYER, of Nauvoo, Hancock county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Removable Pipe Sections for Tanks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to the tank cooling apparatus wherein ammonia-pipes are employed for cooling the brine or other liquid in the tank.
My invention consists in making the ammonia-pipe in removable sections, as hereinafter set forth.

Fig. 2 is an end elevation of one of the sections, and Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the same. Fig. t is a front elevation of one the sections to the openings through the tank and stuffing-boxes. -Fig. 5'is a section through one of the stuffing-boxes, showing the device for stopping the opening therein to prevent the liquid in the tank from escaping when the protruding end of the section is withdrawn to remove the section from the tank.

Fig. 2 illustrates the construction of the frames 0, which consists of uprights c, in the lower ends of-which the rollers D are journaled, and cross bolts or rods 0, which support the pipe. I have shown two of these supporting-frames to a section but there may be more, according to the size of the tank.
It will thus be seen that should it become necessary to take out any one of the sections from the main pipes E F by right and left couplings e f, and removed from the tank by first moving it back in the tank on its rollers until the protruding end I) is within the tank, and then raising it by means of a hoisting device. When the section has been repaired and 1 is ready for Work it is lowered into the tank, I
' and the end b is directed to the opening through the stuffing-box G by means of guide-planks H H, secured to the side of the tank by brackets h. The lower ends of the planks are connected together by a strap or casting, H, which directs the end I) vertically into the stuffing-box opening. When the section has been lowered it is moved forward on its rollers until the end b protrudes through the stuffingfare in short lengths of pipes extending from the main pipes toward the tank. In these short lengths-of pipe are valves or cocks 6'), for regulating the flow of ammonia through the pipes or for closing all communication between a section to be removed and the main pipes. In removing a section, as the end I) is withdrawn from, the stuffing-box it will of course be necessary to close the opening to prevent the escape of liquid. This is done by a conical pointed plug, 1, made to fit the opening. As theend b is withdrawn the plug follows it up, closing the opening in the box. The stem '5 of the plug is screw-threaded, and its outer end is formed to receive a wrench.
J is a short plug, through which the stem i screws, and which is itself screwed into the stuffing-box. It will thus be seen that the plug I can be forced in under screw-power to insure a tight fit. v I
I have described my invention as applied to cooling-tanks'; but it is evident that it may be used for heating-tanks, &c.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with the tank A, the removable section B, supported on frames 0 on rollers D, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with tank A and removable section B, the guide H, secured to the side of the tank, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth. 7
3. In combination with tank A and removable'section B and stuffing-box G, the plug I, arranged to close the opening in the box, for the purpose set forth.
