Patented Aug. 7, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. (CL 277-31) This invention relates to valve structures, and
particularly to the -type wherein a closure is effected by the engagement of two complementary conical members.
A common type of valve of the category abovementioned employs a movable valve member with an outer conical surface engageable with a correspondingly proportioned conical valve seat. Such valves are intended to provide an extended closure surface in contradistinction to the type of valve in which the closure is effected by a relatively thin circumferential engaging surface. In such conventional structures, it is generally found expedient to employ a spring arrangement for yieldably holding the two conical surfaces into pressing engagement. This is generally accomplished by attaching a spring to the base of the male valve member, the spring extending downwardly through the underlying female cavity for anchorage therebelow. With such an arrangement it is deemed inadvisable to permit the flow of water to proceed from below the female cavity upwardly because of the obstructing spring arrangement and its anchorage; and it is hence necessary to limit such conventional devices to arrangements where the water inlet is positioned above the female valve seat.
It is within the contemplation of my invention to provide a valve structure in which coacting male and female conical valve members are employed, and yet which will permit a flow of inlet water centrally through the female valve seat, and which will also obviate the use of the spring arrangements, above-mentioned.
And it is a further object of my invention to provide, in a valve structure of the above catagory, means for maintaining the coacting com,- plementary valve members in firm pressing engagement, whereby a secure valve closure is effected.
Still another of my objectives is to provide two coacting conical valve members wherein one member is rotatable with respect to the other,
^ and where there is a minimum of frictional engagement therebetween. And in this aspect of my invention it is an object to provide a fioating arrangement whereby there is no contact between the base portions of said two coacting members during an operative rotation of one with respect tothe other.
A further object of my invention is to provide relatively simple means for limiting the operative rotational movement of one of said coacting valve members with respect to the other.
Still a further object of my invention is to provide means for selectively setting an auxiliary valve to determine the desired rate of iiow without actuating the main valve.' And in this aspect of my invention it is an important object to enable such flow regulation to be manually effectuated while the main operating valve is in its vclosed condition.
Other objects, features and advantages will appear from the drawings and the description hereinafter given.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view, partly in elevation, of a preferred form of my invention, the valve being shown in closed position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view like Figure 1, the valve being shown in open position.
Figure 3 is a view substantially like Figure 1, but in open position, and with the auxiliary valve in an unobstructing position and the auxiliary regulating handle in raised unlocked position.

In the preferred form of my invention illustrated in the drawings, the device is arranged with an upper hand manipulatable portion generally designated as I0 disposed above the sink oor II, the body portion I2 of the valve being shown below the said floor.
The casing I 3 has a bottom inlet pipe extension `HI internally threaded to receive therein an inlet supply pipe (not shown). Disposed within the casing I3 is the male conical valve member I5 containing an annular base flange II resting upon the bottom shoulder I8 of the casing, and having an externally threaded base extension I9 in threaded engagement with the casing extension I4. Valve member I6 contains an axial bore 20, the lower portion 2| thereof constituting an outlet passage communicating with the two diametrically opposed radial outlet passages 22 and 23. The upper portion 24 of the bore 20 is threaded along a portion thereof for operatively accommodating the auxiliary valve 2'5 to be hereinafter referred to.
Rotatably disposed over male Valve member I6 r is the female conical valve member '26, the internal conical surface 21 of which is proportioned to t the outer surface '28 of member IB. Member 26 also contains in its lateral wall the two diametrically opposite outlet apertures 29 and 30 adapted for registry with the said outlet passages 22 and 23 when valve 2B is in its predetermined open position.
Connected with valve 26 is the hollow main valve stern 3 l, the upper portion 32 being splined to receive thereover the internally splined inner boss 33 integral with the main handle member 34 containing an apron 35 and finger-engaging extension 36, the apron overlapping the ring 3l threaded on to the upper portion of casing I3. The top of handle member 34 contains the internally threaded recess 38 within which is dis` y posed the flanged bushing 39 the downwardly ci@ tending boss 40 of which is in threaded engagement with the upper inner wall 4l of the main valve stem 3l. The flange 42 of the bushing, which rests on the floor of recess 38, containsV a plurality of intersecting diametral recesses 43 adapted for interlocking engagement with the,v rib 44 of the regulating handle 45, saidrib being dispose-d on the underside of the anged base 45 positioned within recess 38 and underlying the retainer ring 4l in threaded engagement with the lateral wall oi recess 38.
Handle 45 contains an axial recess 418 of polyga onal cross-section into which extends the correspondingly shaped upper end '49 of the auxillary valve stern 50 carrying said auxiliary valve 25, said valve stem 5U extending through the central aperture 5 1, of the bushing 4G.
Packing 52 is disposed upon the upper shoulder 53 of thel female valve 2G., the packing ring 54, in, threaded engagement with casing i3, being inl pressing engagement with the packing., The male valve I'B contains at the upper portion there oi the cavity 55 accommodating therein the packing 5t between the lower ring El andthe upper ring 58 in threaded engagement with the lateral wall of. cavityl 55.
The said base flange il is notched along a Dortion of ,its periphery; and in the particular em bodiment of my invention illustrated, the nange contains the peripheral notched portion 59 extending along one-half of the circumference of the flange, thereby presenting two opposite stop walls. BQ and 6l. Extending downwardly from the bottom of female valve member 26 is the peripheral lug 62 engageable with the stop walls 6,3 and 6i upon an operative rotation of said member 2E. In the embodiment illustrated, lug 62, is approximately one-quarter of the. circumference of the bottom of member 25, so that the walls 63 and 64 of the lug will engage the stop walls lEll and lil, respectively, upon quarter turns of valve member 26.. As indicated in Figure 1, whenwalls 60 and 63 are in engagement, the passages 2 2 and 23 are in operative registry with the apertures 23 and 3,0, respectively, and accordingly when walls El and 64 are in engagement, the valve is closed.
It is most important to note that the coasting valve members I6 and Z6 are so proportioned that the lower edges 65 and 65 are spaced above and are never in engagement with the upper edges G1 and E8 of the base flange ll' of the male valve member lli. This floating arrangement of the female valve permits extensive engagement thereof with the male valve; yet it prevents a frictional engagement and grinding of the said upper and lower edges of the valve members I6v and 26. However, despite the avoidance of contact be tween said upper and lower edges, there nevertheless is positive operative contact between the lug S2 and the stop walls til and Bl of the base flange Il.
In the operation of this device, the vauxiliary valve 25 must rst be set for the desired flow. Auxiliary handle 45 is raised until base 4B engages the retaining member 41, thereby removing the rib 44 from its locking engagement with an underlying grooved portion 43 (see `Figure 3). Handle 45 is now free to turn, and a regulating turning movement thereof will cause stem 50 to rotate, to raise or lower auxiliary valve 25 with respect to the outlet passages 22 and 23. Thus, if a relatively small flow is required, the valve 25 is adjustably moved into obstructing relation to passages 22 and 23, as shown in Figure 1. If a greater ow is required, the valve 25 is operatively raised `above said passages, for example, to the position shown in Figure 3. In either event, when the passages 22 and 23 are in registry with apertures 219 and. 36, the flow will be up through passageway 2l, out through passages 22 and 23, and from apertures 29 and 30 out through outlet pipe l0.
Once the adjustment of valve 25 has been effected, and the handle 45 permitted to drop into interlocking engagement with base 42, the setting will remain undisturbed until a new adjustment is made. Whenever water is required, all that need be done is to rotate main handle 34 to bring the outer female valve member 26 into open engagement with valve member t6, and water at the desired flow rate will enter pipe l0. And obviously, if two such units were to be combinatively employed, one for hot water and the other for cold water, a predetermined temperature of the resulting mixture can readily be effected` It should be further noted that 'since Vthe packing 52 is in constant yieldable engagement with valve member 26, a, firm operable engagement is effected between the two coasting surfaces of said members I6 and 2t; This 'arrangement eliminates the use of the complicated conventional spring mechanisms generally employed at the base of the casing to pull an upper male cone valve downwardly into an underlying coni'- cal seat, thereby also preventing theentryof water through the base of the casing.
In the above description, the invention has been disclosed merely by way of example and in preferred manner; but obviously many varia.- tions and modifications may be made therein which will still be comprised within its spirit. It is to be understood, therefore, that the invention is not limited to any specific form or manner of practicing same, except insofar as such limitations are specified Vin the appended claim.
I claim:
In a valve structure, a casing, an inlet portion therein, a centrally apertured conicalmale valve member secured to the casing at said'lnlet portion, the outer lateral surface of the member tapering inwardly and upwardly away from` said inlet portion, a conical female member with an inner tapered surface disposed over and in rotat.- able engagement with said male member, said female member being Vrotatable between two limiting positions, one being a predetermined open position and the other a predetermined closed position, an outlet aperture in the lateral wall of said female member., a passageway in said male. member communicating between the central aperture therein and the said outlet aperture when the female member is in its said open position, and retaining means holding said female member in engagement with the male member, whereby the said female member is maintained against longitudinal displacement; further provided with a hollow main valve stem fixedly connected to the female member, a main handle member fixedly secured to the said main valve stem, an auxiliary valve disposed within and in threaded engagement With the central aperture in the male Valve member, whereby upon an operative rotation of the auxiliary Valve it will move longitudinally relative to the said passageway in the male member, an auxiliary valve stem connected to the auxiliary valve and extending through the said main valve stem,
and a handle connected to the auxiliary valve stem for regulating the position of the auxiliary valve.
