The invention relates to vises for home, shop, and other uses, andmore particularly :tothat type of vise in which the movable jaw has afree move-.- ment for rapid adjustment, is thereafter locked against such.movement,. and then moved into tight clamping engagement with the work.
The object of the present inventionis toproe vide a simplestrong, and long-lived mechanism for effecting the setting or locking of the freely movable jaw and its movement intotight clamping engagement with the work. More particularly, a cam leverlocking device is associated with the freely movable jaw and is operate. and controlled by. an eccentric or cam on a manually oscillatory shaft.
A further object of the. present invention is to provide a vise having a collar freely slidably mountedon a part of the movable jaw and carry: ing a cam lever lock, one arm of, which is. op.- eratively engaged with an operating eccentric and spring means for holding said lever at all times in operative engagement with said eccentric and thus take up any wear thatmay oc-. curlin the operating parts of the device.
The invention further consists inthe several features hereinafter described and :more particu larly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof. -.In the drawings; l

Referring to the drawi gs, the numeral 8 desig hates the fixed jaw and 9 the movable jaw of my vise. j i The fixed jaw 8 forms a supporting frame and as shown has a base portion I0 for mounting on a support II to which it is clamped by a hand clamping screw 12 though the base may. also be. of the swivel type in. which the. jaw 8 may. ous positions relative. The frame of the jaw 8 has spaced vertically disposed walls I3 and J4 proturned and locked. in var to a fixed base.
vided with alined sets of bores 15. j
The movable jaw, 9 has spaced round steel bars;
l6 fixedly anchored thereto and freelyslidably mounted inthe upper. and lower bores 15.. Both- Jews have hardened steel. clamping. faces [1. Ex.-
' fiClaims. (01. 81-26) treme outward movement of the jaw 9 is limited by a stop collar I8 secured to one of the bars I6 by a screw I9.
A hardened steel collar 20 has a diameter providing a close sliding fit with the upper bar l6, so that said bar will slide freely relative thereto and without any cooking action of the collar relative to the bar, said collar having eared' ex.- tensions 2! in which is mounted a pivot pin 22 and having a slot 23 extending upwardly from its bottom and of less width than the diameter of the bar 16.
A lock lever 24 of hardened steel is mounted to swing freely about the pivot formed by the pin 22 and hasa camlocking surface 25, which surface is of rounded contour incross section with aradius substantially that of the bar l6 as shown at 26 and whose lengthwise curvature is on a radius whose center is eccentrically disposed relative to the center of thelever, so that as the lever is swung slightly from the position shown in Fig. 5 where it is free of the bar, it will first move into a locked wedging engagement with said bar, as shown in Fig. 6, and then move with said bar as shown in Fig. 7.
For moving the lever 24, it is provided with a release lever arm 21 and a lockinglever arm 28; said arms cooperating with an eccentric or cam 29 on a rotatable or oscillatory shaft 30 extend-.
ing transversely through the frame of the fixed jaw B. A part of the eccentric 29 is provided with a flat or clearance or relief surface 3|, and the arm 21 may also have a clearance notch 32 formed therein.
The shaft 30 is provided with an exteriorly disposed operating lever handle 33 whose extreme release position may be limited or determined by a stop in the form of a .set screw 34 mounted in the wall l3 and engageable with a part of the eccentric. as shown in Fig. 1. a
For holding the lever 24 in constant operative relation with the eccentric 29 and forassisting in the movement of the jaw 9 to a release position, a spring 35 is interposed between the front end of the collar 20 and the frame of the vise and is here shown as passing loosely through a. bore 36 in the wall 14 and clamped in operative position by a back plate 31 and a screw 38.
With the above arrangement when the handle, 33 is in the fullline positionvthe parts are. in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 5, under which.
conditions the movable jaw 9 may be slid freely toward or away from the fixed jaw 8, the bar l6 sliding freely through the collar 20 and the surface 25 being out .of engagement with said bar.
Thus the jaw 9 may be moved freely into engagement with the work W, as shown in Fig. 1. Then as the lever or handle 33 is moved from its full line position to the first dotted line position to the right as-indicated in. Fig- 1, h
eccentric 29. is turned clockwise. thus bringing as indicated in Fig. 1, the further increase of the l radius of the eccentric 29 causes it to move the lever 24 and consequently the partslocked to it to the right including the collar 20, bars l6;,, and jaw 83 until. the; work W is: clamped so tightly as. to. resist. zfurthersqueezing action of the jaws upon it. This last movementpf the jaw 8.; increases the tensionuoi the spring 35, so
that on. the, reversemovement oi the lever 33 this increased'tension will be expended in tend.- ing to move. the collar 28., bar l6, and jaw 8 to. the left to. move the. jaw 8 to. a release position, it being also noted that as. the eccentric 29 rotates to a releaseposition, it engages the. arm 21 as show-11in Fig. to tip the lever 24 out of locking engagement with the bar 16. The spring.
also inconstantly urging the collar 26 toward the left together with the lever 24 into contact with the eccentrloi 9. takes. upany wear that may develop. between the/operatingshaft, 39 and the lever 24, and saidlever 2.4, and, the bar I6, and also, assists inholdingthe. leverhandle 34 in itsv upper full line position.
It will also be. noted that while the cam. surface. 25. tightly engagesthebar, there are no sharpsurfaces-toqin any way out into. and roughen the. surfaceof the bar It, so. that it will always. slide freely relative to the collar Zil'inthe unlocked position of the vise; r
Idesire itto. be. understood that this invention is not; to; .be limitedto any particular form. or arrangement-"of parts:..excep,t.in so, far assuch.
limitations are included'in the: claims.
