6 Claims. (Cl. 2995-128) This invention relates to an improvement in spray nozzle assemblies, andspecifically to means for morev accurately and uniformly seating the terminal member in the tip of. the nozzle. I
One of the objects of his invention is the provision of means. for more perfectly seating the terminal member accurately with relation to the rear of the orifice in. the tip when securing. the terminal member in the tip by means of a securing nut or member.
Another object of my invention is the provision of means between the terminalmember and securing nut or member, which will permit perfect centering of the terminal member with respect to, the angular seat in the tip.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view through a nozzle showing. one form of assembly in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial sectional view through another form of terminal member securing means;
Fig.v 3 is a view similar to. Fig. 2 showing another form of terminal member securin means; and
Fig; 4 is a plan view of a terminal member.
In the drawings the body or adapter A is internally screw threaded at ill, for connecting the nozzle to aliquid supply, and also has internal threads at l 2 in whichis threaded a tip B having flange I4 in contact with the end of the body A. The periphery of the flange l4. may be knurled or shaped for engagement with. a wrench for screwing th tip into the body.
The tip B is provided with the usual orifice l6,
and a conical seat l8, converging from the bore 20 in the tip to the orifice l6.
Seated against the conical surface H3 in the tip is a terminal member C; the angle of the seating surface 22 or" which corresponds to the seating surface IS in the tip B, and which is adapted to be seated centrally relative to the orifice IS in the tip B.
The terminal member C, in Fig. 1; is retained in position by a lock-nut D, in. threaded engagement with threads 25 in the bore 2-1? of the tip'B, and is provided with a slot 26. for the reception of a tool for screwin the nut D. inwardly to force the terminal member against its seat.
In Fig. l, the terminal member 0, is provided within andwithoutthespacer E, openings 29 are formed in the wallof the spacer.
Threaded in the bore 25 of the tip 13, is a strainer support G, which is provided with a knurled flange 28, on which is supported a gauze strainer 38, for straining the liquid passing through the nozzle.
The liquid passing through the nozzle enters the openin in the end of the body A into a chamber a, then through the strainer 30 and, openings 32 in the strainer support into a chamber g in the strainer support G, then through feed slots 34 in the lock-nut D into a chamber b in the tip B, then through tangential slots 36 in the terminal member" into a whirl chamber between the upper end of the terminal member C and the wall of the tip B, and then out through orifice E6 in a conical spray, due to the tangentially directed slots 26 in the terminal member.
As the seating surfaces on the tip B and the terminal member C are at the same angle, and as there is a universal pivotal connection be-v tween the terminal member 0 and the lock-nut D, the terminal member C will be centrally seated with relation of the orifice l6 and the conical seat it in the tip B, even though the axis of one or more of the several members should be angularly misaligned with other members as assembly occurs, whereby a tight seal is maintained at all portions of seating surface 22 of the terminal member C, except the portions through which the slots 36 are formed, so that the whirling of the liquid in the whirl chamber 38, caused by the fiow through slots 36, will not be disrupted by leakage thereto from chamber b due to an incorrect positioning of the terminal member C with relation to the tip B and so that the whirl chamber itself is concentric with the orifice to provide a symmetrical spray.
. cally shaped head portion 5%, seated in a socket in the lower end. of the spacer E In this form the liquid passes up through passage 34 into the interior of the spacer and out through feed hole 251 The terminal member C is provided with tangential slots 35 and a stem 28 The lock-nut D is provided with the usual tool engaging slot 26 In the form shown in Fig. 3, the same reference characters have been applied to the same elements as in Fig. 1, with the numeral 3 affixed, and in which the spacer E is provided with a spherically shaped end portion 52 seated in a socket in the faceof the lock-nut D It will readily be appreciated that the terminal member and the spacer may be formed in a sin gle piece, with a spherically shaped end portion 3 to seat in a socket in the lock-nut, or with a socket for the reception of a spherically shaped member on the lock-nut.
It will be evident that numerous variations of the details of construction may be made, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
The advantages of my invention result from the provision of means between the terminal member and the lock-nut, whereby the terminal member is accurately and uniformly seated in the seat in the tip, to prevent leakage between the engaging portions of the terminal member and the tip, and to perfectly align the terminal and tip, whereby disturbance to the whirling of the liquid in the whirl chamber, caused by jets delivered to the whirl chamber, is prevented.
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A nozzle comprising a hollow tip, a discharge orifice in said tip and a seat in said tip surrounding said orifice, a terminal member, said terminal member having a surface for engagement with the seat in said tip and being provided with slots in said surface for the passage of liquid to said discharge orifice, means, including a looking nut threaded into said tip and a substantially spherically shaped surface and a seat therefor permitting swiveling movement between said terminal member and said nut, for holding said terminal member with said surface in contact with said seat and providing proper angular alignment and sealing engagement between said surface and said seat, and means for admitting liquid to the outer ends of said terminal member slots.
2. A nozzle comprising a hollow tip, a discharge orifice in said tip and a seat in said tip surrounding said orifice, a terminal member, said terminal member having a surface for engage- -ment with the seat in said tip, there being a swirl chamber between the tip and the terminal member communicating with the discharge orilice and slots in said surface of the terminal member tangentially arranged with respect to the swirl chamber, means, including a locking nut threaded into said tip and a substantially spherically shaped surface and a seat therefor permitting swiveling movement between said terminal member and said nut, for holding said terminal member with said surface in contact with said seat and providing proper angular alignment and sealing engagement between said surface and said seat, and means for admitting liquid to the outer ends of said terminal member slots:

A nozzle comprising a hollow tip, a discharge orifice in said tip and a seat in said tip surrounding said orifice, a terminal member, said terminal member having a surface for engagement with the seat in said tip, there being a swirl chamber between the tip and the terminal member communicating with the discharge orifice and slots in said surface of the terminal member tangentially arranged with respect to the swirl chamber, means, including a locking nut threaded into said tip and a substantially spherically shaped element and a seat therefor permitting swiveling movement between said terminal member and said nut, for holding said terminal member with said surface in contact with said seat and providing proper angular alignment and sealing engagement between said surface and said seat, and means for admitting liquid to the outer ends of said terminal member slots.

6. A nozzle comprising a hollow tip, a discharge orifice in said tip and a seat in said tip surrounding said orifice, a terminal member, said terminal member having a surface for engagement with the seat in said tip and being provided with slots in said surface for the passage of liquid to said discharge orifice, means, including a looking nut threaded into said tip and a substantially spherically shaped surface carried by said locking nut and a seat therefor permitting swiveling movement between said terminal member and said nut, for holding said terminal member with said surface in contact with said seat and providing proper angular alignment and sealing engagement between said surface and said seat, and means for admitting liquid to the outer ends of said terminal member slots.
