ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,241, dated April 11, 1882.
Application tiled October 18, 18H1. (No model.)
To all wliom it may concern y Be it known that I, KNoT'r H. PEDEICK, of Hudson, in the county ot' Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part otl this specification, in whichro Figure lis a plan view of the blank from which the envelope is made. Fig. 2 is a perspectiveview, showing the blank creased and ready to be joined to form an open envelope. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the envelope closed, looking from the Hap side and showing the printed matter on the iap.
Similar letters of reference in the several gnres denote the same parts.
My invention has for its object to provide zo an improved envelope which, when closed, shall present a smooth, unbroken surface on each side, and which shall be of uniform thickness, except within a short distance of its side and top edges, so as to enable a clear and 2 5 regular impression'to be made on either side by a printing-press.
-To this end. my invention consists of an envelope consisting of a middle portion having short end flaps which are adapted to be 3o folded inward, and are provided with adhesive material on their outer faces, an inner iiap adapted to be folded down upon the inner portion so as to cover the entire face of the same except for a short distance from the top and to be pasted to the end liaps, and an upper outer Hap adapted to be folded down upon the inner iiap so as to cover the same and extend ush with the edges ofthe middle portion. A 4o In the accompanying drawings, A represents themiddle portion of the envelope, provided at its end with short flaps a a, which are folded inward, as shown in Fig. .3, and have paste or other adhesive material applied on their outer faces, as indicated by the lines a a in Fig. 2.
Bis the rst or inner flap, folded inward against the middle port-ion, A, and made to adhere to the pasted end flaps, a a, and having a portion cut away at c to facilitate the open- 5o ing of the envelope by the thumb or finger.
C is the outer Hap, which folds down yover the inner flap, B, completely covering the same and extending flush with the end and bottom edges of the portion A, as shown in Fig. 3.
From this construction it will be seen that that part of the envelope included within the spacev bounded by the dotted lines shown in Fig. 3 is composedot three plies of paper, of uniform thickness throughout, and that when Go either face of the closed envelope is printed upon within said inclosed space the impression will be clear, smooth, and regular, and not broken and irregular, as it would be if the number of thicknesses ot' material varied within 65 said space, as it does in an envelope as ordinarily constructed'. I am therefore enabled to entirely fill the space with clear and regular printed matter, impressed upon one orboth sides of the envelope, and I am also enabled 7o to write upon one or both sides of the envelope and have an even and regular surface for the pen to act upon.
I claim as my invention- Thehereindescribed envelope, consisting of 7 5 the middle portion, A, having the short end fiaps, ct a, which are folded inward and provided with adhesive material on their outer faces, an inner flap, B, having the cutaway portion e, and folded down upon the middle portion, 8oI
A, so as to cover nearly the entire face ot' the same, and secured to the end flaps, and an outer iiap, C, folded down upon the inner ap and extending flush with the edges of the inner portion, A, the said construction producing 8 5 an article having three unbroken plies of uniform thickness, except'where the side aps and cut-away portion c are located, and at'- fording a smooth, unbroken body of uniform thickness, upon either side of which aclear and 9c regular impression'can be made by a printing-press, as set forth.
