MACHINERY FOR SEWING THE MOUTHS OF BAGS.

SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,233, dated April 11, 1852. Application filed October 21, 1881. (No model.)

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ll/IARTIN, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Sewing the Mouths of Bags; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings annexed to and forming part of the same, furnishes a full and clear description thereof, sufficientto enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and operate the same.

The object of my invention is to afford a quick and cheap means of holding during the process of sewing up by machinery the mouths of bags filled with grain or other materials, which have heretofore been usually sewed by hand.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the operative mechanism of the frame or support which holds the bag while the operation is performed. Fig. 2 shows the machinery by which the sewing is accomplished in its position on the frame shown in Fig. 1,'being a top view.

A is one end of a frame, which I prefer to make of cast-iron. It is adapted to be firmly screwed to a beam or other place of support. (J and B are braces, which are fastened to it at right angles to A, and which terminate in a similar piece to A at their other ends, so as to inclose a space sufficient to contain the ordinary width of the bags to be sewed. At each end of the holding-frame is placed a spring, E, terminating in a hook, the purpose of which is to catch the bag at each side of'its mouth and stretch the same so as to close the lips together.

D is 'a rod which runs between the two sides of the frame A, and which is provided with a handle, I*, at one end, by which it may be rotated. A cam,G, is firmly fixed at one extremity of this rod, and is provided with a lock, H, so that when the handle F is pressed and B, where the spring-hooks E, being in serted at each side of'the bags mouth, close the lips together. The cam Grbeing unlocked and the handle F being elevated so as to depress the spursf, the lips of the bag are fastened ontothe said spurs f. The handle F being then forced down draws up the mouth ot'the bag so as to tighten the same, and the cam G being locked by H the bag is held firmly with its lips pressed together flat, and with a space between its contents and its edges sufficient to allow the same to be closed by sewing.

The machinery by which the sewing is done consists of any suitable reciprocating needle and looper with the mechanism of an ordinary sewing-machine. The bag being held stationary, it is necessary that the sewing-machine should travel, and it is therefore arranged to rest on the braces or supports G and B. A handle, R, on each side of the machine affords the means for propelling the same by sliding it along on B and O. p I

The crank-wheel M is caused to revolve by means of suitable intermediate gear-wheels, which receive motion-from the wheel J, gearing with and moving on the rack W.

' T0 M is attached a reciprocating needle, which carries the strong twine that sews the mouth of the bag. This needle reciprocates in a guide, S, which gives direction to the needle, and the guide S is pivoted at its lower end so as to oscillate in correspondence with the move-- ments of the crank-wheel M, by which construction it will be seen a feed movement is accomplished.

No claim is made on any of the details or features of the sewing-machine in this application. Anysuitable machine may be used which has the general features above described, and,
