' This invention relates to the class of machine toolsand more particularly to an improved mandrel structure for grinding machines.- v

- Another object of this invention resides in the provision-of a novelsdesign Otmandrel which makes `theus'e of a combined nutand locking flange so as to eliminate any member which may hinder the passing of a wrench' jar or other tool past 'the end ofk themandrel. l'
I Still Yfurther objects of the invention reside in,
the provision'of a novel mandrel structure that isf-strong, durable, highly'eificient in operation, simple in construction andlmanufacture, lformed from a; minimum number ofv parts, and which is adapted for easy and simple removal and replacement of grinding stones.
These, `together with/the' various ancillary cio-1v jects of the invention which will becomeapparl ent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this mandrel structure, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is an exploded sectional view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view showing the mandrel structure in its assembled relationship; and,
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the invention. Y
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral I generally designates the mandrel structure comprising the present invention which includes a spindle I2 adapted to be rotated, which spindle has a threaded portion I4 which is left-hand threaded. An extension I6 is integrally formed with the spindle I2 and is right-hand threaded.
Threadedly secured on the spindle I2 is a nut I8 which is adapted to abut against a supporting flange generally indicated at 2U, which consists of a disk 22 having an outer annular flange 24. The supportinglange 20 is positioned on the spindle I2.
The grinding stone 26 may be any suitable emery wheel, sandstone wheel, or the like, provided with a central aperture 28. The grindstone 26 is provided with a sharpened periphery as at 30. This grindstone is slidably placeable ,f4 anims. (ci. ,5r-Lissy upongthe cylindricalportion 32 of the combined lockingV nutand `flange. member generallyriindlcatedat -34 which includes a disk3liV integrally fformedrrwith' the cylindrical vportion 32,'-which disklirsffprovided withan outer ange 38 at its periphery'. The grinding stone may extend onto the threaded portion I4 of the mandrel I2 .when the. thickness of the stoneis greater than the spaceZ. Accordingly,` any thickness of standard stone may be usedvwithout any change inthe i'ange 34. Suitable span arrangedfholes or aperl turesllil are formed in the. disk3 lfor aidingl the vrenloving or replacement of the vmember `threaded engagement on theextension I6. It is to be noted that the extension I6 is ofless diameter than the rest ofY the spindle I2 and hence-forms a shoulder generally indicated at 42.

To remove the grinding stone, it is first necessary to loosen the nut I8. The member 34 should not be loosened until the nut I8 is first loosened.
Since the variation for thickness of the stone 2B is taken care of by the nut I8, then the front face of the stone will always be in the same position. f
Since, from the foregoing, the construction and advantages of this mandrel structure are readily apparent, further description is believed to be unnecessary.
However, since numerous modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the precise embodiment shown and described, but also the modiiications and improvements may be readily resorted to which fall within the scope of the appended claims. Y
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A mandrel construction comprising a cylindrical spindle, said spindle having an extension attached thereto of smaller diameter than the invention, what is Y 3 spindle forming a shoulder, said spindle being left-hand threaded, a nut threadedly secured on said spindle, a supporting flange member on said spindle, said extension being right-hand threaded, a grinder stone having a central opening therethrough, a locking member comprising a tubular internally threaded portion, and a disk integrally formed with said tubular portion, an annular flange formed on the periphery of the disk, said tubular portion being received in the opening in said grinder stone, said locking member being threadedly secured on said extension in abutting engagement with said shoulder, said nut locking said supportingflange in engagement with said stone. said disk being held so that the annular ange thereon engages said grinder stone.
2. A mandrel construction comprising a cylindrical spindle, said spindle having an extension attached thereto `of smaller diameter than the spindle forming a shoulder, said spindle being left-hand threaded, a nut threadedly secured on saidspindle, a supporting flange member on said spindle, said extension being right-hand threadedjla grinder stone having a central opening therethrough, a locking member comprising a tubular internally threaded portion, and a disk integrally formed with said tubular portion, an annular ange formed onthe periphery of the disk, said tubular portion being received in the opening in said grinder stone, said locking member being threadedly secured on said extension in abutting engagement with said shoulder, said nut-locking said supporting flange in engagement with said stone, said disk being held so that the annular iiange thereon engages said grinder stone, said disk having a pair of apertures therethrough for reception of a tool for selectively fastening and removing said locking member in engagement with said grinder stone.
3. A mandrel construction comprising a cylindrical spindle, said spindle having an extension attached thereto of smaller diameter than the spindle forming a shoulder, said spindle being left-hand threaded, a nut threadedly secured on said spindle, a supporting flange member on said spindle, said extension being right-hand thread- 4 ed, a grinder stone having a central opening therethrough, a locking member comprising a tubular internally threaded portion, and a disk integrally formed with said tubular portion, an annular flange formed on the periphery of the disk, said tubular portion being received in the opening in said grinder stone, said locking member being threadedly secured on said extension in abutting engagement with said shoulder, said nut locking said supporting ange in engagement with said stone, said disk being held so that the annular flange thereon engages said grinder stone, said disk having a pair of apertures therethrough for reception of a tool for selectively fastening and removing said locking member in engagement with said grinder stone, said supporting flange including a disk portion having an annular flange integrally formed therewith, said last recited annular ange being held in engagement with said grinder stone.
4. AV mandrel'construction comprising a cylindrical spindle, said spindle having an extensionv attached thereto oi smaller diameter than the spindle formingv a shoulder, said spindle being left-hand threaded, a nut threadedly secured on said spindle, a supporting flange member on said spindle, said extension being right-hand threaded, a grinder stone having a central opening therethrough, a locking member comprising a tubular internally threadedportion, and a, Ydisk integrally formed with said tubular portion, an annular flange formed on the periphery of the disk, said tubular portion being received in the opening in said grinder stone, said locking member being threadedly secured on said extension in abutting engagement with said shoulder, said. nut locking said supporting flange in engagement with said. stone, said disk being held so that the annular ilange thereon engages said grinder stone"y said supporting ange including a disk portion having an annular flange integrally formed therewith, saidlast recited annular iiange being held in engagement with said grinder stone.V
