' DRAWER CONSTRUCTION Filed March 25, 1948- Patented July 31, 1951 UNITED" STATES PATENT OFFICE DRAWER CONSTRUCTION Edward Dickerson Backus, Mount Pleasant, S. 0. Application March 25, 1948, Serial No. 16,900
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a drawer construction.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved drawer construction which forms a part of a knockdown prefinished cabinet of that type embodied in my copending application for cabinet filed of even date herewith, wherein the front wall of the drawer is formed. partly from that piece of the front panel of the cabinet which is grouted or cut out to form the drawer opening. The removed panel piece has glued to the inner face thereof an inner facing sheet, and also has glued to the outer face thereof an outer facin The drawer is adapted to engage in a drawer opening which is formed in a front panel I! constructed of plywood. The front panel I! forms the front of a cabinet and is cut out to sheet. Marginal extension strips are glued to inner side of the outer facing sheet and to the marginal edges of the panel piece so as to form projecting flanges around the drawer front. By the construction of a drawer front from the removed piece of the front panel for the cabinet, a very substantial waste of plywood panel is eliminated and the formation of the cabinet from a single piece of plywood is made practical and profitable.
To the foregoing objects, and others which may hereinafter more fully appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a plan view, partly broken away of a drawer constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detailed front elevation, partly broken away of a front panel from which the body portion of the drawer front is formed.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral I designates generally a pair of side walls for a drawer which are formed at their rear with a vertical groove I2 within which the tongue I3 of a rear wall I4 is adapted to engage. The side walls I0 adjacent the lower lengthwise edges thereof are also formed with lower bottom retaining grooves H within which a bottom wall I5 is adapted to engage.
The drawer is formed with a front wall, generally designated as I6, and the front wall I6 is of composite or built-up construction as will be hereinafter described.
form a rectangular drawer opening I8. That piece of the front panel II which is cut out is embodied in the drawer front I6 and is designated by the numeral I9.
In building up the front wall I6 of the drawer, the removed panel piece I9 has glued to the front and rear faces thereof facing sheets 20 and 2|, respectively. These facing sheets may be formed out of Masonite or other suitable material which is relatively rigid and is formed with a relatively smooth surface for receiving paint, enamel or other suitable finish.
In building up the composite front wall I6, the marginal edges of the removed panel piece I9 have secured thereto narrow extension strips 22 which are glued not only to the marginal edges of the panel piece I9 but are also glued to the inner face of the outer facing sheet 20. In practice when the panel piece I9 has been cut from the opening I8 the extension strips 22 are inserted between the two facing sheets 20 and 2| and glued therebetween. The inner facing sheet 2I is then cut down at its upper and lower edges to conform to the original upper and lower edges of the panel piece I9 and a portion of the extension strips 22 are also out down so that these extension strips will be substantially narrower than the width of the panel piece IS.
The inner facing sheet 2! at the opposite or outer ends thereof is formed with tongues 23 which are adapted to engage in vertical grooves 24 formed in the side walls I0.
With a drawer construction and method of assembly as hereinbefore described the front panel of the cabinet can be formed out of a single piece of plywood thereby eliminating joints usually found in built-up front panels which usually crack the finish on the front panel. By building up the removed panel piece as hereinbefore described, the drawer front will be provided with the extended marginal portions which abut against the outer side of the front panel of the cabinet in a conventional manner.
It will, of course, be understood that the front wall I6 may also have secured thereto a drawer pull 25 of conventional construction.
I claim:
A drawer comprising opposite side walls, front and rear walls and a bottom wall, said front wall comprising a body of rectangular configuration, front and rear facing sheets glued to the opposite faces of said body, said front facing sheet extending beyond the marginal edges of said body, and extension strips secured about the marginal edges of said body and to the rear side of said front facing sheet, said extension strips being narrower than said body and in abutting relation with the ends of said side walls and forming marginal flanges with said front facing sheet.
