This invention relates to inking mechanism, particularly inking mechanism for printing presses. It has to do with inking mechanism which is movable into and out of cooperative relationship with the form rollers of a printing press, such, for example, as inking mechanism of the so-called rollaway type.
Inking mechanism is well known which can be bodily removed or rolled away from a printing press with which the inking mechanism is adapted to be used to facilitate work on the press when the press is not being used for printing, as, for example, when a form is being made ready, and also to provide for cleaning and repair of parts of the press and inking mechanism. The form inking rollers are mounted in the press and the inking mechanism which delivers ink from the ink fountain to the form rollers is separated from the form rollers when it is moved away. The inking mechanism comprises an ink fountain and suitable means for working up the ink and delivering the worked up ink to the form rollers, which means may include an ink drum, a ductorv roller or rollers between the ink fountain and the ink drum, a vibrator roller or rollers cooperating directly with the fom rollers and an ink transfer roller or rollers between the ink drum and the' vibrator roller or rollers.
It is fequently necessary when the inker is disposed in its inoperative position away from the press to remove the form rollers in order t gain access to portion of the press to be worked on. The form rollers are mounted in the press in position to ink the form during operation of the press. rollers are either composition or rubber and, of course, are covered with ink. They cannot be set down on their working surfaces because the rollers would thereby be deformed and because anything coming in contact With the working surfaces of the form rollers would be smeared with ink. It has been necessary to specially provide a place to dispose the form rollers when they have been removed so that they are supported by their shafts with their Working surfaces out ofv contact with the support.
Moreover the form rollers are long and heavy, particularly in the larger sized presses, and it has generally been necessary for two men working together to remove the form rollers individually one after the other. When the form rollers are replaced they have to be replaced in similar fashion. I have devised inking mechanism which is movable into and out of cooperative relationship with respect to the press, i. e., into and out of position to deliver ink to the form rollers, and which may be so operatedthat when desired the form rollers may be automatically removed from the press and carried along with the inker. Thus the problem of removing and disposing the form rollers as above explained is obviated, it being unnecessary to even so much as touch the form rollers by hand when it is desired to remove them along with the inking mechanism. When the form rollers are removed along with the inking mechanism they are supported by their shafts at the ends thereof and are maintained out of Icontact with all other rollers. The ink delivering means may be turnable into means when carried by theV `supportA and an operating member may be mounted on the init delivering means shiftable to position to engage the rorrn roller means and remove the same from the support upon turning of the ink delivering means outl of said location so that when desired the form roller means may be carried with the ink delivering means.
Other details, objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the following description of a present preferred embodiment thereof proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown a present preferred embodiment of the invention in which Figure l is an elevational view of inking mechanism and a portion of a printing press with which the inking mechanism is cooperable, the inking mechanism being shown in operative position with respect to the press;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l showing the inking mechanism in angularly displaced position ready to be moved away from the press While leaving the form rollersin position in the press;
Figure `6 is a vertical longitudinal cross-sectional view taken on the line VI-VI of Figure 5, vMy invention is embodied in the apparatus shown in the drawings, which apparatus is the which' may operate in normal manner in print# ing.y 'Since the invention is concerned onlywith the inling mechanism the remainder of the press is" not shown. The press has adjacent opposite sides thereof and extending longitudinally of the press in parallel relation bars 3 each carrying brackets 1i, the brackets 4 being arranged in pposed pairs as shown in Figure 5. There are' as many pairs of brackets A as there are form rollers in the press. Each bracket i is s'lidable along the bar 3 which carriesit so as tol assume a desired adjusted position on the bar and is fastened in suchposition by a set screw 5.
Each bracket 4 has a portion 6 projecting inwardly of the press from the bar 3 carrying` the bracket'an'd which carries at its inner end an upwardly open form roller bearing fi vertically adjustable kby an adjusting screw 8. The bearings 1 Aare thus disposed in transversely aligned vpairs as shown in Figure 5, each being adapted to have a form roller shaft portion to be carried thereby disposed therein by generally 4downward movement and removed therefrom by generally upward movement.
There are shown two form rollers 9. Any desired number of form vrollers may be employed, one-or more. Each form roller has an enlarged central or Working portion I0, necks II at both ends rof the portion lo and shaft portions I2 at the ends of the roler connected with the necks II,-l the shaft portions I2 being, when the form rollers are in use, journaled in the bearings 1. Each shaft portion l2 extends outwardly beyond the outer edge of the corresponding bearing 1 as shown in Figure 5. The press bed which carries' the type form moves under and in contactwith the bottoms of the portions I El of the form rollers, the form rollers thus inking the form. Ink is de livered to the form rollers by inkdelivering means noWYto-be described.
The inking mechanism comprisesY aframe hav-'-V ing opposed frame members I3 which extend in generally vertical planes' parallel to each other. The frame members I3 are suitably fastened to# gether by cross members not shown. JournaledY fastened to its upper surface an upwardly facing rack I1 with which one of the pinions I5 meshese the inker frame comprising the frame members I3 and the mechanism carried thereby being partially supported by the press frame extension I6 through the racks I1. As will presently appear the inker frame may be bodily angularly displaced about the axis of the shaft |4.
The opposed portions of the press frame extension I6 also have tracks I8 and each of the inker frame members I3 carries a roller I9 adapted during movement of the inker toward and away from the press, as will be presently explained, to ride on one of the tracks I8. At the right hand end of each track I3, viewing Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4, there is a track extension member which is vertically movable and which when in its uppermost position has its upper surface at the level of the upper surface of the corresponding track I 8 and in longitudinal alignment therewith so as in effect to form a short extension of the track. Each extension member 20 has a sleeve 2| projecting downwardly therefrom through which passes a bolt 22 having a head 23. Each member 2B has a socket 24 receiving the head 23 of the corresponding bolt 22, upward movement of the member 29 being limited by engagement of the bottom of the socket 24 with the under surface of the bolt head 23. Each bolt 22 and sleeve 2| are disposed within a bore 25 in the press frame extension I6 and each bolt 22 is screwed into the press frame extension. A compression coil spring 23 is confined in the bottom of the bore and presses upwardly against the bottom surface of the sleeve 2l so as normally to maintain the member 20 in its uppermost position as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4. The springs 26 are strong enough to hold the members 2|] in their uppermost positions when the rollers I9 and the mechanism connected therewith are supported by the members 29 as shown in Figures 2 and 4.
Journaled in the inker frame is a transverse shaft 21 to one end of which is fastened by a pin 28 a handle 29 for turning the shaft. Adjacent its opposite ends and within the inker frame members I3 the shaft 21 carries eccentrics 30. The press frame 2 has extensions 3| each disposed above one of the eccentrics 39 having a vertically oriented tapped hole into which is threaded a bolt 32 having a head 33, a nut 34 being adapted to be threaded onto each bolt 32 and turned up against the corresponding extension 3| to maintain the bolt in adjusted position. Each extension 3| is counterbored at 35 to provide clearance for the bolt head 33 upon vertical adjustment of the bolt. When the inker is in operative position relatively to the press each of the eccentrics is adapted to engage the bottom surface of the corresponding bolt head 33. But at the same time the respective rollers I9 are disposed upon the track extensions 29. With the parts thus disposed turning of the handle 29 causes rotation of the shaft 21 and of the eccentrics 39. Since the eccentrics 39 engage the lower surfaces of the bolt heads 33 and since the bolts 32 are fixedly Ipositioned in the press frame extensions 3| turning of the eccentrics 3|] causes angular displacement of the inker frame in the clockwise direction viewing Figure 1, such angular displacement being accompanied by downward depression of the track extension 29 by the rollers I9 which are disposed thereupon as shown in Figure 1. When the inker frame has been thus angularly. displaced about the axis of the shaft I4 the inker is in operative relationship with respect to the press and the ink delivering means, presently to 6 be described, are in position to deliver ink to the form rollers 9.
The ink delivering means comprises an ink fountain 3B having a fountain roll 31 for delivering ink from the ink fountain in usual manner. The fountain roll 31 is keyed to a shaft 3B disposedgenerally above the shaft I4. There is provided the usual ink drum 39 and a ductor roller 49 for transferring ink from the fountain roll 31 to the ink drum 39. Ink on the ink drum 39 is worked up by rollers 4| and 42, the latter transferring ink to the vibrator roller 43 which in turn seats in the saddle between the two form rollers 9 and transfers the ink to the form rollers. The ink transferring and working up functions may be performed in conventional manner and the invention is not dependent upon any particular arrangement of ink delivering means. vIt is sufficient to point out that when the inker is in operative position relatively to the press as shown in Figure lthe vibrator roller 43 seats in the saddle between the form rollers 9 and delivers ink thereto.
With the parts in operative position as shown in Figure 1, when it is desired to roll the inker away from the press the handle 29 is operated to turn the shaft 21 through approximately 180 which in turn rotates the eccentrics 39 through a similar angle so that the high points of the eccentrics are disposed downwardly relatively to the axis of the shaft 21 as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4. Such turning of the shaft 21 is accompanied by upward movement of the track extensions 20 under the action of the compression coil springs 26, the members 29 being stopped when their upper surfaces are in alignment with the upper surfaces of the tracks I8 by the bolt heads 23 as above explained. But upward movement of the members 29 causes consonant upward movement of the rollers I9 which at the time rest upon the members 29, and such upward movement of the rollers I 9 in turn causes angular displacement of the inker about the axis or" the shaft |11 from the position shown in Figure l to the position shown in Figures 2 and 4. Such angular displacement of the inker raises the vibrator roller 43 out of contact with the form rollers 9 and so that its lowermost point is above the uppermost points of the form rollers 9, thus providing for movement of the inker toward the left away from the press without interference between the vibrator roller and the form rollers, Movement of the inker away from the press is accomplished by turning the shaft I4 by means presently to be described. Since the pinions I5 are keyed to the shaft I 4 and mesh with the stationary racks |1 turning of the shaft I4 in the counterclockwise direction viewing Figure 1 causes the pinions I5 to turn relatively to the racks I1 and hence the inker frame and everything carried thereby is bodily linearly displaced toward the left. During such displacement of the inker the rollers I9 ride upon the tracks I8. The inker is shown in position spaced from the press in Figure 3.
When it is desired to return the inker to operative position the shaft I 4 is turned in the clockwise direction until the inker assumes the position of Figures 2 and 4 whereupon the shaft 21 is turned through approximately 180 to cause the eccentrics 30 to angularly displace the inker back to the position of Figure l with the vibrator roller 43 in engagement with the form rollers 9 so as to deliver ink thereto.

As shown in Figure vf5 the slides de lare disposed against the inner surfaces of theinker frame members i3 and are spa-ced' slightly outwardly from the vertical plane containing the ends of the'shaft portions l2. Each-offth'e'siides 4S carries inwardly projecting lifting membersl 5B which are spaced apart on centers a `distance equal to the horizontal distance betweenrthe axes of the form rollers and, when the-parts are in the position of Figures l, 4, 5 and 6, directly underlie the ends of lthe shaft portions 1:2' as shown inl'iguire 5. -With the parts thus positioned the lifting-members E@ arespaced slightly( below the respective shaft portionsiif. I claim:
l. linking mechanism comprising a supporting structure, a form roller carried thereby and removable therefrom, means for delivering ink to the form roller, the ink delivering means being movable into and out of location adjacent the form roller when carried vby said supporting structure, support means on the ink delivering means and means carried by the support means and movable relatively thereto to operative position to directly supportingly engage the form roller and remove the same from said supporting structure upon movement of the ink delivering means out of said location and movable relatively to the support means to inoperative position wherein it has no eeot on the form roller upon movement of the ink delivering means out of said locationY 2. Inking mechanism comprising open form roller bearings, a form roller removably mounted in said bearings, means for delivering ink to the form roller, the ink delivering means beingmovable into and out of location adjacent the form roller when disposed in said bearings, support means on the ink delivering means and means carried by the support means and movable relatively thereto to operative position to remove the form roller from said bearings upon movement of the ink delivering means out of said location and movable relatively to the support means to inoperative position wherein it has no effect on the form roller upon movement of the ink delivering means out of said location.
Inking mechanism comprising upwardly open form roller bearings, a form rollerremovably mounted in said bearings, means for delivering ink to the form roller, the ink delivering means being movable into and out of location adjacent the form roller when disposed in said bearings, support means on the ink delivering means and means carried by the support means and movable relatively thereto to operaative position to lift the form roller upwardly out of said bearings upon movement of the ink delivering means out of said location and movable relatively to the support means to inoperative position wherein it has no effect on the form roller upon movement of the ink delivering means out of said location.
4. Inking mechanism comprising a supporting structure, a form roller carried thereby and removable therefrom, means for delivering ink to the form roller, the ink delivering means being shiitable by movement comprising substantially horizontal movement into and out of location adjacent the form roller when carried by said supporting structure, support means on the ink delivering means and means carried by the support means movable relatively thereto to operative position to directly supportingly engage the of location adjacent the form roller when carried by said supporting structure, support means on the ink delivering means and means carried by the support means and movable relatively thereto to operative position to directly supportingly engage the form roller and remove the same from said supporting structure upon shifting of the ink delivering means out of said location and movable relatively to the support means to 'inoperative position wherein it has no effect on the form roller upon shifting of the ink delivering .means out of said location.
` 6,4 Inking mechanism comprising a supporting structure, form roller means carried thereby and removable therefrom, means for delivering ink ,to the form roller means, the ink delivering means 'being' movable into and out of location adjacent the form roller means when carried by said supporting structure and during such movement being angularly displaceable, support means on the ink delivering means, and means carried by the support means and movable relatively thereto to operative position to engage the form roller means and remove the same from said supporting structure upon angular displacement of the inl: delivering means and movable relatively to the support means to inoperative position wherein it has no effect on the form roller means upon angular displacement of the ink delivering means.
7. Inking mechanism comprising a, supporting structure, form roller means carried thereby and removable therefrom, means for delivering ink to the form roller means, the ink delivering means being movable into and out of location adjacent the form roller means when carried by said supporting structure and having a portion which during such movement is generally vertically displaceable, support means on said portion and means carried by the support means movable relatively thereto to operate position to engage the form roller means and remove the same from said supporting structure upon generally vertical displacement of said portion and movable relatively to the support means to inoperative position wherein it has no effect on the form roller means upon generally vertical displacement of said portion.
8. Inking mechanism comprising a supporting structure, form roller means carried thereby and removable therefrom, means for delivering ink to the form roller means, the ink delivering means being movable into and out of location adjacent the form roller means when carried by said supporting structure and during such movement being sequentially angularly and linearly displaceable, support means on the ink delivering means and means carried by the support means and movable relatively thereto to operative position to engage the form roller means and remove the same from said supporting structure upon angular displacement of the ink delivering means and movable relatively to the support means to inoperative position `wherein it has no effect on the form roller means upon angular displacement of the ink delivering means.
9. Inking mechanism comprising a supporting structure, form roller means carried thereby and removable therefrom, means for delivering inl; to he form roller means, the ink delivering means being movable into and out of location adjacent the form roller means when carried by said supporting structure, support means on the ink delivering means, an operating member mounted on the support means and means for shifting the operating member relatively to the support means betweenoperative position wherein the operatingmembers adaptedto engage theformroller means andi'remove the same from said supporting structure upon movement of' the ink' delivering means out of 'said .location and inoperative posif tion -Whereinthe operatingmember hasno eieot on the form roller means, upon movementoffthe ink delivering means out of 'said1oeaton;.
