SCRAPER Filed Aug. 25, 1948 Benjamin B. Yanz/fo INVENTOR.
BY @Maa/iu and Waxy Em Patented July 17, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and usefulimprovements inscrapers and more particular 1y to a general utility scraper for use wherever it is desired to scrape the surface of the work.
An important object of the invention is to provide a scraper with interchangeable blade having a detachable handle attached thereto and constructing the scraper blade with a downwardly curved or inclined scraping front edge to be held at an eifective scraping angle against the work by the handle while pushing the scraper over the surface of the work.
A still further object is to provide a tool of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, efficient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a separate view of a modified blade construction, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating a further modified construction wherein the blade is provided with a pair of detachable handles, one handle being provided to exert a downward pressure on the scraper while the other handle is provided to exert a pushing or pulling pressure on the scraper.
Referring now to the drawings in detail and first with respect to the form of the invention i1 lustrated in Figure l of the drawings the numeral 5 designates the scraper blade which is constructed of rigid metal or other suitable material with its front portion E3 bent angularly with respect to its rear portion '1 to incline the front portion of the blade downwardly. The front edge of the blade 5 is beveled on its upper surface to form a scraping edge 3.
A wire handle 9 made of suitable material is detachably secured at one end to the underside of the rear portion 1 by suitable fastening means It], the handle being curved upwardly and formed with a rearwardly extending hand pushing loop In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings the blade i2 is bent downwardly at two transverse intermediate points 13 and M to accentuate the downward slope of the front cutting or scraping edge 15 of the blade.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig ure 3 the blade ii; is provided with a lower detachable handle 1'5 and an upper detachable handle iii. The lower handle ll extends rearwardly from the rear of the blade and terminates in its rear end in a downwardly extending hand grip I9.
The upper handle I8 is curved upwardly from the rear edge of the blade substantially in the shape of the letter S and terminates in its rear upper end in a substantially horizontal hand grip 20.
In the use of the tool the straight beveled front edge of the blade is inclined downwardly to engage the surface of the'work at its maximum efficient angle and is pushed or pulled forwardly or backwardly by the handle while exerting a downward pressure thereon.
In Figure 3 of the drawings the pair of handles are used by both hands of a person, the vertical handle l9 being gripped by one hand to exert a pushing or pulling force on the blade while the horizontal handle 26 is engaged by the other hand to exert a downward pressure on the blade.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A scraper comprising an elongated blade, having a substantially horizontal rear portion and a downwardly sloping front portion formed with a beveled, scraping edge, upper and lower resilient handles mounted on opposite faces of the other end portion of the blade, the upper handle including an upwardly extending, substantially S-shaped intermediate portion terminating in oppositely extending front and rear end portions, said front end portion being fixed on the blade, a hand grip on said rear end portion, said lower handle extending rearwardly beyond the upper handle and terminating in an upwardly and then downwardly extending free end portion, and a hand grip mounted on the downwardly extending free end portion of said lower handle.
