Description

Sept. 9, 1969 J, STONE 3,465,457
FULLER SCOOP Filed May 9. 1966 INVENT OR Jbhn Y 550729 ATTORNEY United States Patent US. Cl. 37-53 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A snow clearing device formed from a sheet of metal by bending it to provide a fiat scoop portion, an integral back slanting upwardly from the scoop portion for holding snow, and a rolled over portion of said back adapted to facilitate dumping of snow from said device. A handle is mounted on the device.
This application is in part a continuation of application Ser. No. 361,611, filed Apr. 17, 1964, now abandoned.
This invention relates to snow-removal apparatus and is particularly concerned with a device, hereinafter referred to as a puller scoop, for removing snow from sidewalks.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device for clearing snow from sidewalks and the like in a simple and efficient manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is attractive in appearance and which can be stored neatly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be manufactured inexpensively and which has a wide area of usefulness.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a puller scoop according to the invention, and
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view of said puller scoop.
From the drawings it will be seen that the snow clearing device of the present invention comprises a metal sheet 11 which is formed by bending to provide a flat scoop portion 12, an upwardly slanting back 13, and a rolled under portion 14 integral with the back 13 and extending along the free back edge thereof.
Secured to the flat scoop portion 12, by suitable means such as rivets, of the puller scoop is a plate 16. The plate 16 carries an angularly disposed socket 17 adapted to receive and hold an elongated detachable handle 18.
The operation of the novel snow removing puller scoop is simple and convenient. By drawing the puller scoop forward, i.e. in the direction in which the handle 18 extends, with the sheet 11 in the attitude shown in the drawings into the snow, snow will be removed by the scoop portion 12 and pile up on the sheet 11. The upwardly Patented Sept. 9, 1969 slanting back 13 restrains the snow and permits a substantial amount of snow to be loaded on the sheet 11.
When it is desired to discharge or dump the snow from the puller scoop the handle 18 is lifted and rotated rear- Wardly. The rolled under portion 14 of the sheet 11 is thereby caused to contact the ground or the surface on which the puller scoop rests and the snow carried on the sheet is permitted to slide off. The provision of the rolled under portion 14 is particularly advantageous since it does not sink or cut into a soft surface such as snow when the puller scoop is rotated rearwardly and thereby facilitates dumping of the snow.
It is clear from the foregoing description that the puller scoop of the present invention can be used easily and efficiently in removing snow from sidewalks and the like and that such snow removal does not necessitate lifting of the snow as is the case with snow shovels.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawings it will be understood that various changes may be made in the construction illustrated and that such changes are in tended to be within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A snow clearing device, adapted to remove snow from sidewalks and the like by pulling it toward the user, which is formed of a metal sheet and comprises a flat scoop portion adapted to contact the ground and remove snow therefrom, means for holding snow on said device which comprises a flat back integral with and longer than said scoop portion slanting upwardly from said scoop portion at an obtuse angle thereto, and terminating in an integral rolled under portion forming means for facilitating dumping of snow from said device and means attached to said flat portion for pulling said device.
2. A snow clearing device as set forth in claim 1 in which said means for pulling the device comprises a handle and means attached to said flat scoop portion only for detachably holding said handle.
