SPELTER RETORT-FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,105, dated April 4, 1882,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DIEDERICH W. J ANSEN, a citizen of the United States, resident at J oplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Spelter Retort-Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference bero ing had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a vertical section of my invention, and Fig.
2 is a horizontal section of the same.
This invention has relation to spelter retortfurnaces.
The invention consists mainly in the construction and novel arrangement of the inclined retort, the removable condenser communicating directly with the discharging end of the retort, the furnace-fines, and the lateral discharge for the calcined residue, all as hereinafter more fully shown and described.

each flue is set in a little from the vertical plane of the outer wall, I), of the arch, so that it is over the lateraldischarge opening 0, which extends upward through the arch and com municates with the opening (I in the lower por- 40 tion of the flue-wall a which leads to the discharging end of the retort. By this construction the inside of the wall a is brought over the inner margin of the discharge-flue act the arch, and upper and lower rests or bearin gs e and g are formed for the lower end, h, of the retort, which is cut obliquely with reference to the length of the retort, and when in position against said bearings is in vertical or nearly vertical position. The retort itselfextends upward and somewhat backward in an inclined position, the angle of inclination being about seventy-five degrees, and its upper end rests against a bearing, 70, in connection with the inner or back wall of the flue O.
F indicates the furnace, arranged over the ash-pit E, alongside the arch B, and communicating by means of fines l with the lines 0, in which the retorts are placed. These flues are lined with tiles of fire-clay, and the retorts are made of similar refractory material. The upper ends of the retort may be closed with suitable covers, or packed and stopped with luting, after the charge, so that they will not admit air. The products of combustion passing over the tops of the retorts will assist in 6 keeping out the air.
Before charging the retorts the condensers G, which are broad spouts, are placed in position through the openings at in the mouths of the retorts. These condensershave atapering form from theirinner to their outer or discharging ends. When the charge of ore is exhausted from one bank of retorts the heat may be cut off by means of dampers, and the calcined residue in the retorts let out by removing the condensers, and allowing it 0 to fall through the openings or discharge-fines c of the arch to the place of deposit below. In this manner an economical furnace may be constructed, capable of rapid action in the retorts, and requiring no discharging-slides. o 5
Retorts made of fire-tiles for roasting zinc ore by the application of external heat have 1 been before used. Two opposite sets of retorts,
resting in an inclined position, with their up-- per ends resting on the middle wall of the furnace, while their lower ends pass through the working wall of the furnace and communicate with the usual condensingchambers, where they discharge in a continuous manner, have been supplied from a hopper at their upper ends in a continuous manner. The solid residuum resulting from the distillation of the zinc from its ore has been discharged from the lower ends of the retorts through inclined and vertical passages to a receptacle below. These constructions I do not claim, broadly, as 1 have confined myself to a spelter retort-furnace having a flue-opening at its lower end into a receptable for the solid residuum when the condenser has been removed, in connection with a flue connecting the aforesaid flue with the furnace proper, and an inclined retort within the first flue, having an obliquely-cutlcwer end to which the removable tapering condenser is fitted, as hereinbefore shown and described.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a spelter retort-furnace, the flue O,having the opening d at its lower end, and the arched receptacle B, provided with the discharge-opening c, in combination with the flue 1, connecting the flue O and furnace F, and the inclined retort D within the flue G, having the obliquely-cut lower end, and the tapering removable condenser G, fitted thereto, substantially as specified.
