This invention relates to collar supports and methods of making same.
An object of this invention is to generally improve the collar support covered in Patent No. 2,248,849 issued July 8, 1941 for Collar Supports. to me. In said patent there is disclosed a collar support or laundry board of the type employed by commercial laundries for setting in place freshly laundered shirt collars to insure delivery to customer with collar uncrushed. Said patented device includes a piece of cardboard of wide V shape to which is attached a central long flat narrow strip of some flexible metal, secured at one end by means of prongs punched from the strip of metal and turned down and gripping the cardboard.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved collar support of the character described so constructed as to eliminate the necessity for punching and piercin operations for attaching the metal strip to the cardboard. Instead of using a flat metal strip, a thin wire is laminated between a sheet of cardboard and a relatively inexpensive to manufacture and yet practical and eflicient to a maximum degree.

In accordance with the present invention a relatively wide sheet of cardboard is assembled together with a central metal wire thereon, and a narrow sheet of paper which is glued on to the cardboard with the metal between. The paper may be of any desired color and since when the completed collar support is inserted between the folds of the collar of a freshly laundered shirt, only the paper is exposed, an attractive efiect is produced. Furthermore, with the present construction there is no waste of cardboard or paper and by adding extra lamination of paper to the cardboard extra strength results. The extra strength is due not only to the fact that the paper is laminated to the cardboard, but also because of the presence of metal wire between the paper and the cardboard. The collar supports may be made by a continuous method, using rolls of cardboard, rolls of paper and rolls of wire and die cutting. The wire is attached without prongs by bein glued between the paper and cardboard. Thus the device may be made quicker and more cheaply and with less waste than the device shown in previous patent.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a wholly improved economical method of making a collar support of the character described.

Referring now in detail to Figs. 1 to '7 of the drawing, l8 designates a collar support embodying the invention. The collar support It comprises a sheet II of cardboard. Said sheet is of wire U shape. It comprlses a central pormon l2 from which extend upwardly and outwardly inclined wings id. The wings l3 have outer end edges l4, upper inclined edges l5 and lower inclined edges l 6, parallel to said upper edges. Extending downwardly from the central portion I2 are a pair of spaced tabs 68 formed with a slot l8 therebetween. The slot I9 extends upwardly above the tabs l3.
Said cardboard member I! is furthermore formed adjacent the central portion of its upper edges IS, with a pair of spaced symmetrical notches 28, similar in dimension and shape to the tabs l8. Extending between the notches 26 is a tab 2| exactly similar in shape to the shape of the slot or notch IS. The tab- 25 extends above the slots 29 as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing.
On the central portion 52 of the cardboard is a longitudinal strip of wire 25 which extends from the middle of the upper edge '26 of the slot I!) to the middle of the upper edge 21 of the tab 2|. The piece of wire 25 extends longitudinally and centrally of the cardboard. It will be noted that the cardboard H is symmetrical about the wire 25.
Pasted over the central portion :2 of the cardboard and covering the piece of wire 25 is a sheet 30 of paper. While the strip of cardboard is about eight and one-half inches in length straight across from edge Hi to edge i l, the strip of paper is about two inches in width. It is centraly located with respect to the wings; l3 in other words, the longitutdinal axis of the strip of paper 36 is coextensive with the wire 25.
The strip of paper 30 has parallel side edges 3|. It is formed at its lower end with tabs 32 superimposed on the tabs l8. It is formed with a notch 33 registering with the notch l9. At its upper end it is formed with notches 34 registering with the notches 2|] of the cardboard. It is also formed with a central tab 35 superimposed on the tab 2| of the cardboard. The paper is glued to the cardboard and thus holds the wire 25 in place. The wire 25 is flexible and it is attached to the collar support by gluing the paper to the cardboard. The wire may be asoft steel wire and the paper as may be kraft paper if desired.
The collar support may be made by continuous process, that is, an elongated piece of cardboard 0 having a width equivalent to the width between the edges M is fed from a roll. An elongated piece of wire W is likewise fed from a reel and an elnogated strip P of paper is also fed from a roll and glued to the cardboard C thereby attaching the wire W in place. The separate collar supports may then be made by die cutting along the outlines of the upper and lower edges of the device.
It will be noted that the upper edge of the collar support is substantially the same as the lower edge, so that there is no waste of cardboard or paper. In other words, the tab 21 of one collar support forms the notch IQ of an adjacent collar support. Furthermore, the tabs 18 of one collar support form the notches 2|] of an adjacent collar support. The same is true of the piece of paper 38, since the tab 35 of one piece of paper forms the notch 33 of an adjacent one, and the tabs 32 of one piece of paper form the notches 34 of an adjacent piece of paper.
There is no waste of wire either because every piece of wire is utilized and the piece of wire W is merely out into the lengths, one for each collar support.
The manner of using the collar support in conjunction with shirt collars is illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The wings l3 are inserted between the folded over collar portions 59 and the inner collar band 5|. The tabs I8, 32 are bent forwardly about their bases to contact the front of the shirt adjacent the collar. The tab 2|, 35 is bent back and down over the overlapping tabs of the collar band so as to grip the same, and said tab 2|, 35 is held in position to which it is bent because of the presence of the wire 25.
It will be noted that in use the paper strip 38 is exposed at the front of the collar and since it can be made in any color, an attractive eiiect is produced.
The collar support has increased strength be cause of the fact that the cardboard is laminated with paper and with wire. The wire is attached to the cardboard without prongs and without necessity for any punching or piercing operation. The device may be manufactured quickly by the continuous method and die cutting. There is no waste of either cardboard, paper or wire.
In Figs. 8 to i l there is illustrated a collar support embodying the invention and illustrating a modified construction. The collar support 55 is shown in Fig. 8 assembled with a shirt having a folded over collar portion 50 and an inner collar band 5|. The collar support 55 comprises a sheet 56 of cardboard or the like material having a central portion 51 and upwardly and outwardly inclined wings 58. The wings 58 have upper edges 59 and lower edges 6|]. Said wings form a wide V. The wings 58 have end edges 6| parallel to one another. At the bottom of the central portion 51 is an upwardly curved notched edge 63. At the top of the central portion 51 is an upwardly curved edge 64 similar to the curved notch 63 so that when the sheets 56 are cut, the notch 63 of one sheet forms the edge 64 of the next adjacent sheet. The sheet 56 is formed with inwardly extending slits 65 forming continuations of the upper edges 59. Extending inwardly and downwardly from the slits 65 are curved slits 66 terminating well above the notched edge 63. Thus between the curved edges 66 is formed a neck portion 68 and extending from the neck is a tab or head 69 having outwardly extending wings Ill. The wings H1 are bound by the edges 64 and 65.
On the vertical midsection of the central portion 51 is a piece of flexible metal wire 1|. Pasted on to the central portion 51 and head 69 is a sheet of paper '62 shown in Fig. 12. The sheet of paper 12 has a head portion i3 similar to the head 69 and a neck 14 similar in shape to the neck 68. The sheet of paper :2 has side edges 15 located somewhat beyond the outer tips of the head 73. The paper 12 has slits l6 and H corresponding to the slits 65 and 66 of the sheet 59. The sheet of paper l2 thus is superimposed over the central portion of the sheet 56 and is pasted or glued thereto as at 52a and thereby attaches the flexible wire II to said sheet.
The devices 55 may be made by a continuous process the same as are the devices H]. An elongated piece of cardboard 0 having a width equivalent to the width between the edges 6| is fed from a roll. An elongated piece of wire W is likewise fed from a reel. An elongated strip P of paper is also fed from a roll and glued to the cardboard thereby attaching the wire W in place. The separate collar supports may then be made by die cutting along the outlines of the devices 55.
In use the wings 58 are slipped between the folded over collar portion 50 and the neck band The tab 60, i0 is then folded back so that the wings 7B engage the inner surface of the collar band 5|. The wire H bends with the tab 69, 10.
The collar support 55 has increased strength because the cardboard is laminated with paper and with wire, and the wire is easily attached to the cardboard without the necessity for any prongs or punching or piercing. Furthermore, the device 55 may be manufactured quickly by the continuous method without waste of cardboard, paper or wire.
It will thus be seen that there. is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet'the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth. It is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A collar support comprising a wide V shaped piece of cardboard, a, piece of flexible wire at the middle of the cardboard, and a piece of paper glued to the cardboard with the wire between the paper and the cardboard at the apex of said piece of cardboard and bisectin the same.
2. A collar support of the character described comprising a piece of cardboard having a central portion and wings extending from the central portion, a piece of flexible metal wire extending longitudinally and at the middle of said central portion, and a piece of paper glued to the central portion of the cardboard and serving to attach the wire to the cardboard.
3. A collar support comprising a cardboard member of wide V shape havin a central portion and inclined wings and being formed at its lower side with a pair of downwardly extending spaced tabs with a slot therebetween and at its upper end of the central portion with a pair of spaced notches with a tab extending upwardly therebetween, a wire on the central portion of said member and on said upwardly extending tab, and a piece of paper glued to the central portion of said member and holding said wire to said member, said piece of paper having portions covering said downwardly extendin pair of tabs and the upwardly extending tab and being formed with a slot corresponding to said slot in said member and with notches corresponding to the notches in said member.

A collar support comprising a cardboard member of wide V shape havin a central portion and inclined wings and being formed at its lower side with a pair of downwardly extending spaced tabs with a slot therebetween, and at its upper end of the central portion with a pair of spaced notches with a tab extending upwardly therebetween, a wire on the central portion of said member and on said upwardly extending tab, and a piece of paper glued to the central portion of said member and holding said wire to said member, said piece of paper having portions covering said downwardly extending pair of tabs and the upwardly extending tab and being formed with a slot corresponding to said slot in said member and with notches corresponding to the notches in said member, said slot extending upwardly above said pair of downwardly extending tabs, and said upwardly extending tab extending above said pair of notches.
5. A collar support comprising a cardboard member of wide V shape having a central portion and inclined wings and bein formed at its lower side with a pair of downwardly extending spaced tabs with a'slot therebetween, and at its upper end of the central portion with a pair of spaced notches with a tab extending upwardly therebetween, a wire on the central portion of said member and on said upwardly extending tab, and a piece of paper glued to the central portion of said member and holding said wire to said member, said piece of paper having portions coverin said downwardly extending pair of tabs and the upwardly extendin tab and being formed with a slot corresponding to said slot in said member and with notches corresponding to the notches in said member, said slot extending upwardly above said pair of downwardly extending tabs, and said upwardly extending tab extending above said pair of notches, said pair of downwardly extending tabs being similar in shape to said notches, and said upwardly extendin tab being similar in shape to said slot.
6. A collar support comprising a cardboard member of wide V shape having a central portion and inclined wings and being formed at its lower side with a pair of downwardly extending spaced tabs with a slot therebetween, and at its upper end of the central portion with a pair of spaced notches with a tab extending upwardly therebetween, a wire on the central portion of said member and on said upwardly extending tab and a piece of paper glued to the central portion of said member and holding said wire to said member, said piece of paper having portions covering said downwardly extending pair of tabs and theupwardly extending tab and being formed with a slot corresponding to said slot in said member and with notches corresponding to the notches in said member, said slot extending upwardly above said pair of downwardly extending tabs, and said upwardly extending tab extending above said pair of notches, said pair of downwardly extending tabs being similar in shape to said notches, and said upwardly extending tab being similar in shape to said slot, said wire being of round soft steel stock.
7. A method of making a collar support comprising continuously feeding a relatively wide piece of cardboard, feeding a flexible metal wire centrally over the top surface of the cardboard, feedin a relatively narrow strip of paper centrally over the cardboard and over the wire and gluing said paper to the cardboard to hold the wire to the cardboard, and die cutting the attached together cardboard, wire and paper to form individual collar supports of wide V shape each having a central portion and outwardly inclined wings and a piece of paper glued to the central portion thereof with the piece of wire between the paper and cardboard.
8. A collar support comprising a wide V shaped piece of cardboard, a piece of flexible wire at the middle of the cardboard, and a piece of paper glued to the cardboard with the wire between the paper and the cardboard and at the apex of said piece of cardboard and bisectin the same, the exposed side of the piece of paper being colored diiferently than said cardboard.
9. A collar support comprising a flat member having a central portion and outwardly extend ing wings, a wire on the central portion of said member bisecting said member and extending from its upper to its lower edge, a sheet glued to said member and holding the piece of wire thereon.
10. A collar support comprising a fiat member having a central portion and outwardly extending wings, a wire on the central portion of said member bisecting said member and extending from its upper to its lower edge, a sheet glued to said member and holdin the piece of wire thereon, said flat member being thicker and stiffer than said sheet.
11. A collar support comprising a flat member having a central portion and outwardly extending wings, a wire on the central portion of said member biseeting said member and extending from its upper to its lower edge, a sheet of paper glued to said member and holding the piece of wire thereon, said flat member being thicker and stiffer than said sheet, said sheet covering the central portion only of said flat member, and said wings extending beyond said sheet of paper.
12. A collar support comprising a flat member having a central portion and outwardly extend ing wings, a wire on the central portion of said 8 member extending from its upper to its lower edge, asheet of paper glued to said member and holding the piece of wire thereon, said flat member being thicker and stiffer than said sheet, said sheet covering the central portion only of said flat member, and said wings extending beyond "said sheet of paper, the upper and lower edges of said member being substantially similar, and said member having a tab at its upper edge and a slot at its lower edge corresponding thereto.
13. A collar support comprising a piece of cardboard having a central portion and outwardly extending wings, said cardboard having a central tab extension, a piece of flexible wire at the middle of the cardboard and on said tab extension and bisecting said piece of cardboard, and a piece of paper glued to the central portion of the cardboard and tab extension with the wire between the paper and the cardboard.
14. A collar support comprising a piece of cardboard having a central portion and outwardly extendin wings, said cardboard having a tab extending from the central portion thereof, a piece of wire on the central portion of said cardboard and on said tab bisecting said central portion and tab, and paper glued to the cardboard with the wire between the paper and the cardboard.
