COVERED DISH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,037, dated April 4, 1882.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDMUND A. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covered Dishes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to covered dishes, and particularly to that class described and shown in a pending application for Letters Patent filed by me on the 18th day of January, 1882, and in which the bowl or dish is provided with a cover adapted to be lifted and held automatically through the medium of a coiled spring and worm or quick-screw shaft, reference being here made to said application for a full understanding of the same.

My present invention has for its object simplification and economy in construction; and with these ends in view my invention consists of a dish provided with a bail and a removable cover having combined therewith a. coiled spring and flexible connection,as will be presently explained.

In order that those skilled may fully understand my invention, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section of one of my improved dishes, and Fig. 2 av similar section taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. l.

Similar letters indicate like parts in both figures.

A represents the bowl or dish provided with a suitable base or rest, and having extended upwardly from opposite sides a bail or frame, B, ornamented in any suitable manner to produce a pleasing effect.

In the top of the frame B,and arranged centrally over the dish, is secured a metallic case or box, C, adapted to contain a coil-spring, D. The case C is slotted at a, so as to permit the passage of a flexible suspension band or chain, E, the outer end of which is secured to an eye or ring, b, at the top of the dish-cover F, and the inner end connected to any suitable rotating mechanism operated by the coil-spring D. The connection between the end of the band or chain E and the eye b may be permanently connected, or so connected that they may be separated and the band E permitted to be drawn up within its case C, so that the cover may be removed in the ordinary manner by hand. When made separable, as just described, the extreme outer end of the band or chain E is preferably fashioned with a connecting-hook that will,when not in use as the connection, serve as an ornamental pendant from the central portion of the spring-case C,

andalso prevent the band or chain from being drawn too far within the case.

Any ordinary stop mechanism or latch, F, may be employed to regulate the action of the spring and render it inactive when it is desired to maintain the cover F in a closed position. When it is desired to lift the cover the latch or look F is moved to liberate the spring and its coiling action will operate to take in and coil up the flexible band or chain E within the spring-case C, and consequently to lift and hold aloft the cover.

The cover F may or may not be guided by suitable connections with the sides of the bail B.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The dish or bowl A, provided with the bail B, spring-case C, and spring D, in combination with the cover F, flexible connecting band or chain E, and suitable latch, F, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The dish or bowl A, provided withthe bail B, spring-case C, and spring D, in combination withthe flexible band or chain E, adapted for securement to the cover F,substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
