Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
MICAJAH Oa MALONE, OF PALMYRA, ILLINOIS.
WASHING-MACHINE. f
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 256,019, dated April 4, 1882. Application tiled November 26,1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICAJAH C. MALONE, of Palmyra, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in a washing-machine provided with a vertically-reciprocating dasher or pounder with which two swinging dashers or pounders are combined, so that the clothes will alternately be pressed from above and grasped and pressed from the sides.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure lis a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved washingmachine, showing the dasher-rod lowered. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional elevation of the same on the line x m, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same, showing the dasher-rod raised. Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing the means of securing the pounders in the box.
A bar, A, passes longitudinally through the washing-box B and rests on the recessed brackets O on the inner sides of the ends of the box, on which brackets it is held by the pivoted hooks D, thus permitting this bar to bc withdrawn or removed when the hooks are swung back. The lower forked end E of a dasherrod, F, is passed over'this bar A, and the lower ends of this fork E of the rod are united by a transverse block, G. Laterally-projecting pins or studs, H, of the bar A project through the vertical guide-slots J ofthe fork E of the rod F, and prevent the rod from being moved on the bar A in the direction ofthe length of this` bar. Two arms, K, are pivoted between the shanks ofthe fork E above the bar A, and to the free ends of these arms the swinging levers L are pivoted, these levers L being pivoted to the bar A, as is shown, and each having a beveled paddle-block or pounder, M, attached to its lower end.
The washing-box B is provided with a false bottom, N, resting on spiral or other springs O.
A connecting-rod, P, is pivoted to the dasher-rod F and to a disk or wheel, Q, at the end of a shaft, R, provided with a crank, S. The
upper end of the rod F is guided by an arm, T. The rod F and wheel Q are provided with a series of apertures, V, for adjusting the position ofthe connecting-rod P as may be required.
The operation is as follows: Ifthe crankS is turned, the disk or wheel Q will be rotated and the dasher-rod F will be reciprocated vertically. When the rod F is being raised the upper ends of the levers L are separated and their lower ends are brought together, and when the rod F descends the upper ends of the levers L are brought together and the lower ends are separated, and thus the pounding-blocks M at the ends of the levers L will be moved in and outward. The clothes in the box B are thus alternately pounded by the block G, and then grasped and pressed together by the pounders M. rIhe water is thoroughly agitated and caused to pass through the clothes very thoroughly. The clothes will not be torn, as they are simply pressed alternately in different directions. The spring-bottom N yields more or less every time the block G descends, and thus prevents the clothes from being damaged or torn by the impetus of this block.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a washing machine, the combination, with the bar A, carrying thereciprocating and swingingpounders, ofthe box B, provided with the recessed brackets O and the pivoted hooks D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a washingmachine, the combination, with the box B, the bar A, provided with the pins H and the operating mechanism, of the forked dasher-rod F, provided with the block G and the slots J, the arms K, pivoted to the dasherrod, and thelevers l, provided with the blocks M, and pivoted to the said bar and to the arms K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
MICAJAH O. MALONE.
