Description

(No Model.)
A. GADWELL.
BUCKLE.
N0. 255 838. Patented Apr.'4,,1882.'
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER GADWELL, OF PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,838, dated April 4, 1882.
Application filed November 29, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER GADWELL, of Petaluma, county of Sonoma, State of California, have invented an Improved Buckle; and I herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a new and useful buckle of the kind having tongues, and commonly known as tongue-buckles and it consistsin curvinginwardlythepointofthetongue and providing a hole or socket in the end of the buckle-frame, into which the inturned or curved head of the tongueisadapted to fit after passing through the hole in the strap.
The object of this construction is to afford greatersecurityinbuckling. Thetonguebeing thus held in the hole of the buckle will prevent the strap from slipping off of it.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l-shows my buckle. Fig.2 shows itin connection with a strap. Fig. 3 is a section.
Let A represent the buckle entire. It consists of the quadrilateral frame a and the tongue I), the latter being hinged or looped uponone bar of the frame in the usual. manner. The tongue b has its point curved or turned inwardly at about right angles, as shown at b. In the cross-bar of the frame, opposite to the end upon which the tongue is hinged, is made a hole, 0, and into this the point I) of the tongue fits when said tongue is (No model.)
closed. It may be made to fitas tightlyasdesirable, though it should be accurate, so that it can readily be inserted. In Fig. 2 I show its advantage in connection with a strap.
B represents the strap to which the buckle is secured, and G the strap passing through the buckle. After the tongue has passed through the hole in strap 0 it [its its curved point into the hole a, and is thereby held fast, so that the strap 0 cannot slip from it. The strain of the strapsbeing in a straight line with the buckle, the tongue will not be raised out of the hole 0, but it will bind against oneedge of the said hole and hold firm. By projecting the point of the tongue in this manner it is less liable to come in contact with other things and suffer or do damage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A buckle, A, having a frame, a,with ahole, c, in itsend, and a tongue, b, with an inwardly curved or turned point, b, adapted to fit within the hole 0 when said tongue is closed, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set myhand.
ALEXANDER GADWELL.
