The invention here disclosed relates to mechanical bindings and particularly to a sectional form of binder. v 1 This invention is a division of patent application, Serial No. 602,985, filed July 3, 1945, issued as Patent 2,502,493 on April 4, 1950.
Special objects of the invention are to provide a binder made up of sections which can be easily inserted or removed and which will lie close vtogether in the binder so as not to add bulk to the book or other form of holder in which the binder is mounted.
Other special objects of the invention are to provide a sectional form of binder of simple rugged construction, adapted to withstand hard or careless useage as such a binder might be subjected to and which in addition to its purely sectional character will be of such a construction as to permit removal or replacement of leaves in different binder sections.
Other desirable objects attained by the invention are set forth or will appear in the course of the following specification.
The drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrates a present preferred embodiment of the invention. Structure, however, may be modified and changed as regards this particular disclosure, all within the true intent and broad scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
Figure 1 in the drawing is a broken plan view of one of the sectional binders incorporated in a book construction.
Figure 2 is a broken side or edge view of the binding.
Figure 3 is a broken and part sectional end elevation of the same.
The mechanical binding units which serve as the sections of the binder are shown as like those of the parent case, Serial No. 602,985, Patent 2,502,493 having tubular rib portions 5 carrying ring forming loops or straps 6 projecting from one side and secured in the ring forming relation by having their ends extended through slots at I, Figure 3, in the opposite side of the rib.
As shown in Figurel, the rings 6 of difierent bindings, while of the same spacing, may be longitudinally offset to stagger the rings of adjoining sections, thus to enable the sections being placed close together, without the rings abutting. In this manner the leaves of the different sections can come together to form a closely bound book structure, without the bindings adding to the overall thickness of the book.

The back plate is shown as having upturned flanges H, l2 at opposite ends, the firstcarry ing fixed studs or pins 13 to enter the tubular ribs at-one endand the other fianges'carrying slidable plungers M to ent'erithe opposite ends of-the ribs. v
In the specific example shown, the movable pins or plungers l4 slide through flanges l2 and a second spaced parallel flange l5 carried by fiange I2 and can be shifted back and forth by finger levers Hi.
In this example, the finger levers are split or forked at I! so that they can be forced in over notches or grooves 18 in the sides of the pins and the pins are split and slightly spread at I9 so that they will yieldingly, frictionally grip and hold in the guide openings 20 provided for them in the supporting flanges l2.
The top portions of the supporting flanges I2 are shown as slotted at 2| for passage of the finger levers and the latter are indicated as fulcruming at their inner ends between spaced lugs 22, Figure 2, struck up from the back plate 8.
The means disclosed makes it possible to bind a book in any number of sections and to mount these bound sections in readily releasable fashion between suitable book covers or the like.
With the individual bindings made with ofiset or staggered rings, as shown in Figure 1, the adjoining sections may be mounted as closely together as the leaves will permit so that the sectional binding actually does not increase the overall thickness of the book.
The features disclosed make it practical to bind heavy books of many pages in relatively small size sections of a convenient size for handling and reading, one section at a time. These sections actually may be of a size to carry in the pocket, which can be read fiat since the leaves are completely reversible on the rings. A special advantage of these sectionalized books is that two or more persons may be reading different sections of the same book at the same time. Also, because of the loose' leaf character of the bindings, leaves from one section may be removed and be placed in another section or be otherwise interchanged-to suit convenience or requirements.
The construction is relatively simple and sturdy, designed to stand rough treatment such as might result from continued handling of the different sections in a book.
What is claimed is:
1. A sectional binder comprising mechanically bound book sections having tubular ribs open at opposite ends and oppositely disposed holding pins to enter the opposite ends of said tubular ribs and relatively movable toward and away from each other for efiecting engagement with and release from said tubular ribs, certain of said pins being slidably mounted and having notches in the sides of the same and finger levers forked for engagement in said notches, a back plate, parallel flanges mounted on said back plate and slidably supporting the movable pins, said flanges having space therebetween for operation of said finger levers and said back platehaving fulcrum elements positioned between the flanges for the mounting of said finger levers.
2. A sectional binder comprisin a book back having upstanding parallel flanges at the top and bottom of the same, oppositely disposed, aligned pins on said flanges, the pins on the lowerflange being fixedly mounted and the pins on the upper flange being supported for movement toward and away from the fixed pins and provided with means for individually actuating said movable pins toward and away from the fixed pins and mechanically bound book sections engageable between said flanges and comprisin each a longitudinally extending tubular rib with binder rings projectin therefrom for holding a bound group the upper ends then aligned with the movable,
upper pins for removably securing said bound book sections in side-by-side relation in the binder.
