FASTENING DEVICE FOR SECURING MIRRORS IN LUGGAGE Filed July 13, 1949 3nventor Hustan E. Turpin 5 (Ittorneg:
Patented June 5, 1951 FASTENING DEVICE FOR SECURING MIRRORS IN LUGGAGE Huston E. Turpin, Johnson, Kans.
Application July 13, 1949, Serial No. 104,454
6 Claims.
This invention relates to a fastening device, and more particularly toa device for securing a mirror in the top of luggage such as vanity cases, night cases, train cases, and the like.
The principal objects of the present invention are to provide a fastening device having a base provided with a notch adapted to receive the corner of a mirror and particularly a mirror of substantially diamond-shape, said fastening device having a keeper rotatably mounted on the base of the fastener and engaging over the corner of the mirror after it enters the notch in the base; to provide means -for securing the fastener to the inside top of the luggage; to provide means for preventing rotation of the base portion of the fastener with respect to the lid of the luggage; to provide friction means for preventing movement of the rotatable member when in mirror-locking position; and to provide .a device of this character simple, economical to manufacture, and efficient in operation.
In accomplishing these and other objects of. the invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a piece of luggage showing my improved fastening device secured to the lid thereof and engaging the mirror.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the fastening tievice shown in looking position.
Figure 3 is a top plan view showing the device in unlocked position.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 55, Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 6-6, Fig. 2.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the device.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
I designates a piece of luggage having a lid 2, and 3 is a mirror here illustrated to be of substantially diamond-shape, although I do not wish to be limited to this particular form of the invention. It is the usual practice to place the mirror on the inside top of the lid of the luggage as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The fastening device 4 is preferably made of plastic or other suitable material and comprises a base 5 here illustrated to be of substantially heart-shape provided with a substantially V- shaped notch 6. The bottom of the base portion 5 is provided with a plurality of lugs l which are pressed into the top of the lid to prevent the base from moving with respect thereto. The base is provided with an opening 8 substantially centrally thereof and has an upstanding boss 9. A keeper or looking member I!) also of substantially heart-shape is provided having a central opening H of somewhat larger diameter than the boss 9 and adapted to engage thereover. A sleeve I2 is adapted to engage in the opening II in the keeper and be pressed over the boss 9. The sleeve has a central opening l3 and is provided with a head 14, the sleeve providing a pin upon which the keeper rotates. The sleeve fits tightly over the boss 9 so as to retain the keeper thereon.
The top side of the base 5 is provided with a plurality of upstanding lugs l5, and the underside of the keeper member in is provided with a plurality of recesses 16 mating with the lugs I5 to provide frictional engagement between the keeper and the base to prevent the rotation of the keeper when the device is in latching posi tion. The top of the keeper IQ is also provided with a lip I! adapted to be engaged to rotate the keeper on the base.
The fastening devices are secured to the inside of the top of the lid 2 as shown in Fig. l by rivets or the like IS, the rivets extending through the sleeve l2, boss 9 of the base, and through the top of the lid to secure the fastening devices securely thereto, the lugs I being pressed. into the underside of the lid. Two of the fastening de-, vices are utilized and are spaced the required distance apart so that the respective outer corners of the mirrors engage in the notches 6 of the base portion, and when thus engaged, the keeper is in position as shown in Fig. 3 To secure the mirror in place, the keeper is rotated so that the rear portion l9 thereof engages over the corners of the mirror and assumes the position as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved fastening device for securing mirrors to the inside of a lid of luggage or the like which is quickly and easily assembled and provides removal and replacement of the mirrors when desired as for instance in the case of breakage or the like.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A fastening device for securing a mirror to the lid of luggage comprising, a base having a notch in one end for receiving the corner of said mirror, a keeper rotatably mounted on the base and having an enlarged end extending over said notch and engaging said mirror when in mirror securing position, and means for securing the base and keeper to the lid of the luggage.
2. A fastening device for securing a mirror to the lid of luggage comprising, a base having a notch in one end for receiving the corner of said mirror, said base having an opening in substantially the center thereof and an upstanding boss surrounding said opening, a keeper rotatably mounted on the base and having an enlarged end extending over said notch and engaging said mirror when in'mirror securing position, and'means for securing the base and keeper to the lid of the luggage.
3. A fastening device for securing a mirror to the lid of luggage comprising, a base having a notch in one end for receiving the corner of said mirror, said base having an opening in substantially the center thereof and an upstanding boss surrounding said opening, a keeper rotatable on said base for locking said mirror to said lid having an opening therein of larger diameter than said boss engaging said base over the boss, said keeper having an enlarged end extending over base, keeper and sleeve to the lid of the luggage.
4 A fastening device for securing a mirror to the lid of luggage comprising, a base having a notch in one end for receiving the corner of said mirror, said base having an opening in substantially the center thereof and an upstanding boss surrounding said opening, a keeper rotatable on said base for locking said mirror to said lid and having an opening therein of larger diameter than said boss engaging said base over the boss, said keeper having an enlarged end extending over the notch in said base and engaging the corner of said mirror when in looking position, a sleeve having a head for engaging said boss for rotatably retaining said keeper on said base, said sleeve being pressed onto said boss, means on said base and said keeper for frictionally retaining the keeper in latched position, and means for securing the base, keeper and sleeve to the lid of the luggage.
5. A fastening device for securing a mirror to the lid of luggage comprising, a base having a notch in one end for receiving the corner of said mirror, said base having an opening in substantially the center thereof and an upstanding boss surrounding said opening, a keeper for locking said mirror to said lid and having an opening therein of larger diameter than said boss engaging said base over the boss, said keeper having an enlarged end extending over said notch and engaging the corner of said mirror, a sleeve having a head for engaging said boss for rotatably retaining said keeper on said base, said sleeve ,being pressed onto said boss, means on said base and said keeper for frictionally retaining the keeper in locked position, and means on the base for engaging the lid of the luggage for preventing rotation of the base, and means for securing the base, keeper and sleeve to the lid of the luggage.
'6. A fastening device for securing a mirror to the lid of luggage comprising a base having a notch in one'end for receiving the corner of said mirror, said base having an opening in substantially the center thereof and an upstanding boss surrounding said opening, a keeper for locking the mirror-to said lid and having an opening therein of larger diameter than said bossengag ing said base over the boss, said keeper having an enlarged end extending over the notch in said base and engaging said mirror when in looking position, a sleeve engaging said boss-through said opening inthe keeper, said sleeve having a head for retaining said keeper on said base, means for securing the base, keeper and sleeve to said luggage, lugs on the bottom of said base opposite said boss for engaging the lid of the luggage to prevent rotation of said base, lugs on the side of said base opposite the first named lugs, and recesses in the under side of said keeper mating with said last named lugs for frictionally retaining the keeper in locked position.
