'IMPRQVEM ENT IN PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 25,546. dated Septcniber 20, 1859.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.- V
Beit known that I, yHoRA'rIo F. HicKs, of Grand View, Spencer-county, 1ndiana,`have invented certain new. and useful Improvements 'in Presses for Hay, Cotton, tc.;l and Ido herebydeclare the following to be a full, c1ea-r,andV
exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
The object of the said inventionis to reduce `friction in cotton-presses, haypresses, tc., by means lof's'tepp'e'cl bearings andfrition-rollers adapted to voperate in connection therewith without tendency to displacement.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of a press embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan of the antifriction'rame.- Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the saine.
A is a common form of frameusedfto' con" tain thehay, jcotton, Snc., to-be pressed. It' has firmly fitted in its ends the headsB B. It
may be supported as shown or suspended' from joists, as most convenient. It is provided at the upper end with two doors,0,throngh which the press is.' charged and the material taken out when pressed. It hasalsoan opening, D, at its lower end,.through.which the movable parts may be examined or removed and repaired. l
E is thehoisting-platform or press-plate, to which the screw F is firmly secured, as shown.
G is the revolving nut, fitted to work in the screw F. At the lower end of the nut the' arm H (to which the power necessary to work the press'is applied) is securely connected.
I is a stationary collar or plate secured tov -the head B.
`K is the anti-.friction ,frame or collar, which is devised to work between the collar or .revolving'nut G andstationaryplate I.
K are rollers. journaled, as' `shown,'in the frame K. Therelative diameters' of the ends of the-rollers' are proportioned to the circumference .of the circle ovcrfwhich they vare made `to traverse, so that neither end-maycansethe othertodrag and produce friction.v The work-` 111gfaces olfiiut G and collarI aresteppcd, as shown, so as to present horizontal bearings to bothdiameters of rollers K', vby which' means, whethersuch bearings -be stia-ight4 or slightly curved, no endwise .pressure isiinparted-to the rollers.
I axn aware4 that conicallrollerslhave been interposed between the bearing surfaces of,
presses for the purpose of reducing friction;l but' Iclaim as'new andof myinvention- The described combination of stepped bearings G and I with rollers K', adapted-to fop-l vcrate in connection therewith without endwise vpressure or tendency to displacement,'; in the manner andfor the purpose set-forth.
In testimony kof which invention Ifhereunto set my hand.
` .Hon-.trio refiners ,'HI'cKsgi *Witnessesz FEANcIsMILLwARD. HAMILTON COLLIER.
