Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. COOK, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEORGE F. PAGE.
TRY-COCK FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,544, dated September 20, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. Coox, of the city and county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Try-Cocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, represents a perspective view of the try-cock complete, and ready for use. Fig. 2, represents a vertical, longitudinal section through the try cock, with the valve lever raised up on its hinge, to show a straight unencumbered opening through the barrel of the cock. Fig. 3, is a ball, which may be substituted for the springs, and yoke, and serve as a weight to keep the valve to its seat. Fig. 4E, is a section through the yoke, and represented as detached from the trycock, so that the lever may be swung up as represented in the section Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference where they occur in the several figures, denote like parts of the apparatus in all of them.
I am aware that try-cocks have been furnished with a spring to close and hold them closed, and that safety valves have been furnished with springs and weighted levers. I do not claim these things.
My invention relates to the manner in which I construct a try-cock, so that it may be both a try-cock and an alarm or safety apparatus, in connection with, or independ ent of, the ordinary safety valve-and so that the bore of the barrel of the try-cock, may be readily exposed, to be cleansed, should it from any cause become clogged or choked.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A, represents the barrel of the cock, on the exterior end of which, are lugs or projections c, c, to which are hinged or pivoted, ay two armed lever B, so that the short arm b, of said lever may shut or swing againstthe opening or bore c of the cock, and when in this position the long arm thereof (d), may
extend out in a line or plane parallel to the line of the barrel of the cock, or nearly so.
To the sides of the cock, are attached two springs e, e, slightly bent downward, and extending outward to near the extreme end of the long arm Z of the lever B.
C, is a yoke which slips over the arm cl, and the points of the springs e, e, restupon projections f, f, thereon, so as to hold the lever and springs together.
g, are adjusting screws for straining up the springs, and for holding the yoke to the lever and springs in any desired position. The long arm d, may be marked with a. scale of figures so that the yoke may be set to any point on said scale, and when the pressure on the short arm is equal to that on the scale at which the yoke is set, the try-cock will indicate it, as it will then open and allow steam or water to escape.
On the face of the sho-rt larm I), of the lever, is placed a piece of prepared or vulcanized rubber, c', which sets immediately over the opening of the cock. And, as sometimes happens, if the cock becomes choked or foul, it is only necessary to slip off the yoke, and the lever can be raised up into the position shown in Fig. 2 leaving the bore of the cock barrel entirely unencunibered, so that a rod may run clear through it.
D, is a ball, weight, or counterpoise, which may be used instead of the springs, or, the springs themselves may be differently arranged so as to affect the same purpose, viz: to hold the short arm of the lever againstthe pressure from the inside of the boilerthe ball when used eifecting this same object.
This try-cock may be advantageously used in connection with the ordinary safety valve, and set so as to open or give an alarm before the safety valve would rise. And while this cock is self-acting when set, it may atA any time be used by hand to try the height of water, or steam in the boiler. It is moreover cheap, simple, and effective, besides its great facility for being cleansed or repaired-as a new packing or valve may be put on at any time without. disturbing the cock.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claiin therein as new and desire to secure by Letthe bore of the barrel of the cock substanters Patent is tially as herein described and represented.
Conibinin With the barrel of a tr -cock, a- T two armed lver-one provided Withysprings JOHB F COOK 5 or Weight, and the other with a rubber or Witnesses:
other equivalent disk, so that the Weighted WM. C. HAYWOOD, f arm shall hold the valved or disk arm against D. D. GILL.
