This invention relates to improvements in label aixing machines and, more especially, to improvemen-ts in label aiiixing machines for applying labels circumferentially about the body of easily deformable articles such as balls of yarn, twine, and the like. y
In my Patent No. 2,504,993, issued April 25, 1950, there is disclosed and claimed a machine for applying labels to deformable articles, which machine includes specially designed holder elements preventing deformation of the article during the label aflixing operation. The holder elements are mounted on an intermittently actuatedy chain or wheel ccnveyor and the articles to be labeled are successively conveyed to a label afxing station where a label may be extended about both the article and the holder element upon which it is supported, the labeled article being subsequently ejected from its holder element by a throwout or ejection mechanism. The present application is concerned with certain improvements over my above identied patent.
One of the objects of theinvention is the provision of a machine of the character indicated embodying cushioning means which cooperates with the intermittently rotated conveyor wheel to positively align each holder element at the label aixing station of the machine.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a machine of the character indicated having improved. positively acting ejector mechanism for removing the labeled articles from the holder elements.
An additionall object of the invention is the provision of cam or guide means fixed to the conveyor wheel and associated with each holder element in such a manner as to automatically provide for closing of the pivoted upper holder A arm at the label aflixing station of the machine.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved holder element having means for positively retaining the applied label in properly adjusted position immediately after the label afxing operation and during the entire interval of operation of the machine between labeling of the article and ejection of the labeled article from its holder element.
The foregoing objects as well as additional objects and advantages of the invention will readily appear in the course of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate preferred embodiments of the invention, and wherein;

The device of the present invention includes an intermittently actuated conveyor system including a plurality of individual holder elements uponV which. the deformable articles to be labeled may be supported. Each article supported on arespective holder element is conveyed in a stepwise manner to a label afxing station where a label is extended about both the article and the holder arms during the rest period of the conveyor. In one embodiment of the invention each holder element is yprovided. With an auxiliary pivoted retaining member which is normally urged against the upper tiltable holder arm. Trip means are provided in order to assure automatic elevation ofthe auxiliary retaining member when a given holder element is disposed at the label aflixing station of the machine so that the label may be properly and. unobstructedly applied about the article and the main upper and lower holder arms. After the label has been applied and the labeled article on its holder element moves away from the aixing station, the auxiliary holding member operates to retain the ailixed label in adjusted position during the interval of rotation of the conveyor Wheel between the label affixing station and the ejector station of' the machine. The mechanism. for extending,l
overlapping and securing the label is described in my Patent No. 2,179,264, issued November 7, 1939, and will not be detailed here since it does not form the subject matter of the `present in'- vention.
A major Vfeature of the present invention resides in the provision of cushioning stop means reciprocated synchronously with the rotation of the conveyor wheel in such a manner as to positively align each holder element at the label afxing station. This stop means conveniently takes the form of a reciprocating member or bar resiliently mounted to cushion the impact of the conveyor wheel incident to the cessation of ro-' tation of the conveyor wheel upon successive contact of said stop member with stop lugs suitably disposed on said conveyor wheel adjacent each holder element.
The ejector mechanism of the device has been improved over thatV disclosed in my co-pending application to assure positive and foolproof removal of thelabeled articles from their respective holder elements. The foregoing features as well as additional features of the invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Referring rst to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1-7 of the drawings, the device includes a conveyor element or wheel I rotatably mounted in a bearing Il secured to a frame I2. A plurality of holder elements I3 arerotatably mounted on the rim of wheel I9 and saidrholder elements are constantly maintained in vertical or upright position as the Wheel rotates by means of a counterweight i4 secured to the rear end of the mounting arm I5 of 4each holder element I3. As shown in Fig. 7, each counterweight I4 may be adjustably tensioned against Vthe rear` surface of conveyor wheel I9 by means of a plunger I5 resiliently urged into frictional engagement against said conveyor wheel by means of a spring Il, the pressure of which may be regulated by an adjusting screw I3.
In addition to the mounting arm I5 which is rotatably mounted with respect to the conveyor Wheel I0, each holder element I3 comprises a mainplate I9 Xed to said'mounting arm, a Vlower adjustable arm 2Q slidably mounted on said main plate and aV tiltable upper arm 2l pivotally mounted on said vmain plate. Mounting arm I5 is further provided with a slidable spacer or piston 22 for varying the effective depth of each holder element in order to accommodate articles of varying size;

Said upper arm also Vcarries at its rear end a roller 23 adapted to be engaged by a leaf spring or the likeV associated With the stop means of the device in order` to further assure VVhorizontal disposition of the upper arm in closed vrposition at the label aixing station, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and as will be more fully described hereinbelow.
Holder elements I3 loaded with yarn balls or other deformable articles are successively conveyedrto the label afxing station, designated L in Fig. l, by imparting intermittent movement to conveyor wheel II! so that a loaded holder element will be disposed at label aflixing station L during the rest period of the conveyor. A label is extended .circumferentially about the article and the holder arms 23 and 2I, the ends of the label are first overlapped and then secured together at the label aixing station L. The appli cation of the label may be accomplished substantially in the manner disclosed in my Patent No. 2,179,264. Intermittent movement may be imparted to the conveyor wheel I in any desired manner, as by means of a reciprocating hook successively engageable with each of a plurality of notches 2li uniformly spaced about the pe riphery of Wheel I0 in accordance with the arrangement described in my previously identified vco-pending application.
An important feature of the invention resides in the provision of resilient cushioning stop means reciprocated synchronously with the rotation of conveyor wheel I5 in such a manner as to positively align each holder element I3 at the label ailixing station L. This stop means conveniently takes the form of a reciprocating member or bar 25 arranged to periodically abut stop lugs 2B suitably disposed on conveyor I Il, adjacent each holder element I3, said stop member being resiliently mounted to cushion the impact of the conveyor wheel. As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, stop member 25 is pivotally mounted at 25d on a reciprocable base element or carrier 21 retained in a slide bearing 28 secured to the frame of the machine. VReciprocatory motion is imparted to carrier 2l by means of a lever 29 pivoted to the frame I2 at 3i), said lever having an upper slotted end 29a pivoted to one end of carrier 2l. Lever 29 carries a follower 3l engaged Within the camway 32 of a continuously rotating camwheel 33 mounted on shaft 34. Shaft 34 is preferably the driveshaft of the machine and may also carry a crank-wheel (not shown) by means of which intermittent rotation is imparted to conveyor wheel Iii in accordance with the arrangement'described in my co-pending application. In the preferred embodiment of the invention stop member 25 is pivoted intermediate its ends at 35 to the upper end of a piston 35 retained in an air cylinder 3l mounted on carrier 2l adjacent conveyor wheel Ill. As best shown in Fig. 4, air cylinder 31 is provided with an intake port 38 controlled by an intake ball-valve 39 and spring 49. An outlet passageway All connects the air chamber of` cylinder 3'! with an outlet port l2 and the rate of air discharge from the cylinder may be regulated by means of an adjustment screw 43 which bears against a suitable tension spring 44 biasing the outlet ball-valve 45 against the discharge end of outlet passageway 4I. A
suitable washer dis secured to the inner end ofV piston 36 in order to assure an airtight seal within air cylinder 3l. By reason of the described arrangement an adjustable cushioning effect may be'attained for resiliently mounted stcp member 25 depending upon the size and mass of conveyor wheel I 3 and the size and mass of the articles being labeled. Y
During the retraction of carrier 2'! stop member 25 is rotated in a clockwise direction about its pivot 35 to the elevated position illustrated in broken outline in Fig. 1 preparatory to the stepwise advancement and the cushioned cessation of rotation of conveyor wheel lil which results in the alignment of another loaded holder element I3 at the labeling station L. This resetting motion of stop member 25 is achieved by means of an angularly inclined deector plate 59 secured to the frame of the machine and arranged to abut a roller 5I Ycarried atY the outer end of said stop member.' In order to allow the unobstructed application of a label ||0 about the deformable article supported on its holder element 81 at the labeling station during the rest period of conveyor wheel 85, trip means are provided for raising hold-down -bar 91 out of contact with upper holder arm 9|,
as shown in broken outline in Fig. 1l. For this purpose, a trip member I I I is pivotally suspended at I I2 from one end of a rocker arm I I3 pivotally secured at 4 to a frame bracket I I5, said rocker arm being actuated in any desired manner as by means of a cam lever IIB slidable in a bearing support II1 and ycontrolled by a cam I I8. A biasing lever ||9 is pivoted to the lower end of trip member III at and extends upwardly therefrom to be supported by free frictional engagement against laterally offset pin |08 of piston |05. Adjacent pivot |20 biasing lever carries a leaf spring |2| for resiliently urging trip member I|| into its operative position in order to elevate hold-down bar 91 to the broken line position of Fig. 11. The required elevation of holddown bar 91 is conveniently effected by the provision on trip member I I I of an abutment shoulder I I I a which acts against a rearward extension 81a of said hold-down bar when said trip member is actuated in a downward direction by rocker arm ||3 and cam ||8.
In order to prevent back motion of the conveyor wheel 85 and to assure positive alignment of each holder element 81 at the labeling station of the machine, a detent hook or pawl |22 is mounted on a rocker arm |23 substantially parallel to the rear end of rocker arm IIE.
Rocker arm |23 is pivotally mounted at |24 on a frame bracket |25 which is preferably located a shorter distance from conveyor wheel 85 than frame bracket |I5. Rocker arms H3 and |23 are interconnected at their outer ends by a somewhat flexible bridge member |26, thereby permitting .sufcient torsional movement to compensate for the differential disposition of the pivots II4 and |24 of rocker arms ||3 and |23 respectively. Detenthook |22 is spring urged into successive engagement with each of the stop notches |21 uniformly spaced about the periphery of conveyor wheel 85. At the ejector station of the machine it is again necessary to elevate hold-down bar 91 to permit removal of a labeled article from its holder element. For this purpose a fixed ejector trip member |28 is mounted on a fixed support |29 forwardly of conveyor'wheel 85 (see Fig. 8) and suitably disposed in order to abut the rearward extension 91a of hold-down bar 91. The ejector mechanism may be substantially the same in structure and operation as that described for the initial embodiment of the invention.
Since certain modifications may be made in the label aixing machine of the present inven' tion without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the foregoing' description and shown in the accompanying drawing be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
l. In a label aiiiXing machine of the type having means for applying labels circumferentially about the body of an article, an intermittently operated conveyor having a plurality of holder elements rotatably mounted thereon for retaining articles to be labeled, reciprocating stopY means synchronized with the rotation of said conveyor for periodically and resiliently arresting the motion of said conveyor in order to consecutively dispose each of said holder elements in labeling position and ejection means operable to remove a labeled article from its supported position on a holder element at a point in the movement of said conveyor remote from said label-applying means, said ejection means having a substantially rectilinear path and having a pair of pivoted ejector arms alternately movable toward and away from each other upon reversal of the vertical direction of travel of said ejection means.
2. In a label afxing machine of the type having means for applying labels circumferentially about the body of an article, an intermittently operated conveyor having a plurality of holder elements rotatably mounted thereon for retaining articles to be labeled, said conveyor having a plurality of spaced stop lugs disposed thereupon adjacent each of said holder elements, a reciprocating stop member synchronized with the rotation of said conveyor for successively and resiliently abutting each of said stop lugs in order to consecutively dispose each of said holder elements in labeling position and ejection means Y operable to remove a labeled article from its Vsupported position on a holder element at a point in the movements of said conveyor remote from said label-applying means, said ejection means having a substantially rectilinear path and having a pair of pivoted ejector arms alternately movable toward and away from each other upon reversal of the vertical direction of travel ofV said ejection means.
3. In a label aiiiXing machine of the type hav-'- ing means for applying labels circumferentially about the body oi an article, an intermittently operated conveyor' havingv a plurality. of holder elements-rotatably mounted thereon for retaining articlesto belabeled, each holder element comprising a pair oi opposed upper and lower arms contacting portions of theY peripheral suriface of the article, the upper arm' of each holder element being tiltable upwardly to open position, said conveyor being provided with xed cam means adjacent eachA ofA said holder elements adapted for elevating saidtiltable upper arm'to closed operative position inA the labeling. position of the-holder element, anv auxiliary pivoted-holddown arm-normally spring-urged" intol contact against said upper arm for retaining the applied label in position, a trip member adapted to elevate said hold-down arm in the labeling position of each holder element during the rest period of the conveyor, reciprocating stop means synchronized with the rotation of said conveyor for periodically and resiliently arresting the motion of said conveyor in order to consecutively dispose each of said holder elements in labeling position, ejection means operable to remove a 1abeled article from its supported position on a holder element at a point in the movement of said conveyor remote from said label-applying means, said ejection means having a substantially rectilinear path and having a pair of pivoted ejector arms alternately movable toward and away from each other upon reversal of the vertical direction of travel of said ejection means, and iixed abutment means adapted to elevate said hold-down arm in the ejection position of each 11 holder element in order to allow removal of the labeled article by said ejection means.

In a label aifxing machine of the type having means for applying labels circumferentially about the body of an article, an intermittently operated conveyor having a plurality of holder elements rotatably mounted thereon for retaining articles to be labeled, each holder elementcomprising a pair of opposed upper and lower arms contacting portions of the peripheral surface of the article, the upper arm of each holder element being tiltable upwardly to open position, said conveyor being provided with fixed cam means adjacent each of said holder elements adapted for elevating said tiltable upper arm to closed operative position in the labeling position of the holder element, an auxiliary pivoted hold-down arm normally spring-urged into contact against said upper arm for retaining the Vapplied label in position, a trip member adapted to elevate said hold-down arm in the labeling position of each holder element during the rest period of the conveyor, said conveyor having a plurality of spaced stop lugs disposed thereupon adjacent each of said holder elements, a reciprocating carrier mounted for motion toward and away from said conveyor, a stop member pivotally mounted on said carrier for successively and resiliently abutting each of said stop lugs in order to consecutively dispose each of said holder elements in labeling position, a resiliently supported piston mounted on said carrier, said stop member being pivotally connected to the free end of said piston, a xed defiector member adapted to abut the outer end of said stop member upon retraction of said carrier for restoration of said stop member and piston toroperative elevated position, ejection means operable to remove a labeled article from its supported position on a holder element at a point in the movements of said conveyor remote from said label-applying means, said ejection means having a substantially rectilinear path and having a pair of pivoted ejector arms alternately movable toward and away from each other upon reversal of the vertical direction of travel of said ejection means, and ixed abutment means adapted to elevate said hold-down arm in the ejection position of each holder element in order to allow removal of the labeled article by said ejection means.

In a label aixing machine of the type having means for applying labels circumferentially about the body of an article, an intermittently operated conveyor having a plurality of holder elements rotatably mounted thereon for retaining articles to be labeled, each holder element comprising a pair of opposed upper and lower'arms contacting portions of the peripheral surface of the article, the upper arm of each holder element being tiltable upwardly to open position, said conveyor being provided with xed cam means adjacent each of said holder elements adapted for elevating said tiltable upper arm to closed operative position in the position of the holder element, an auxiliary pivoted hold-down arm normally spring-urged into/ contact against said upper arm for retaining the applied Vlabel in position, a trip member adapted to elevate said hold-down arm in the labeling position of each holder element during the rest period of the conveyor, said conveyor having a plurality of spaced stop lugs disposed thereupon adjacent each ofl said holder elements, a reciprocating carrier mounted for motion toward and away from said conveyor, a stop member pivotally mounted on said carrier for successively and resiliently abutting each of said stop lugs in order to consecutively dispose each of said holder elements in labeling position, said carrier being provided at its inner end with an air cylinder having a piston protruding externally thereof, said stop member being pivotally connected to the free end of said piston, a nxed delector member adapted to abut the outer end of said stop member upon retraction of said carrier for restoration of said stop member and piston to elevated operative position, ejection means operable to remove a labeled article from its supported position on a holder element at a point in the movement of said conveyor remote from said label-applying means, said ejection means having a substantially rectilinear path and having a pair or" pivoted ejector arms alternately movable toward and away from Yeach other upon reversal of the vertical direction of travel of said ejection means, and xed abutment means adapted to elevate said hold-down arm in the ejection position of each holder element in order to allow removal of the labeled article by said ejection means.
