Abstract

394,480. Applying caps to bottles. STANDARD CAP & SEAL CORPORATION, 1200, Fullerton Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. June 4, 1932,-No. 15860. Convention date, June 3, 1931. [Class 125 (ii).] A machine for applying caps to bottles &c., of the type in which means are provided for successively transferring caps from a magazine to a bottle-capping device, comprises mechanical and pneumatic means which are rendered operative for selectively transferring caps from a magazine to a delivery shoot when a predetermined number of caps has been removed from the delivery shoot by bottles &c. passing adjacent said shoot. As shown, the mechanical and pneumatic means include a plunger 60 having, at its upper end, a conical flexible member 63 of rubber &c. This plunger reciprocates in a sleeve 69 having a slot through which projects a pin 70 which is fixed to the plunger. The pin carries a roller 71 which rides in a cam slot 72 formed in a cam member 73 pinned at 74 to the end of a shaft 75 rotatably mounted in a bearing 76 fixed to the lower end of a plunger 77 sliding in guides 78. This plunger is reciprocated via link 83 and disc-cam 87 from a shaft 88, and as this shaft rotates the flexible member 63 alternately approaches and recedes from the lowermost of a nest of caps held in a hopper 44 by resilient adjustable fingers 52 of different lengths. When the inclined delivery shoot 42 is full of caps and a pad 100 secured to the end of an arm 102 rests on a cap, the end 98 of an arm 103, which is fixed to a shaft 95 as is also the arm 102, is held out of engagement with the end 105 of an arm 104 secured to a squared portion of the shaft 75, and the extent of movement of the plunger 60 is not sufficient to enable the flexible member 63 thereon to make contact with the lowermost cap. When, however, that portion of the shoot 42 under the pad 100 is empty the arm 102 drops and the end 98 engages the end 105 of the reciprocating arm 104, whereby the cam member 73 is swung round on the pin 70 and the plunger 60 is raised relative to the shaft 75. The plunger 60 now touches the lowermost cap at the end of its upward stroke and an orifice 66 leading from a bore 65 in the plunger registers with an orifice 67 leading to the inlet of an air pump. As the plunger recedes the cap is sucked out of the nest and when the orifice 66 registers with an aperture 68 open to the atmosphere the cap is engaged by a ledge 61 and blown by a blast of air from a pipe 38 down into the shoot 42, the pad 100 being raised for its passage by the engagement of a roller 106 on an arm 94 fixed to the shaft 95 with the cam 87. The bottom cap in the shoot 42 is held by spring-urged arcuate fingers 122 and withdrawn by the passage of a bottle, the cap being pressed down on the bottle-mouth by a pivoted plate 128.
