corporation of Michigan Application December 4, 1944, Serial No. 566,552
3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to window regulators but more particularly to regulators for use in connection with vehicle windows, and an object is to produce a simple and efiicient regulator mechanism for imparting a straight up and down movement to a window glass, the lower edge portion of which slopes or inclines downwardly.
Another object is to adapt a cross arm win dow regulator mechanism for use with a window glass, the lower edge portion of which inclines downwardly fromone side to the other and to achieve a substantially rectilinear movement in directions coincident with the up and down plane of the glass.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear, and for purposes of illustration but not of limitation, an embodiment of the invention is shown on the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevational view of an automobile door with parts broken away, illustrating a window regulating mechanism embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional planview through the door taken substantially along the line 2-2 of Figure l; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of an end portion of one of the regulator arms.
Generally, a vehicle door D to which the present invention may be applied, comprises a window opening 5 arranged above a'hollow well section 6 enclosed by inner and outer door panels 1 and 8 respectively. The opening 5 while of generally rectangular shape, may have a sloping pillar post as indicated at 9, and a sloping sill l inclined at an angle to the horizontal, as a matter of design. A window or glass panel II for closing the opening is generally correspondingly shaped. The well section 6 is provided for concealing the window operating mechanism l2, which is supported on the inner door panel 1 and further provides space into which the window panel II is lowered.
Window panels of the present type are generally adapted to slide vertically within the window opening and well in the conventional manner guided between vertically disposed channels I4. The guide channels are arranged slidably to engage the side edges of the window glass II as it is moved up or down by the regulating mechanism. As presently disclosed the window glass II conforms to substantially the shape of the window opening so that when it is lowered, the upper margin of the sloping edge is spaced away from the pillar of the door. The panel is partially supported against tilting or rocking by means of a channel member I6, which is secured to the lower edge of the window panel and on the end adjacent the sloping edge of the panel, is equipped with a guide engaging member H. The channel member I6 is further provided with a pair of spaced retainers [8, one of which has an elongate slot to receive a stud l9 carried by one of the regulator arms. The left hand retainer is pivoted by a stud 19' to an adjacent regulator arm. The retainers are disposed in a plane parallel with the lower edge of the window "panel which plane, as previously mentioned, lies at an angle to a horizontal plane passing through the regulator support.
The regulator mechanism [2 is generally of conventional design and comprises a driving arm 20 mounted at its lower end for swinging movement about a pivot stud 2| carried by a mounting plate 22. The plate 22 is suitably secured in the usual manner by screws to the inner door panel 1. A lower arm 23 fixed to the lower end of the arm 20 and forming a bell crank therewith, is connected by a link 24 to a gear sector 25 incorporated in a standard regulator operating mechanism 26 also secured to the inner door panel I. A pinion 28 meshing with the gear sector 25 is mounted on a stub shaft 29 which projects outwardly from the door to receive a conventional crank handle (not shown) for manipulating the regulator. A balance cross arm 30 of substantially the length of the driving arm 20 is rotatably pivoted on the driving arm medially of its length on a pivot stud 3| and has its lower end slidably connected to the mounting plate 22. A spiral counterbalancing spring 3|a is mounted in the usual manner on the pivot stud for the gear sector 25. The upper end of the arm 30 is pivotally connected by the stud l9 to the left hand retainer I8.
In order for the regulator arms 20 and 30 to transmit straight up and down motion to the window panel II, the outer ends of the arms are required to swing through arcs of equal radii. This is not possible as is apparent in the drawings, if the arm 20 is of suflicient length to be connected directly by means of the stud l9 to the right hand retainer 18. By this arrangement, the window would be caused to rock and thus bind within the guide channels. In order to overcome this difilculty, the stud I9 is offset to one side of the arm 20 on a radius struck from the pivot 2| and equal to the length of the arm 30 between its end connections. In order to support the stud IS in this location, I provide a triangular extension plate 33, which is secured by rivets 34 to the formed with a slanting lower edge as illustrated The result accomplishednb-yuse. of
on Figure 1. the extension plate 33 could be achieved by replacing what might be termed: the standard i arm:
20 with another arm provided with a} bent endi portion so designed that the stud or button l9 would be. properly located with respect to the elongate slot or guide in the right hand retainer I8. However, to follow the latter procedurelwould add substantially to the cost of the regulator particularly wh'en'consideraticnis-given to large-scale production in which manufactureis carried: on in connection withboth the so-called standard cross arm regulator and a; similar regulator for'a windowglass arrangement as above'described. Thus I by employing the simple: and efficient expedient of: the: extension plat-e133, the same: regulator can bereadily adapted for-"the window glass with a slopingslower edge:
It is to be understood that numerous changes in details ofi construction, arrangement and operation may be effected without departing from the spirit of; the invention especially as defined.- in the appended claims.
What-I claim is:
1. Window regulator mechanism comprising a pair of. swinging relatively straight crossed arms pivotally connected together at the locality of their crossing to enable the arms to swing one past the other upon raising and lowering. a. window panel, the outer end portions ofv said arms from their point of pivotal connection being of approximately the same length, an-extension plate secured toandprojecting laterally from the. outer panel}: end of one: arm, pivots on said; extension plate andthe endor saidother arm, respectively, forv connecting the same to the lower edge: ofa window panel, saidpivots being of substantially the same radial distances. from the point-of pivotalconnection of said crossed arms,. a mount.- ing for the opposite ends of.said.arms; and means for imparting operative swinging movement to saidcrossed arms.
2;: Window regulator mechanismfor. actuating a-windowpanel in substantially straight translar.
tory movement.- the lower edge portion ofsaid window panel-being substantiall inclinedbetween 4 its side edges, said mechanism comprising a pair of swinging arms pivotally connected together at the locality of their crossing to enable the arms to swing one past the other upon opening and closing movements of the window panel, the outer end portions of said arms from their point of pivotal connection being approximately straight and ofapproximately equal length, a triangular plate fixedto the cuter'endlof one arm: and having an apical portion projecting laterally therefrom, and pivots on said apical portion and on the endof said other arm, respectively, for connection" totlfe inclined edge portion of the windowpa-nel, said. pivots being of substantially the same: radial distance from the point of pivotal connection ofi s'ai'd swinging arms.
3. Window regulator mechanism for actuating a window panel in substantially straight translatory" movement, the lower edge portion of said window pane] being substantially inclined between i-ts-sideedges; said mechanism comprising a pair of swinging arms pivotallyconnected together at the locality of their crossing to enable the. arms toswing: one past the other uponopening and closing movements-ct the window-panel, the outer end portions of. said. arms from their pointof pivotal connection. being approximately straight and. of approximately equal. length, a separate adapter plate fixed to theouter endofone arm and having a portion projecting; laterally therefrom, and pivotsrespectively connecting saidlaterally projecting portion andztheend of the other arm tothe inclined edge portionot the window panel, said pivots being ofi substantially the same radial distance from the point of: pivotal connecticn of said swinging. arms..
