BAKERS OVEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,264, dated March 21, 1882.
Application filed March 22, 1881.
To all 'whom lt muy concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY FALKE, of tlie city of Buifalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bakers Ovens, of which the followngis aspecitication,reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates more particularly to an apparatus for illuminating'the interior of bakers7 ovens. Heretofore various kinds ot illuminatingapparatushave been placed either in the oven or in chambers or niches t'ormed in the walls of the' ovens; but they are liable to be extinguished or rendered inoperative or impaired by the steam which is generated in baking, and some are very inconvenient in use.
The object ot' my invention is to produce an illuminatingapparatus for bakers ovens which is simplein construction, and reliable andconvenien-t in use; and it consists of the construetion and arrangement of the parts which compose myimproved apparatus, and of the apparatus as a whole, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the aceonij'ia-nying drawings, consisting ot' two sheets, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation ot the illuminating apparatus. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in line .7c x, Fig. 1. Fig 3 is an interior elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 4 is an exterior elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a vertical section in line y y, Fig. l, with the lamp removed. Fig. 6 is a perspective view ofthe lamp chimney.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several gures.
-A represents a baker-s oven of ordinary and wellknown construction. A represents the top arch, A2 the front wall, and A3 the floor, of the oven.
B represents a'rectangular casing or chamber, ot' cast-iron or other suitable material, arranged in the front wall, A2, near the door of the oven, for the reception of the illuminating apparatus. The case B is open at its outer end and closed at its inner end -by a plate, b, which is provided with an opening, b', of suitable size to admit the light to the interior ot the oven.

plate O slides on a horizontal ledge or projection, c, formed on the plate I), and the contiguous edges of the plate O and ledge c are preferably beveled,so as to hold the plate C snugly against the plate b.
d is a lug formed on the plate O near its lower edge and projecting forward through a horizontal slot,`d, in the plate I).
E is a hand-lever, pivoted at e to the bottom plate ofthe casing B, and connected with its inner end to the lug d, so that by operating the lever the sliding plate C can be adjusted to cover or expose the openingv b. The plate b` and ledge c extend laterally on the inner side of the front wall ofthe oven to forln a bearing or support for the sliding plate O when it is adjusted to expose the opening.
F represents a shield or projecting plate, arranged on the inner side of the sliding plate O, to prevent ashes and cinders from falling into the depression in which the plate O works..
The shield F projects above the. door of the H represents the supporting-table, on which' the lamp I is placed. The table H is provided with legs h, wherebysufcient space is formed between the platform of the table and the bottom plate ofthe casing B to permit the free movement of the lever E.
K is a vertical plate, secured to the inner end of the table H, and provided with-an opening, 7c, which coincides with the opening b in the plate b. The opening 7c is covered by a sheet of mica, 7c', which is held in place by a frame, k2, or by any other suitable means. The tiame of the lamp I is arranged at a height to properlyzfilluminate the interior ofthe oven through the openings b and k. The table His readily removed from the casing B when it becomes necessary to clean or renew the mica 7c', or for other purposes.
L is a ue, formed in the front wall, A2, ofthe oven, for carrying oft the products of combustion which rise from the lamp. Theinner end of the ilue L connects with an opening, l, in
the top plate of the case B over the llame of the lamp, and the outer end of the lue opens iu front of the wall A2, as clearly shown.
M represents air-tlues formed in the front wall, A2, on each side ot' the casing B for the purpose ot' preventing the overheating of the same.
m is an air-inlet flue arranged under the bottom plate of the casing B and connecting with the lower ends ofthe tlues M, and m is an airoutlet flue arranged over the top plate of the casingB and connecting with the upper ends ot the tlues M. 'lhe exterior air enters through the inlet m, passes upward through the tlues M, where it becomes heated, and escapes through the outlet m. In thismanner the casing B is constantly surrounded by cool air-currents, which carry oi' the heat which the casing absorbs yfrom the surrounding hot brick walls. The top plate ofthe casing B may be provided with holes m2, to facilitate the escape of the hot air from the easing B. The air-escape ilue m and the flue L may be connected, either or both, with a chimney or other air-conduit, if it should be necessary to increase the draft through these passages.
N represents the oil-reservoirof thelamp I; and a a are two longitudinal ribs secured to the bottom of the oil-reservoir, whereby the latter is supported above the table H, so as to form an air-passage between the bottom ofthe oil-reservoir and the table H, whereby the oilreservoir is kept cool.
O represents the lamp-chim ney, composed of two metallic side plates, p p, and two mica plates, p, which latter are arranged in line with the openings b lr. The mica plates 22' are held under overlapping flanges q, formed with the side plates, p, a similar flange, q', formed on the bottom plate, p2, and a similar flange, q2, formed on a metallic plate, p3, which connects the side plates, p, above each mica plate. The flange q2 is made so large that after the sheet ot' mica is introduced under the side llanges, q, it can be pushed under the upper flange, q2, until it is raised over the lower tlange, q', when, by pushing the sheet ot' mica down behind the lower flange, q, it is secured in place.
B is a reflector, arranged in line with the llame, and arranged to throw the light into the oven through the opening b. When a large quantity of steam is generated in the oven by injecting waterinto the sa1ne,or otherwise, the slide Gis closed to protect the mica k from the effects of the steam, whereby the mica is kept clean. When the oven-door is opened for introducing or removing the articles to be baked the slide C is opened by a simple movement ot' the lever E, thereby throwing the full light of the lamp into the oven and enabling the baker to manipulate the articles in the oven with Convenience.
The sheet of mica, 7c', which covers the opening b', prevents the steam in the oven, when the slide C is drawn, from blowing out the lamp. It' there is a pressure of steam in the oven, it is relieved as soon as the slide C is opened by the steam escaping through the slot d', in which the lugd works. The air-passages around and through the casing prevent the overheating of the casingand the lamp placed in the same, and permit a kerosene-lamp to be used with perfect safety.
Itis obvious that a gas-flame lnay be used for illuminating the oven; but I prefer the use of an oil-lamp, as I nd it to att'ord a steadier and brighter light.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with an oven, A, of the chamber B, provided with an opening, b', a slide, O, and a shield, F, protecting the slide (l, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with an oven, A, ot a chamber, B, provided with an opening, b', and a removable table, H, provided with a vertical plate, K, having an opening, lr, coinciding with the opening b and covered by a sheet of mica, k, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with an oren, A, ot" a chamber, B, provided with an opening, b', and adapted to receive an illuminating apparatus, and airconduits M m at. surrounding the chamber B, whereby the latter is cooled, substantially as set forth.
4. rlhe combination, with an oven, A, of a chamber, B, provided with an opening, b', and a lamp, I, having its oil-reservoir provided on its under side with longitudinal ribs a,where by an air-space is formed between the bottom ofthe oil-reservoir and the bottom plate of the chamber B and the oil-reservoir is kept cool, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with an oven, A, of a chamber, B, provided with an opening, b', and a lamp, I, having a chimney, O, composed of metallic side plates, p p, and mica plates pf, arranged in line with the opening 1)',substantially as set forth.
